This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: `For any student of physical education, Physical Education provides an excellent springboard from which to explore theoretical aspects of their subject. The list of authors reads like a who′s who of PE and the extensive list of references provides opportunities to investigate areas of interest in more depth′ - John Matthews, Chief Executive PEA UK ′Distinguished authors who provide critical analyses of key contemporary issues in physical education: a core text.... Required reading for anybody seeking insight into the key issues of the day in physical education′ - Dr Dick Fisher, Vice Principal of St. Mary′s University College and Honorary President of the European Physical Education Associations Aimed at students of physical education and sport in schools, this book consists of a collection of essential readings, covering a breadth of salient and enduring themes, as well as contemporary issues. Many of the authors are distinguished figures who have, over the last two decades, made substantial and distinctive contributions to our understanding of the process of physical education. Themes explored include: the nature and values of physical education; the relationship between the subject and physical activity and health; the growth of examinations in physical education and innovations and developments in teaching styles and formats. The study of physical education has increasingly become multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary and the book reflects this, incorporating philosophical, sociological, pedagogical and comparative perspectives. This book will give readers, both in the UK and internationally, and at all levels of education, a greater understanding of the subject.

Book Assessment in Physical Education

Download or read book Assessment in Physical Education written by Bob Carroll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, assessment was underplayed or neglected in the training of physical education teachers. Physical education lay, largely, outside of school's formal structures of assessment, and books on assessment completely ignored this area of the school curriculum. With the introduction of the GCSE, Routes of Assessment (ROA) and the National Curriculum, assessment has become an important part of the teaching of PE. This book examines in detail the issues as they affect teachers.

Book Understanding Primary Physical Education

Download or read book Understanding Primary Physical Education written by Gerald Griggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to become a more effective practitioner every teacher needs to have a sound understanding of the theoretical, social and historical context in which their work takes place. Understanding Primary Physical Education goes further than any other textbook in exploring the development of physical education teaching at the primary and elementary level, drawing together important research from across the educational and sociological literature. The book goes beyond everyday teaching practice at an operational level to encourage students, trainee teachers and researchers to develop a critical understanding of policy, process and practice in primary physical education. By rooting everyday documents and everyday issues in a broader, connected educational and developmental landscape, this book challenges casual assumptions and encourages a better, more thoughtful teaching practice. It is an essential companion for any degree level course in primary physical education.
