For outdoor culture Hyacinths will do Well in any good garden soil, but a light, rich soil suits them best. Beds should be well drained to prevent bulbs from rotting or too much water standing on the beds during winter. Plant bulbs six inches apart and from four to six inches deep, according to the heaviness of the soil. Hyacinths may be planted any time from October to December. When a crust has been formed, cover the beds with straw, litter or leaves to protect the bulbs from hard freezing. Remove the covering when all danger of heavy frost is over in the Spring. The bulbs need not be removed after blooming, but if you wish to rem them wait until the leaves wither and die down. Pot culture of Hyacinths is very fascinating. Use a light soil or potting soil to fill the pots. Pot fairly firm and let the tip of the bulb just peep out of the soil. After potting water them well and then set pots in a cool, airy place, covering the pots with ashes until the bulbs rooted. They should remain in the dark for six weeks or more, when they can be brought to the light. A shady. Position is best for a few days, after which they may be placed where they are to bloom. One bulb 1s enough for a five-inch pot, or three bulbs m a six or seven-inch pot or pan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Flowerfield Spring Flowering Bulbs and Roots

Download or read book Flowerfield Spring Flowering Bulbs and Roots written by Flowerfield Bulb Farm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flowerfield Spring Flowering Bulbs and Roots: Autumn Planting 1939 The cultural requirements are simple for this Iris. The plants can be grown in any average well drained sweet soil in a sunny location where the plants will be assured all the sunshine possible. Bonemeal has been proven a satisfactory fertilizer. Manure can be used in rotted form, only if well spaded under so that no humus will come in contact with the rhizomes. It has been found that the best time to plant Iris is from midsummer to the last part of September, so that the roots will become well established before freezing. We prefer to plant during July and August. If the soil appears dry at planting time, thoroughly soak the dug up area to be planted, spread the roots over the moist surface, replace the soil over them. The rhizome should be just below surface with the soil tamped down around it, so that it is firmly held in position by the packed soil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dubbed the Bulb Hunter in a 2006 New York Times feature story, Chris Wiesinger took his passion for bulbs to vacant lots, abandoned houses, cemeteries, and construction sites throughout the South in search of botanical survivors whose descendants had never seen the inside of a big-box chain store. The vintage specimens Wiesinger sought came from hardy, historic stock, adapted to human neglect and hot climates, reappearing faithfully over decades without care or cultivation. Traveling back roads, speaking to strangers, looking for the telltale color of a remnant iris or lily, Wiesinger started digging, then began trying to grow and share the bulbs he collected. From its humble beginnings on an East Texas sweet potato farm, his Southern Bulb Company has now grown into a full-fledged business known throughout the world, propagating and selling the rare, tough, heritage plants Wiesinger still seeks out and champions. Nicknamed “Flower” by his fellow cadets at Texas A&M University, Wiesinger relates his adventures in bulb hunting, telling stories of the bulbs he has discovered and weaving in his own life story as a student, plantsman, and small business owner. He then teams with veteran horticulturist William C. Welch to provide advice on how to grow and appreciate the bulbs that have been rescued and reintroduced. This “primer” gives gardeners information on what bulbs to grow where, when to plant them and when they bloom, and how to incorporate them with other plants in the landscape. Finally, Welch describes how bulbs have enhanced his personal gardens and brought him and Wiesinger together in the common cause of heirloom gardening. Entertaining, informative, and loaded with beautiful photographs, The Bulb Hunter is sure to be a favorite of gardeners and plant lovers everywhere.
