Book Billion Dollar Bullet

Download or read book Billion Dollar Bullet written by Jerry Bevers and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was a time when young men were being drafted into the army and dying at an alarming rate. The estimated life expectancy of a new lieutenant in the field was sixteen minutes. The worst years of the war were from 1968 to 1969. A total of 16,899 men died. It is easy to see why young men tried to stay out of the fighting, including me. In spite of that, I ended up very much in the fighting, earning two Bronze Star Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge and going from the lowest rank of private to captain in three years. Come along for the ride of a lifetime!

Download or read book Forensic Analysis written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, testimony by representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in thousands of criminal cases has relied on evidence from Compositional Analysis of Bullet Lead (CABL), a forensic technique that compares the elemental composition of bullets found at a crime scene to the elemental composition of bullets found in a suspect's possession. Different from ballistics techniques that compare striations on the barrel of a gun to those on a recovered bullet, CABL is used when no gun is recovered or when bullets are too small or mangled to observe striations. Forensic Analysis: Weighing Bullet Lead Evidence assesses the scientific validity of CABL, finding that the FBI should use a different statistical analysis for the technique and that, given variations in bullet manufacturing processes, expert witnesses should make clear the very limited conclusions that CABL results can support. The report also recommends that the FBI take additional measures to ensure the validity of CABL results, which include improving documentation, publishing details, and improving on training and oversight.

Now, twenty-five years later, PowerPoint is installed on more than one billion computers, worldwide. In this book, Robert Gaskins (who invented the idea, managed its design and development, and then headed the new Microsoft group) tells the story of its first years, recounting the perils and disasters narrowly evaded as a startup, dissecting the complexities of being the first distant development group in Microsoft, and explaining decisions and insights that enabled PowerPoint to become a lasting success well beyond its original business uses.

Book Dodging Bullets

Download or read book Dodging Bullets written by Robert N. McCauley and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-11-22 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining summary of the broad reshaping of U.S. corporate finance in the last decade and a half. The late 1980s saw a huge wave of corporate leveraging. The U.S. financial landscape was dominated by a series of high-stakes leveraged buyouts as firms replaced their equity with new fixed debt obligations. Cash-financed acquisitions and defensive share repurchases also decapitalized corporations. This trend culminated in the sensational debt-financed bidding for RJR-Nabisco, the largest leveraged buyout of all time, before dramatically reversing itself in the early 1990s with a rapid return to equity. This entertaining summary of the broad reshaping of U.S. corporate finance in the last decade and a half looks at three major issues: why corporations leveraged up in the first place, why and how the leverage wave came to an end, and what policy lessons are to be drawn.Using the Minsky-Kindleberger model as a framework, the authors interpret the rise and fall of leveraging as a financial market mania. In the course of chronicling the return to equity in the 1990s, they address a number of important corporate finance questions: How important was the return to equity in relieving corporations' debt burdens? How did the return to equity affect the ability of young high-tech firms to finance themselves without selling out to foreign firms?
