This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States National Museum The outline of this work was presented as a communication to the Philosophical Society of Washington, January 22, 1881. The aim of the writer was to furnish a guide to botanists in exploring the locality and an aid to beginners in practical botany. To this latter class the Appendix is especially addressed, but as it is equally applicable to other localities, and as nothing, it is believed, analogous to it has been published, it may be found useful outside of Washington. The introduction also contains suggestions which, if followed in a sufficient number of localities by those preparing local catalogues, would greatly aid in making the botanists of the country acquainted with the geographical distribution of plants thoughout the United States and the special peculiarities of certain regions. The manifest imperfections of the treatise may not be without their uses in stimulating local collectors and others to correct them and produce something better. In the investigation of the flora of Washington, so many able and active botanists and so many energetic amateurs have co-operated that it would almost seem invidious to single out any as the subjects of special thanks, and it has been deemed the most equitable plan to give special credit to the first discoverer of each rare plant, wherever this can be known, under its proper head in the detailed enumeration. I cannot, however, refrain from expressing my special obligations to Dr. George Vasey, Botanist to the Department of Agriculture, for his kindness in placing the National Herbarium at my disposal and in examining and reporting upon many critical and puzzling forms, especially in the Cyperaceae and Gramineae. I also desire to acknowledge in an especial manner the valuable services of Mr. M. S. Bebb, of Eockford, III., in identifying the local Salices, which, though comparatively few, are very interesting and in a high degree confusing to any but a trained specialist like Mr. Bebb. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin United States National Museum, 1914 The present study of the Caprimulgine genus Chordeiles found its origin in the attempt to identify the nighthawks of Texas. It soon became evident that nothing short of a thorough revision of the two North American species, Chordeiles virginianus and Chordeiles acutipennis, would produce anything like satisfactory results. This was finally undertaken, partly at the instance of Mr. Robert Ridgway; and the only other species of the genus, Chordeiles rupestris, has been included for the sake of completeness. By reason of the complicated and almost infinite variations due to sex, age, individuals, and geographic areas, the present group is one of the most difficult of all North American birds; and its elucidation has involved the expenditure of an incredible amount of time and labor. The material available consists altogether of 1,165 specimens, including the types of most of the valid forms (excepting Chordeiles virginianus virginianus, Chordeiles virginianus aserriensis, Chordeiles virginianus minor, Chordeiles acutipennis acutipennis, Chordeiles acutipennis exilis, and Chordeiles rupestris rupestris), and of one synonym, Chordeiles gundlachii Lawrence. These specimens are distributed among the three species as follows: Chordeiles virginianus, 780; Chordeiles acutipennis, 379; Chordeiles rupestris, 6. Download or read book A List of the Publications of the United States National Museum written by Randolph I. Geare and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Publications of the United States National Museum: 1875-1900, Including the Annual Reports, Proceedings, Bulletins, Special Bulletins, and Circulars; With Index to Titles The purpose of this bulletin is to present a list, with index to titles, of the publications of the U. S. National Museum, which consist of an annual Report, an annual volume of Proceedings, Bulletins, Special Bulletins, and Circulars. The Report constitutes the second volume of the Smithsonian Report, and the first one thus issued is for the year 1884. A certain number of these volumes is assigned to the Museum for distribution to libraries, to correspondents, and to contributors to the collections, while a considerable part of the edition is distributed by members of Congress. The special papers in these volumes, for the most part describing ethnological collections in the National Museum, are furnished free to those interested. The series of Proceedings of the National Museum began in 1878, and 23 volumes, containing 1,240 separate papers, have been published. These papers, which are technical, describe, or are based wholly or in part upon, material in the Museum. The volumes are sent only to libraries, while the separate papers are furnished without charge to specialists and others engaged in scientific work. The first number of the Bulletin was issued in 1875. Of the latest in the series, No. 50 (The Birds of North and Middle America), only the first volume, relating to the Fringillidae, has been issued. The bulletins are intended principally for libraries, but are also given to known specialists working on the groups to which they relate. Special Bulletins, in quarto, have been issued at irregular intervals, but this form has been used only where a size larger than octavo was deemed especially desirable. The last one published (No. IV) is the first volume of a monograph of the American Hydroids, and relates to the group Plumularidae. The primary object of the issuance of the series of Circulars was to bring to immediate notice urgent wants of the Museum, or to promulgate special information with the least possible delay. The first circular was published in 1881, and at the time when the present list was sent to the Printing Office this series contained fifty numbers. None of the above-mentioned publications are sold by the Museum, but when the Museum can not supply them, persons desiring to purchase are advised to write to the Superintendent of Documents, Union Building, Washington, D. C. Occasionally the Museum exchanges its publications for desirable specimens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin United States National Museum, 1877 The general principle to be observed in making collections of natural history, especially in a country but little explored, is to gather all the species which may present themselves, subject to the convenience of the collector or practicability of transportation. The number of specimens of each species to be secured should, of course, include all the varieties of form or condition caused by the different features of age, sex, or season, and also show, within reasonable limits the range of individual variation. As the object of the Institution in making its collections is not merely to possess the different species, but to determine their geographical distribution and variation, their migrations, and other matters of scientific interest, it becomes important to have as full series as practicable from each locality. In commencing such collections, the commonest species should be secured first, as being most characteristic, and least likely to be found elsewhere, and even the commonest should be taken while they are to be had, since they may totally disappear when least expected. It is a fact well known in the history of museums, that the species which from their abundance would be first expected are the last to be received. In every little known region the species which are the commonest are rarest elsewhere, and many an unscientific collector in Texas, Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, etc., has been surprised to find what he considered the least valuable species in his collection (owing to the ease with which they had been obtained in numbers) more prized by the naturalist than the rarities, which were in fact only well-known stragglers from more accessible localities. The first specimen procured, however imperfect, should be preserved, at least until a better can be obtained. Where a small proportion only of the specimens collected can be transported, such species should be selected as are least likely to be procured in other localities or on other occasions.
