Download or read book Earthquakes written by and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy the whole cities. At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacement of the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity. Earthquakes are caused not only by rupture of geological faults but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests. This book addresses the multidisciplinary topic of earthquake hazards and risk, one of the fastest growing, relevant, and applied fields of research and study practiced within the geosciences and environment. This book addresses principles, concepts, and paradigms of earthquakes, as well as operational terms, materials, tools, techniques, and methods including processes, procedures, and implications.

Download or read book Treatise on Geophysics Volume 3 written by Tom Herring and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geodesy, which is the science of measuring the size and shape of the Earth, explores the theory, instrumentation and results from modern geodetic systems. The beginning sections of the volume cover the theory of the Earth's gravity field, the instrumentation for measuring the field, and its temporal variations. The measurements and results obtained from variations in the rotation of the Earth are covered in the sections on short and long period rotation hanges. Space based geodetic methods, including the global positioning system (GPS) and Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR), are also examined in detail. - Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic with in depth detail - Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research - Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding - Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Download or read book Hydrodynamics of Offshore Structures written by Subrata Kumar Chakrabarti and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of hydrodynamics applied to offshore structures is vast. The topics covered in this book aim to help the reader understand basic principles while at the same time giving the designer enough information for particular designs. Thus, results are given with derivations, and applications are discussed with the aid of examples, with an overview of the advantages and limitations of the method involved. This makes the book suitable as a text for undergraduate and graduate students specializing in offshore and ocean engineering.

Download or read book Early Warning Systems for Natural Disaster Reduction written by Jochen Zschau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for a broad audience this book offers a comprehensive account of early warning systems for hydro meteorological disasters such as floods and storms, and for geological disasters such as earthquakes. One major theme is the increasingly important role in early warning systems played by the rapidly evolving fields of space and information technology. The authors, all experts in their respective fields, offer a comprehensive and in-depth insight into the current and future perspectives for early warning systems. The text is aimed at decision-makers in the political arena, scientists, engineers and those responsible for public communication and dissemination of warnings.

Download or read book Structural Deflections written by Theodore V. Galambos and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature survey and state-of-the-art study was complied using 233 primary source documents, research papers, and texts. Over 800 documents were scanned to arrive at the primary source documents. The problem of structural deflections is discussed and reviewed in its component areas of static and dynamic deflections as related to forcing functions and structural characteristics. Also the interactions of major structural dflections with building structures subsystems and human occupants is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on serviceability limit states of deflections. Detailed comparisons of human response to structural vibrations are also made. The report is broad in scope and covers the areas of analysis, design and experimentation. (Author).
