Book excerpt: Since 1987 more than 300 buildings have been listed for their special architectural and historic interest. From humble prefabs to the colossal Park Hill, Sheffield, the range of listed buildings is staggering. This book lists all of them. Sir Albert Richardson's Bracken House, built for the Financial Times in 1955-59, was the first post-war building to be officially listed, when it was threatened with demolition. Listing led to its remodelling by Michael Hopkins in 1989-91, a demonstration of how the conservation process can inspire radical architectural interventions. Subsequent listings have been prompted by requests from the public when a building is threatened, or from detailed studies by building type. Buildings range from traditional works by Raymond Erith and Donald McMorran and many of the 'pop icons' of the 1960s such as Centre Point, to internationally outstanding modern works like Stirling and Gowans' Leicester Engineering Building and Foster Associates' offices for Willis Faber Dumas in Ipswich.

Book Local Heritage Listing

Download or read book Local Heritage Listing written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local lists play an essential role in building and reinforcing a sense of local character and distinctiveness in the historic environment, as part of the wider range of designation. They enable the significance of any building or site on the list (in its own right and as a contributor to the local planning authority's wider strategic planning objectives), to be better taken into account in planning applications affecting the building or site or its setting. The advice supports local authorities and communities to introduce a local list in their area or make changes to an existing list, through the preparation of selection criteria, thereby encouraging a more consistent approach to the identification and management of local heritage assets across England. A local list can celebrate the breadth of the historic environment of a local area by encompassing the full range of heritage assets that make up the historic environment and ensure the proper validation and recording of local heritage assets. They also provide a consistent and accountable way of identifying local heritage assets, to the benefit of owners and developers who need to understand local development opportunities and constraints.

Book Inclusive Design for Historic Buildings

Download or read book Inclusive Design for Historic Buildings written by David Bonnett and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic listed buildings continue to be enjoyed in the UK as places of work, education, entertainment, worship and more. However, in order to retain and enhance their value to society, they must function inclusively and provide easier access for disabled visitors. Inclusive Design for Historic Buildings explores how this challenging ambition can be reconciled with the long-standing objectives of building conservation. Experienced Access Consultant, David Bonnett, clearly sets out the qualifying elements for inclusivity and explores the architectural methods available, identifying five key typologies. Over twenty-five case studies are examined in depth, each illustrating a successful solution. Topics covered include the history of inclusive legislation; access auditing; working on-site and on-plan; consultation with disabled clients; creative problem-solving skills and, finally, social dynamics of the future.

Book Conservation of Historic Buildings

Download or read book Conservation of Historic Buildings written by Bernard Feilden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1982 Sir Bernard Feilden's Conservation of Historic Buildings has become the standard text for architects and others involved in the conservation of historic structures. Leading practitioners around the world have praised the book as being the most significant single volume on the subject to be published. This third edition revises and updates a classic book, including completely new sections on conservation of Modern Movement buildings and non-destructive investigation. The result of the lifetime's experience of one of the world's leading architectural conservators, the book comprehensively surveys the fundamental principles of conservation in their application to historic buildings, and provides the basic information needed by architects, engineers and surveyors for the solution of problems of architectural conservation in almost every climatic region of the world. This edition is organized into three complementary parts: in the first the structure of buildings is dealt with in detail; the second focuses attention on the causes of decay and the materials they affect; and the third considers the practical role of the architect involved in conservation and rehabilitation. As well as being essential reading for architects and others concerned with conservation, many lay people with various kinds of responsibility for historic buildings will find this clearly written, jargon-free work a fruitful source of guidance and information.
