Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard College, in Cambridge, 1890-1891, Vol. 20 The method of staining nerve-fibres which I have employed consists of a modified use of Weigert's haematoxylin. The tissue which was stained by this method was for the most part killed in hot water, although I have also successfully stained nerve-fibres which were killed in chromic acid and Kleinenberg's picro-sulphuric acid. Sections of the optic nerve which had been mounted on the slide and carried into water were treated for about half a minute with an aqueous solution of potassic hydrate 11670. They were then thoroughly rinsed in distilled water and transferred to Weigert's haematoxylin. Here they remained for about three hours at a temperature of 50 C. They were then rinsed again in distilled water, carried through the grades of alcohol, and after being dehydrated with alcohol of about they were cleared in turpentine and mounted in benzole balsam. Each nerve-fibre when so treated had a distinct blue-gray outline. The sections do not over stain even when they are kept in the dye for a prolonged period, and there is of course no subsequent decoloring. This method yields fair results when applied to nerves from any part of the lobster's body, but it is especially successful in treating that portion of the optic nerve which intervenes between the retina and the optic ganglion. And XI.) which are thickly scattered over the exumbrella surface of the disk, the palps, and the tentacles. These protuberances are thickly clustered near the centre of the disk, where they appear as little hemispherical projections above the general surface near the outer edges of the disk, however, they are elongate in' shape, and at the extreme edge they are again hemispherical (see Figs. 19, 26, 28, and If a weak solution of picric acid in 50% alcohol is allowed to permeate the sea water in which the medusa is living the nematocysts are exploded with great energy. Ordinarily they then present the appearance shown in Figure 21, Plate IX., but occasionally one finds one resembling that shown in Figure 22, where the main shaft of the thread is tightly coiled in a right-handed helix, and a small ellipsoidal mass of protoplasm (p) is borne upon the free extremity. It is very difficult to imagine how such a thread could be turned outward in the ordinary manner, and it is probable that the extreme stimulation caused by the picric acid produced an abnormal discharge of the nematocysts. The nematocysts which exhibited this peculiar structure were invariably immature in development, and were only about one tenth as numerous as the ordinary normal ones. In the sequel, therefore, a list is given of all the type and figured specimens belonging to the largest single collection of Bolca fishes which at present exists. III the following brief historical summary it is hoped that some facts have been brought together relating to the study of this fauna which shall be of service to investigators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard College, in Cambridge, 1945-1946, Vol. 96 In order to understand the morphological variation found in peru viana (sensu Boulenger) some knowledge of the geographic conditions encountered by this snake in its wide range is necessary. The bulk of the Peruvian and Bolivian specimens have come from the Andean region from central Peru into Bolivia. Apparently they are primarily highland snakes for they occur at least as high as feet, and few have been taken at low elevations. The lowest record on the west side of the Andes is meters (about feet); on the east side a few have worked their way farther down from the mountains and have reached at least the edge of the tropical lowlands. Specimens have been taken in the predominantly lowland department of Madre de Dios in Peru and also from the city of Santa Cruz (elevation about 500 meters, feet) in Bolivia. Consequently many of these snakes have encountered alpine conditions with a vegetation characterized by procumbent dwarf shrubs and low cushion or rosette-shaped plants; others, the more favorable and moist conditions found on descending the eastern side of the mountains, where areas of grass steppes and scattered shrubs, savanna and evergreen woods, and tropical rain forest are encountered more or less in succession. Those from the western slopes of the Andes in this region have found little precipita tion due to prevailing south-easterly winds. Thus the climate at the higher elevations is semiarid with a xerophytic vegetation of cacti, low shrubs, and heath. Lower down, there is a belt of desert crossed by fertile river valleys. This is complicated along the narrow coastal plain by a rich lomas vegetation dependant upon heavy fogs, but Tachymem's does not extend this low in Peru.
