Download or read book Krakatau 1883 the Volcanic Eruption and Its Effects written by Tom Simkin and published by Computer Science Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 1983 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Blurb: On August 26 and 27, 1883, the island volcano Krakatau erupted, ejecting more than four cubic miles of debris and creating a huge plume of gas and ashes that rose to an altitude of thirty miles. Spectacular, fiery sunsets resulted, lighting the skies of North America and Europe in the following months. This was one of history's most terrifying and destructive volcanic eruptions. Great sea waves crested to heights of 118 feet, crashing on the coasts of Java and Sumatra and killing more than 30,000 people. The eruption's loudest blasts were heard nearly 3,000 miles away. Simkin and Fiske have gathered eighty-eight eyewitness accounts, describing the events in the words of people who were there, and have selected twenty-eight scientific interpretations of the various phenomena written over the last one-hundred years. They have illustrated the book with more than 250 photographs, engravings, drawings, and maps, and have traced an extensive chronology of events. The result is a comprehensive volume on this benchmark event-history's most famous eruption. In addition to geologists, oceanographers will be interested in the devastating sea waves, meteorologists in the worldwide atmospheric effects, biologists in the return of life to barren island remnants, but any general reader will be fascinated by the eyewitness accounts of this spectacular eruption and its truly global effects.
Download or read book Eocene Biodiversity written by Gregg F. Gunnell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, this work was designed to document and study the diversification of modern mammalian groups and was quite successful and satisfying. However, as field and laboratory work continued, there began to develop a suspicion that not all of the Eocene story was being told. It became apparent that most fossil samples, especially those from the American West, were derived from similar preservational circumstances and similar depositional settings. A program was initiated to look for other potential sources of fossil samples, either from non-traditional lithologies or from geographic areas that were not typically sampled. As this program of research grew it began to demonstrate that different lithologies and different geographic areas told different stories from those that had been developed based on more typical faunal assemblages. This book is conceived as an introduction to non-traditional Eocene fossils samples, and as a place to document and discuss features of these fossil assemblages that are rare or that come from rarely represented habitats.

This book was released on 2005-03-30 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plant fossil record indicates that the genus Metasequoia was widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere from the early Late Cretaceous to the Plio-Pleistocene. Today the genus has shrunk to one species with approximately 5,000 mature individuals in southeastern China’s Xiahoe Valley. This book distills the current understanding of the biology, ecology and physiology of fossil and living Metasequoia, current research directions and problems that remain unresolved.
