Book Powers of the Real

Download or read book Powers of the Real written by Diane Wei Lewis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powers of the Real analyzes the cultural politics of cinema’s persuasive sensory realism in interwar Japan. Examining cultural criticism, art, news media, literature, and film, Diane Wei Lewis shows how representations of women and signifiers of femininity were used to characterize new forms of pleasure and fantasy enabled by consumer culture and technological media. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, she analyzes the role that images of women played in articulating the new expressions of identity, behavior, and affiliation produced by cinema and consumer capitalism. In the process, Lewis traces new discourses on the technological mediation of emotion to the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and postquake mass media boom. The earthquake transformed the Japanese film industry and lent urgency to debates surrounding cinema’s ability to reach a mass audience and shape public sentiment, while the rise of consumer culture contributed to alarm over rampant materialism and “feminization.” Demonstrating how ideas about emotion and sexual difference played a crucial role in popular discourse on cinema’s reach and its sensory-affective powers, Powers of the Real offers new perspectives on media history, the commodification of intimacy and emotion, film realism, and gender politics in the “age of the mass society” in Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mount Geumgang, also known as the Diamond Mountains, is perhaps the most famous and emotionally resonant site on the Korean Peninsula, a magnificent range of rocky peaks, waterfalls, and lagoons, dotted with pavilions and temples. Since ancient times, it has inspired cultural pride, spurred spiritual and artistic pilgrimages, and engendered an outpouring of creative expression. Yet since the partition of Korea in 1945 situated it in the North, Mount Geumgang has remained largely inaccessible to visitors, shrouded in legend, loss, and longing. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} Diamond Mountains: Travel and Nostalgia in Korean Art is the first book in English to explore the pictorial representations of this grand and varied landscape. The special exhibition it accompanies, organized by Soyoung Lee, Curator in the Department of Asian Art, examines the evolution of Diamond Mountains imagery from the golden age of Korean true-view painting in the eighteenth century to the present day. Even today, when a profusion of Instagram photos can make the world’s most obscure sites and geographical oddities seem familiar, the Diamond Mountains portrayed here in album leaves, scrolls, and screens will be a revelation to many.

Book French Sculpture Following the Franco Prussian War 1870 0

Download or read book French Sculpture Following the Franco Prussian War 1870 0 written by Michael Dorsch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Sculpture Following the Franco-Prussian War, 1870-80 investigates the role played by the trope of the 'strong woman, fallen man' in re-establishing morale among the French people following the Franco-Prussian War. The study explores how certain French sculptors - including Falgui?, Merci?Barrias, and Rodin - presented this recent history of defeat in commemorative monuments that increasingly dominated public space across France during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Though it focuses on French nationalism and the commemoration of war (or, as is the case with the French following the Franco-Prussian War, the commemoration of defeat), this volume also examines shifts in gender roles in the latter half of the nineteenth century, and the impact of military defeat on relations between the sexes. The book probes the aesthetic discourse of the period concerning the merits of traditional allegorical sculpture versus new-fangled realist sculpture in depicting modern life. Drawing on extensive archival research, Michael Dorsch gives a voice to the sculptures he discusses, restoring these often ignored works to their proper place in history.

Book In the Studio

  • Author : Brian R. Jacobson
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2020-07-21
  • ISBN : 0520297601
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book In the Studio written by Brian R. Jacobson and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studios are, at once, material environments and symbolic forms, sites of artistic creation and physical labor, and nodes in networks of resource circulation. They are architectural places that generate virtual spaces—worlds built to build worlds. Yet, despite being icons of corporate identity, studios have faded into the background of critical discourse and into the margins of film and media history. In response, In the Studio demonstrates that when we foreground these worlds, we gain new insights into moving-image culture and the dynamics that quietly mark the worlds on our screens. Spanning the twentieth century and moving globally, this unique collection tells new stories about studio icons—Pinewood, Cinecittà, Churubusco, and CBS—as well as about the experimental workplaces of filmmakers and artists from Aleksandr Medvedkin to Charles and Ray Eames and Hollis Frampton.

Book Les Fauves

    Book Details:
  • Author : Russell T. Clement
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 1994-05-25
  • ISBN : 0313369550
  • Pages : 720 pages

Download or read book Les Fauves written by Russell T. Clement and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-05-25 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive scholarly bibliography/research guide/sourcebook on the major French Fauve painters (Henri Matisse and Georges Braque are treated in separate Greenwood bio-bibliographies). It includes information on 3,120 books and articles as well as chronologies, biographical sketches, and exhibition lists. Each artist receives a primary and secondary bibliography with many annotated entries. Secondary bibliographies include details about each artists' life and career, relationships with other artists, work in various media, iconography, and more. Designed for art historians, art students, museum and gallery curators, and art lovers alike, this volume organizes the vast literature surrounding this fascinating, revolutionary, 20th-century art group. Genuinely new art is always challenging, sometimes even shocking to those unprepared for it. In 1905, the paintings of Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and their friends shocked conservative museum-goers; hence, the eventual popularity of art critic Louis Vauxcelles's tag les fauves, or wild beasts by which these artists became known. Although it lasted only three or four years, Fauvism is recognized as the first artistic revolution of international consequence in the 20th century. It was based on the glorification of pure saturated colors and the free expression of primitivism. It was a dynamic sensualism; an equilibrium of passion and order, fire and austerity that could not last. By the end of 1908, Fauvism collapsed in the face of Cubism, which, moreover, several Fauve artists helped to form.
