Book excerpt: Building Systems Magazine (BSM) is an award winning United States-based trade magazine read by builders, developers and general contractors using or considering using innovative construction technologies. Once commonly known as "pre-fab," today's modern building systems employ innovative materials and techniques to create residential or commercial structures in a factory setting in a fraction of the time it takes to site build. BSM focuses mainly on log, timber frame, modular, panel, and structural insulated panel building technologies. Since factory fabrication and site preparation take place simultaneously, structures are finished and ready for occupancy in weeks, rather than months or years as required by conventional site-building schedules.

Book Introduction to Structural Analysis

Download or read book Introduction to Structural Analysis written by Debabrata Podder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Structural Analysis covers the principles of structural analysis without any requirement of prior knowledge of structures or equations. Beginning with basic principles of equilibrium of forces and moments, all other subsequent theories of structural analysis have been discussed logically. Divided into two major parts, this book discusses the basics of mechanics and principles of degrees of freedom upon which the entire paradigm rests, followed by analysis of determinate and indeterminate structures. The energy method of structural analysis is also included. Worked out examples are provided in each chapter to explain the concepts and solve real-life structural analysis problems along with a solutions manual. Aimed at undergraduate and senior undergraduate students in civil, structural, and construction engineering, this book: • Deals with the basic levels of structural analysis (i.e., types of structures and loads, materials and section properties up to the standard level, including analysis of determinate and indeterminate structures). • Focuses on generalized coordinate systems and Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics as an alternative method of studying the subject. • Introduces structural indeterminacy and degrees of freedom with many worked out examples. • Covers fundamentals of matrix theory of structural analysis. • Reviews energy principles and their relationship for calculating structural deflections. • Covers plastic analysis of structures.

Book Building Performance Analysis

Download or read book Building Performance Analysis written by Pieter de Wilde and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores and brings together the existent body of knowledge on building performance analysis Shortlisted in the CIBSE 2020 Building Performance Awards Building performance is an important yet surprisingly complex concept. This book presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of the subject. It provides a working definition of building performance, and an in-depth discussion of the role building performance plays throughout the building life cycle. The book also explores the perspectives of various stakeholders, the functions of buildings, performance requirements, performance quantification (both predicted and measured), criteria for success, and the challenges of using performance analysis in practice. Building Performance Analysis starts by introducing the subject of building performance: its key terms, definitions, history, and challenges. It then develops a theoretical foundation for the subject, explores the complexity of performance assessment, and the way that performance analysis impacts on actual buildings. In doing so, it attempts to answer the following questions: What is building performance? How can building performance be measured and analyzed? How does the analysis of building performance guide the improvement of buildings? And what can the building domain learn from the way performance is handled in other disciplines? Assembles the current body of knowledge on building performance analysis in one unique resource Offers deep insights into the complexity of using building performance analysis throughout the entire building life cycle, including design, operation and management Contributes an emergent theory of building performance and its analysis Building Performance Analysis will appeal to the building science community, both from industry and academia. It specifically targets advanced students in architectural engineering, building services design, building performance simulation and similar fields who hold an interest in ensuring that buildings meet the needs of their stakeholders.

Book Japanese Construction

Download or read book Japanese Construction written by S.M. Levy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1970s and 1980s have been marked by turbulent times for certain portions of America's industrial base, as their dominance of many do mestic and foreign markets has eroded. During such times of stress it is tempting to create scapegoats in order to rationalize shortcomings. Much is heard about the Japanese in this regard. How they have contributed to the deterioration of specific segments of American indus try, how jobs in the U. S. are being lost to foreign competition, and how the resulting trade deficit will be the downfall of us all. Much of this rhetoric has been directed against the Japanese automobile manu facturers and the Japanese electronic industry, which has been accused of "dumping" product into the United States. It was not until Japan unveiled its plan to build the multi-billion dollar Kansai Airport project that Japanese restrictive bidding practices in their domestic construction market became headline news. Construc tion then became a popular subject for "Japan Bashing" and attention was focused on the activities of Japanese contractors around the world, and, more particularly, on their involvement in the U. S. construction market. Well, the Japanese construction companies are in the United States and have been for some time. They have been awarded many contracts for federal and municipal construction projects and they have negotiated a significant number of construction contracts in the private sector.
