Book Translation as Social Action

Download or read book Translation as Social Action written by Palma Zlateva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Translation as Social Action is a varied collection of essays, which addresses translation as social action as its central theme, the book proposes a model of the translator as an agent in his or her own right. Translation is seen not just as a transfer of meanings from one language to another, but rather as an arena in which different cultures meet in the person of the translator. This perspective provides a complete contrast to Western translation studies, concerned with whether or not translation is really possible. Together the essays reveal a distinct tradition grappling with the most important topics in translation studies in ways that are different and challenging. The collection is essential reading for translation studies, as well as providing an interesting perspective on comparative literature and Eastern European studies.

Book The Cultures of Economic Migration

Download or read book The Cultures of Economic Migration written by Mr Suman Gupta and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-12-28 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the processes of economic migration, the social conditions that follow it and the discourses that underlie research into it. Reflecting critically on economic migration and on the process of studying and creating knowledge about it, the contributors address the question of whether recent enquiries into modernity bring a newer and better comprehension of the nature of dislocation and movement, or whether these serve simply to replicate familiar modes of placing people and individuals. The book is organized into perspectives in and on specific continents – Europe, Asia and Africa – in order to explore notions regarding economic migration within and across regions as well as towards displacing the Eurocentrism of many studies of migration.

Book Perspectives on the Enlargement of the European Union

Download or read book Perspectives on the Enlargement of the European Union written by Cameron Ross and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a historic decision at its Copenhagen Conference in June 1993, the European Union gave the green light to an eastward expansion. Initially, invitations to join the EU went out to just six countries of the former Soviet bloc: Poland, Hungary, the Czech and Slovak republics, Romania, and Bulgaria. However, it was not long before there was a queue of other applicants from Eastern Europe pressing at the EU’s gates. There were real fears in some quarters that the economic reforms demanded for entry into the EU would bring about more ‘shock’ than ‘therapy’ in Eastern Europe, and that a rapid move to the market would undermine support for democracy. This volume of essays, by a group of internationally recognised experts, focuses on the eastward expansion of the European Union and the EU’s relations with the applicant states. The primary aim of the volume is to provide a historical and analytical account of the enlargement process and to provide readers with a scholarly road map to guide them through the intricacies of the rapidly changing enlargement terrain. After region-wide studies of the enlargement process, there are case studies of eight countries: Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Poland, and Estonia.

Download or read book Bulgarian Harmony written by Dr Kalin S Kirilov and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been to date no scholarly study of the captivating sounds of Bulgarian vertical sonorities and an in-depth study of the Bulgarian harmonic system is long overdue. Kalin Kirilov traces the gradual formation of a unique harmonic system that developed in three styles of Bulgarian music: village music from the 1930s to the 1990s, wedding music from the 1970s to 2000, and choral arrangements (obrabotki) - creations of the socialist period (1944-1989). Kirilov classifies the different approaches to harmony and situates them in their historical and cultural contexts, establishing new systems for analysis. In the process, he introduces a new system for the categorization of scales.

Book Sustainable Mountain Regions Challenges and Perspectives in Southeastern Europe

Download or read book Sustainable Mountain Regions Challenges and Perspectives in Southeastern Europe written by Boian Koulov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central to this edited volume is the proposition that the mountainous border region of Southeastern Europe needs to become a special target of European Union scale, regional development policy-making. Vivid case studies from eleven Central and Southeast European states present diverse perspectives on this region’s physical geography, economy and demographics and demonstrate the integrative potential of the geographic perspective in mountain research. Europe as a whole has a lot to gain from a “sustainable mountains” policy, especially in Southeast Europe. In their focus on the sustainable development of such areas, the chapters consider regional development policy, ecosystem services assessment, small-scale tourism, and forestry management. This book will be of interest to a wide audience, including academics, students, and practitioners in the fields of geography, ecology, and environmental studies.

Book Co Engineering and Participatory Water Management

Download or read book Co Engineering and Participatory Water Management written by Katherine A. Daniell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective participatory water management requires effective co-engineering – the collective process whereby organisational decisions are made on how to bring stakeholders together. This trans-disciplinary book highlights the challenges involved in the collective initiation, design, implementation and evaluation of water planning and management processes. It demonstrates how successful management requires the effective handling of two participatory processes: the stakeholder water management process and the co-engineering process required to organise this. The book provides practical methods for supporting improved participatory processes, including the application of theory and models to aid decision-making. International case studies of these applications from Australia, Europe and all over the world, including Africa, are used to examine negotiations and leadership approaches, and their effects on the participatory stakeholder processes. This international review of participatory water governance forms an important resource for academic researchers in hydrology, environmental management and water policy, and also practitioners and policy-makers working in water management.
