Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletins of American Paleontology, 1895, Vol. 24 At the time of the publication of the monograph on the Claibornian fauna the reference showing Calatura Conrad, 1865 was preoccupied, had not been found. Since that time the author has located the citation which Conrad probably had in mind when be changed the name of the genus to Actaonema. The confusion in connection with these two names has been discussed in detail by the writer in the work on the fauna of the Claiborne and will not be repeated here. Conrad himself used Cœlatura previously in 1853 for a Naiad. Actaonema is therefore a substitute name for Calatura Conrad, 1865 and the problem of its genotype falls in that category. The one interpretation which was suggested on p. 156 of the Claiborne work may be climinated. Aldrichia Palmer is preoccupied by Aldrichia Coquillett in insects and Vaughan in corals. Aldrichia Palmer is herein renamed Timothia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletins of American Paleontology, Vol. 8: March 1919-March 1921 In resuming an intensive study of the east American Tertiary molluscan fauna after an interval of about twenty years, devoted of necessity to other phases of investigation, the senior author finds that there has accumulated in our laboratory several little lots of fossils, odds and ends, so to speak, that will scarcely fit into the general systematic studies here being undertaken, for some time to come. But a knowledge of these fossils and their occurrence may not be without interest now to Tertiary geologists and paleontologists in that they ma- give suggestions as to where to look and what to look for in various out-of-the-way places. The junior author has endeavored to clear up some of the obscure points in the molluscan faunas of the Eocene of Virginia and Trinidad, while the the senior author is responsible for what is said regarding those from the Carolinas and Texas. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletins of American Paleontology, 1943, Vol. 28 The last two types of calcite represent the geodic filling of cavi ties in the shell; here, as is usual in such cases, crystallization be gins with numerous fine small crystals around the periphery of the cavity and ends with the deposition of coarse and rather ir regular crystals at the center. However, the thin white lines re main to be explained, and must represent the position of some substance which controlled the pattern of calcite deposition. The course of these lines is shown in text figure 1, though no attempt has been made to differentiate the two types of calcite which to gether make up the geodic filling. It is apparent from the con dition of the specimen that the white lines must represent a struc ture which was present before calcite was deposited in the camerae. Further, the form of the line suggests that it was a thin tissue, which, if stretched out, would approximately line the camerae. The conclusion seems unavoidable that this represents a portion of the original cameral tissue which has become separated in part from the septa, to which it was originally attached, and was lying in a somewhat dis-torted condition in the camerae. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletins of American Paleontology, Vol. 3: May 1899 June 1902 Part I, on the Lignitic Pelecypoda, was published as Bulletin No. 9 (june 15, 1897) and hence forms a part of volume 2. It would have been better, doubtless so far as convenience of ref erence is concerned, could the present work have followed as Bulletin No. Io, thus having a continuous pagination with No. 9. This, however, seemed impossible for want of time for its prep aration during the fall of 1897; hence another took its place, and this is of necessity relegated to vol. 3. The general plan and purpose of these publications has already been duly set forth. We may therefore proceed directly to the subject matter of this paper as designated by the above given title.
