This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of State Ranger School on College Forest at Wanakena, New York, 1913 There is a very prevalent feeling among both timber owners and foresters that this first Ranger School to be organized in the East has an important part to play in the development of Forestry in this country. The School gives an unusually thorough and practical train ing of one and two years, fitting men for such positions as rangers, guards, tree planting experts, nursery foremen and managers of forest estates. Young men who have already had some experience in lum bering operations or who are well trained in woodcraft will find this course a material help to them in preparation for the more expert quality of service which is demanded by modern methods of handling timber holdings. Neither the one nor the two-year course is offered as an education in Forestry. The man who completes the course satisfactorily will be a trained ranger, guard or an expert in tree planting and forest nursery practice but not a professional forester. These courses are not recommended for persons in poor health or for those who have little inclination for the rough life of the woods. There will be no opportunity to earn money during the School terms. It is felt that students should be able and willing to save sufficient funds to meet their expenses before beginning so short a course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Wake Forest College, Vol. 8: April, 1913; Catalogue, Seventy-Eighth Session, 1912-13 During the first quarters of the lgth century there were few schools in North Carolina. The State University was the only institution of higher learning. The efforts to or ganize a public school system had proved futile. During this period there came into North Carolina several well trained young Baptist ministers, among Whom were Samuel Wait, Thomas Meredith, and John Armstrong. They found the Baptists of the State numerous but Without organization or educated leadership. Under the influence of these men was organized in 1830 the Baptist State Convention, one of Whose chief purposes was the tralning of young men called to the ministry. There was no school under Baptist con trol to which such young men could be sent. There were in the State, however, schools taught by Baptists. These young men were sent to them, and their expenses were borne partly by the Convention. The need of a Baptist school was urgent. At the second annual session of the Convention, in 1832, a committee was appointed to plan such a school. Book Higher Education and Regional Development

Download or read book Higher Education and Regional Development written by Rómulo Pinheiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the role of universities as critical actors in the socio-economic development of peripheral regions in Norway and the Czech Republic. Examining the ambiguities of the traditional mission of a university in comparison to contemporary demands, the editors and contributors move past single-case analyses to adopt an integrated conceptual and analytical framework. The authors question whether universities can indeed ‘fix’ the conditions of any region they operate in, as is a common assumption, by examining peripheral regions, many of which have been devastated by natural or man-made disasters. Simultaneously acknowledging the complexities at the heart of both higher education institutions and regions, this book brings together a set of critical contributions that shed light on how universities can fulfil their role in peripheral regions rather than knowledge-intensive cities and towns. This uniquely researched book will be of interest to students and scholars of higher education, universities and communities, and education policy.

Book Human Knowledge and Human Nature

Download or read book Human Knowledge and Human Nature written by Peter Carruthers and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary debates in epistemology devote much attention to the nature of knowledge, but neglect the question of its sources. The distinctive focus of Human Knowledge and Human Nature is on the latter, especially on the question of innateness. Peter Carruthers's aim is to transform and reinvigorate contemporary empiricism, while also providing an introduction to a range of issues in the theory of knowledge. He gives a lively presentation and assessment of the claims of classical empiricism, particularly its denial of substantive a priori knowledge and also of innate knowledge. He argues that we would be right to reject the substantive a priori but not innateness, and then presents a novel account of the main motivation behind empiricism, which leaves contemporary empiricists free to accept innate knowledge and concepts. He closes with a discussion of scepticism, arguing that acceptance of innate concepts may lead to a decisive resolution of the problem in favour of realism. The book will be of equal interest to students of the history of modern philosophy and the theory of knowledge, and their teachers. It provides a new way of looking at classical empiricism, and should lead to a renewal of interest in the innateness issue in epistemology.
