Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Wellesley College, Vol. 43: President's Report and Statistical Studies of the College; January, 1954 Health lectures, a traditional part of the required freshman program, were under revision throughout the period in question. It has long been evident that personal health knowledge is so varied among entering students that a common course benefits few of them and that most college students are not interested in public health, in spite of one's wishing them to be interested. Informal dormitory discussions with the college psychiatrist and an occasional lecture in an extracurricular series on aspects of health seem to be proving more useful. The few examples cited above are intended to suggest the vitality of the annual review of academic offerings. The reten tion of the basic curriculum indicates satisfaction among the faculty, which students give every evidence of Sharing, but not complacency. Nor are we without academic problems. Too many departments reply, when asked what needs or desires they have, that they wish more elections by freshmen. The number of students who take further work in a subject, once having tried it, is heartening. But relatively few students elect on en trance work in Greek, Latin, Italian, or German, and though it is the second largest language department, the department of Spanish is aware of decreasing freshman elections. This book was released on 2017-01-14 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Wellesley College; November 15, 1966, Vol. 56: Issue Containing the President's Report, 1964-1965, 1965-1966 During the two years covered by this Report interest centered first in preparing for and then in implementing the academic calendar and the degree requirements which had been adopted in june 1964 to take effect in September 1965. In 1964-1965 the members of many departments planned new advanced courses or redistribution of materials among courses, new sequences for major students, new ways of presenting some of the continuing courses, or, especially in departments which were chang ing from a two-unit to a one-unit introduction to their discipline, new introductory courses. The most extensive and carefully structured revisions occurred in the departments of Biological Sciences, Chem istry and Geology. Only a few departments chose to postpone con sideration of revisions until they could see how their established courses would fit into the new scheme. The foreign language departments found little need to consider revisions in order to relate to the all college changes, except in relation to the short third term. Members of many other departments engaged in serious rethinking in the light of the earlier faculty discussions and revised or reconfirmed their various offerings, so that the students in 1965-1966 saw substantive change as well as changes in schedule. Some illustrations follow of departmental planning in 1964 1965: The Department of Art planned new sequences and new seminars for alternate years which it expected would strengthen its offerings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 29: President's Report Number for the Year 1938-1939 The Personnel Bureau reports that 245 students had term time employment, earning an average Of about twenty dollars during the year. In the exchanges and agencies on the campus fifteen students earned in excess of one hundred dollars and one student earned as much as $233. There are about fifty students engaged in regular jobs as assistants, campus guides, and clerical workers. Thirty-two awards of twenty dollars were made to students who did some kind of regular work for college depart ments. The comment of the Librarian in reference to her four cooperative scholarship holders suggests some of the values of this type Of employment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 2: May, 1939 NO possession could be more precious to us. In this delicately finished painting, in its rich jewel-like colors and subtle harmonies, in its interesting composition, we shall have a never failing source of keen esthetic enjoyment. But our joy is enhanced because in this painting we find also the true portrait of Miss Avery. I think Mrs. Kara gheusian will understand our feeling, for the searching study of a personality, the untiring endeavor to express it fully are outstanding characteristics of her work. It is this quest for complete realization which made her destroy the fine miniature she had completed and, starting afresh, pro duce the even finer portrait we have here today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports Number of the Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 39: September, 1949 Of Aristophanes' Frogs by the Greek department have all enlarged the world in which twentieth-century American under graduates live. The many Off-campus contacts Of members Of the French, Spanish, and Italian departments further relate the College to the foreign-language groups here and abroad. Encouragement to foreign graduate students was given by the action instituting a Certificate in American Studies available for graduates Of foreign universities who cannot spend two years to acquire a master's degree but would like some evidence Of accomplishment for a year's study. Furthermore it is believed that a course to introduce foreign guests to American culture may be more profitable for visitors than one devoted to academic disciplines which might be pursued in any country and perhaps better in a graduate school Of a university. Undergraduates have contributed to the enrichment Of the College by giving part Of their gift to the 75th Anniversary Fund in the form Of scholarships for two displaced students from Europe. They assumed responsibility not only for the expenses (over and above tuition which was waived by the trustees) but will make necessary provision for vacation travel and entertain ment for the two young women who will enter next fall. This pre-anniversary year has been a good one for taking stock on a number Of matters. A special committee Of the Academic Council has been working on the formulation Of long term policies in connection with admission. Its work Of this year was largely an analysis Of present practice, resulting in a summary statement Of present practice which was adopted by the Academic Council as a basis for further deliberations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 6: Annual Reports, President and Treasurer, 1926-1927 To the Board of Trustees: - I have the honor to present the report for the academic year 1926-27, closing on June 30, 1927. The usual supplementary reports of other administrative officers are printed in full and should be consulted to obtain a complete picture of the college year. During this year there have been significant changes in the membership of the Board of Trustees. Five members of the Board have resigned: Dr. William E.Huntington, Dr. George Edwin Horr, Mrs. Louise McCoy North, Miss Caroline Hazard, and Mr. Edwin Farnham Greene. Dr. Huntington was elected to the Board in 1906 and during the twenty years of his service has been a member of several committees, notably that on Educational Policy and on the Reorganization of the Board. Dr. Huntington's daughter was a student of the College for two years, and perhaps that accounts in part for the interest which both Dr. and Mrs. Huntington have constantly shown in the life of the College. His resignation was accepted with regret in November, 1926. Dr. Horr became a member of the Board in 1904. While his duties as President of the Newton Theological Institution did not permit him to give much time to the Board, he was a valuable member of the Committee on Educational Policy and was always a staunch supporter of a liberal policy. He offered his resignation because of failing health and it was accepted in November, 1926. Mrs. Louise McCoy North resigned in January, 1927, after a service of more than thirty years. She was a member of the first class to graduate from Wellesley College and was one of the first three trustees nominated by the alumnae in 1893. After serving two terms of six years each as alumna trustee, she was elected by the trustees to serve without limit of term. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 2: Annual Reports President and Treasurer 1915-16 I have the honor to submit my fifth report as President of Wellesley College, covering the year ending June 30, 1916. Much interesting material supplementing this report will be found in the reports of the Dean, the Chairman of the Graduate Committee, the Librarian, and the Director of Halls of Resi dence, published herewith. On March 16, 1916, the Librarian of the College, Henrietta St. Barbe Brooks, died at her home after a long illness. Because of physical disability Miss Brooks at her own suggestion gave only half time to the College during the academic year 1914 - 15. In April, 1915, increasing weakness made it necessary for her to give up her work altogether, and while she gave valuable counsel to the library staff until the time of her death, she was not able to return to the Library after the spring of 1915. Miss Brooks was appointed assistant librarian in 1903, acting librarian in 1909, and upon the death of the librarian, Caroline F. Pierce, she was appointed librarian in 1911. The minute adopted by the Academic Council admirably characterizes Miss Brooks' administration of the Library and is given in full.
