Book Bump Elliott the Michigan Wolverines and Their 1964 Championship Football Season

Download or read book Bump Elliott the Michigan Wolverines and Their 1964 Championship Football Season written by E. Bruce Geelhoed and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the leadership of head coach Bump Elliott, the 1964 Wolverines won Michigan's first Big Ten championship since 1950 and their first Rose Bowl since 1951, and finished fourth in the national college football polls. They defeated four top-ten ranked teams: Navy, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Oregon State, their Rose Bowl opponent. The Wolverines also defeated Minnesota for the first time since 1960, and reclaimed the prized Little Brown Jug. Despite its impressive record, the 1964 team failed to attract the national attention it deserved. At the beginning of the season, few football observers expected Michigan to contend for the Big Ten championship. But by the end of the season it was clear that the Wolverines were one of America's elite teams--perhaps the best in the country. This book chronicles for the first time the exploits of Michigan's 1964 team and gives them long-overdue recognition.

Book In the Name of Editorial Freedom

Download or read book In the Name of Editorial Freedom written by Stephanie Steinberg and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when daily print newspapers across the country are failing, the Michigan Daily continues to thrive. Completely operated by students of the University of Michigan, the paper was founded in 1890 and covers national and international news topics ranging from politics to sports to entertainment. The Daily has been a vital part of the college experience for countless UM students, none more so than those who staffed the paper as editors, writers, and photographers over the years. Many of these Daily alumni are now award-winning journalists who work for the premier news outlets in the world. In the Name of Editorial Freedom, titled after the paper’s longstanding masthead, compiles original essays by some of the best-known Daily alumni about their time on staff. For example Dan Okrent, first public editor of the New York Times, discusses traveling with a cohort of Daily reporters to cover the explosive 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Rebecca Blumenstein, deputy editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, and author Alan Paul talk about the intensity of the Daily newsroom and the lasting relationships it forged. Adam Schefter of ESPN recalls his awkward first story that nevertheless set him on the path to become the ultimate NFL insider. The essays of this book offer a glimpse, as activist Tom Hayden writes, at the Daily’s impressive role covering historic events and how those stories molded the lives of the students who reported them. Search and browse the Bentley Historical Library's Michigan Daily Archive, https://digital.bentley.umich.edu/midaily. The free online archive contains stories from 23,000 issues published between 1891 and 2014. "They say a newspaper is a daily miracle. If that’s so, The Michigan Daily is something beyond that, with the whole operation run by a bunch of sleep-deprived 20-year olds. What could go wrong? Here, Daily alums share their mistakes freely, weaving their stories through a half-century of American history with wit and wisdom--much of it hard-earned--but also justifiable pride in their idealism, their dedication, and the seriousness of the work they did while mere undergraduates. For all they've accomplished since their Daily days, you get the feeling they’d trade it all for another year at 420 Maynard--and you understand why." --John U. Bacon, bestselling author of Three and Out: Rich Rodriguez and the Michigan Wolverines in the Crucible of College Football and Endzone: The Rise, Fall, and Return of Michigan Football “I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate 125 years of student journalism than the essays contained in this wonderful volume. Going back some 55 years, the authors, all of whom are successful in their craft, have fashioned for us a unique window into the lives of students at the University of Michigan. Their stories are powerful and remind us of the magic of this place where students both are challenged and challenge others daily to change the world for the better.” —Mary Sue Coleman, President Emerita at the University of Michigan “This book provides a truly wonderful collection of essays by alumni of the Michigan Daily, one of the nation’s leading college newspapers, concerning their experiences as students covering some of the most important moments in the history of our university, the nation, and the world. Since many of these Michigan Daily alumni have gone on to important careers in American journalism, their fascinating perspectives provide strong evidence of the educational power of such student extracurricular experiences.” —James J. Duderstadt, President Emeritus at the University of Michigan

This book analyzes the various methods of selecting these champions and what made the teams special. Drawing on archives and early published works, a firsthand description of the 1869 inaugural game between Princeton and Rutgers is provided, along with details of how these earliest teams were managed. Download or read book Michigan written by Jim Cnockaert and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2004 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numbers appear to be incongruous. The University of Michigan has won more football games than any other Division I-A school, yet the program has only produced three Heisman Trophy winners and precious few winners of other individual awards. The numbers are understandable, however. The focus of Michigan football has always been on the team rather than the individual. The Team, The Team, The Team has for decades been one of the program's best known mantras. No one player, not even someone worthy of the Heisman, is considered greater than anyone else. Team goals come first. Still, the storied history of the Michigan football program is composed mostly of the exploits of its players. While that history might start with the likes of Tom Harmon, Desmond Howard, and Charles Woodson, it does not end there. For every Heisman Trophy winner, there are hundreds of other players who helped to make the Michigan winged helmet the most recognized symbol in college football. Michigan: Where Have You Gone? offers a look at 50 of those other players. Some had a singular moment that would forever define their careers. Others played an exceptional game, in many cases against the Wolverines' biggest rivals. Still others are remembered for a marvelous season. All of them helped Michigan become, as the words to the school's fight song suggest The leaders and best and the champions of the west.

Book Michigan Football

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatness of a college football team is not measured only by win totals or championships won. It is not evaluated simply by the number of All-Americans that have graced its uniform. It is not judged merely by the passion of its fans. The finest programs in America boast all these attributes, and one could argue that the University of Michigan is perched atop that list. They have captured eleven national titles and have won forty-two Big Ten crowns, more than any other team, including archrival Ohio State. They have placed thirty-four players and coaches into the College Football Hall of Fame. In this fast-paced account, lauded coaches and players alike are featured, including Fielding Yost, John “The Michigan Cannonball” Maulbetsch, Bennie Oosterbaan, Willis Ward, Fritz Crisler, Tom Harmon, Dan Dierdorf, Bo Schembechler, Desmond Howard, Elvis Grbac, Lloyd Carr, Brian Griese, Charles Woodson, Tom Brady, and Denard Robinson. A timeline also offers sport aficionados fast facts.
