Download or read book Unions Renewed written by Alice Martin and published by Polity. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade unions are in crisis. Decades of decline and retrenchment are being compounded by a global elite who are increasingly extracting profit through exploitative financial engineering, in ways that side-step labour and undermine the power of organised workers. Do these trends spell the end for unions, or signal the need for a rapid renewal? Alice Martin and Annie Quick argue that the role of unions is more essential than ever in the 21st century - but only if they change. Automation and a rapid green industrial revolution present a once in a generation opportunity for unions to take a leading role in building a new, more equitable economy. However, renewal will require radical thinking. Unions must reset their ambitions beyond the traditional aims of wage bargaining to include resisting profit extraction through interest on personal debts and soaring property rents. From worker ownership to organising strikes outside of the workplace, they must stake out a different path - or accept a diminishing role. No-one committed to building a new economy can afford to miss this urgent, highly original book and its radical vision for a new trade unionism.

Download or read book Canada s Unions written by Robert Laxer and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a picture of Canada's labour movement in the mid-seventies--its structure, its leaders, and aims. Two parallel themes run through Canada's Unions: the surge in labour militancy led by teachers, hospital workers, federal government workers and other public employees in response to the pressure of rising inflation; and the rise of nationalism and the increasing independence of the Canadian union movement during the 1970s. Canada's Union offers an unparalleled, immediate portrait of the state of the Canadian labour movement during a crucial decade of its existence.

Download or read book Trade Unions and the Betrayal of the Unemployed written by Immanuel Ness and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the problematic relationship between unions and the unemployed in New York City during the 1990's. Historically, trade unions in the U.S. have had an interest in the political mobilization of the jobless to expand unemployment insurance and lessen the threat of lower wages, reduced union density, and weaker bargaining positions for unions. Despite these advantages, trade unions have rarely organized the unemployed, because they represent a potential threat to the organizational control, leadership, and legitimacy of the trade unions themselves. Moreover, the interests of the unemployed conflict directly with those of the securely employed trade unionist. The study identifies union responses to unemployment at local and regional levels and the responses of independent activist organizations. The research suggests that hiring hall unions produce exclusive organizing strategies that have deeper accountability to their members, but with organizing objectives that serve only the narrow interests of core members. By contrast, workplace-based unions typically engender class-oriented unions with narrow accountability to members, but with organizing objectives that extend beyond their immediate members.

Download or read book Estimating Building Costs written by Calin M. Popescu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-04-22 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies live or die on the basis of estimating their costs. Preparing estimates and bidding for new jobs is a complex and often costly process. There is no substitute for on the job training -- until now. Drawing on the authors' combined experience of more than 70 years, Estimating Building Costs presents state-of-the-art principles, practices, and techniques for assessing these expenditures that can be applied regardless of changes in the costs of materials, equipment, and labor. The book is an efficient and practical tool for developing contracts or controlling project costs. The authors cover the major components of the direct cost: estimating procedures and cost trends related to materials, construction equipment, and skilled and unskilled labor. They describe various types of building estimates encountered during the lifecycle of a project, as well as the role and accuracy of each. The book provides an overview of the industry, cost indexes in use, approaches to preparing a detailed estimate, and an in-depth description of the organization and function of the estimating group. Including CSI Master Format and UniFormat codes, estimating forms, a list of available estimating software packages, a detailed construction site and investigation report, the book provides a cost estimating methodology that readers can tailor to their own organizational needs.
