Book An Architecture of Parts Architects Building Workers and Industrialisation in Britain 1940 1970

Download or read book An Architecture of Parts Architects Building Workers and Industrialisation in Britain 1940 1970 written by Christine Wall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique in describing the history of post war reconstruction from an entirely new perspective by focusing on the changing relationship between architects and building workers. It considers individual, as well as collective, interactions with technical change and in doing so brings together, for the first time, an extraordinary range of sources including technical archives, oral history and visual material to describe the construction process both during and in the decades after the war. It focuses on the social aspects of production and the changes in working life for architects and building workers with increasing industrialization, in particular analysing the effect on the building process of introducing dimensionally co-ordinated components. Both architects and building workers have been accused of creating a built environment now popularly discredited: architects responsible for poor design and building workers for poor workmanship. However, many of the structures and ideas underpinning this period of rapid change were revolutionary in their commitment to a complete transformation of the building process. An Architecture of Parts adds to the growing literature on changes in the building world during and immediately after the Second World War. It is significant, both empirically and historically, in its examination of the ideas, technology and relationships that fired industrialization of the building process in mid-century Britain.

Book System Building and Aesthetics

Download or read book System Building and Aesthetics written by Razak Basri and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-08-03 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, course: BSc. in Architecture, language: English, abstract: The case for System Building Method and aesthetics is often compelling. Building owners are often dissatisfied with their high construction costs and the architects often feel constrained to limit their talent and creativity when confronted with the necessity of adopting System Building Method. The design of systemised construction buildings need not lead to a monotonous form of architecture. Many of the finest such buildings in Britain are constructed with a high degree of aesthetic value. The design of a systemised building system should also aim to achieve aesthetic value and user satisfaction along with economy of materials, production methods and erection techniques.

Industrialized open building has the potential to radically cut building costs and construction time. This book focuses on product and production systematics and information systematics, and begins with an extensive survey of the field by the editor. The second part consists of a series of descriptions of the experience of different countries, and chapters on particular themes. The book presents new material developed from Commission W24 of the CIB (the International Council for Building Research Studies and Documentation).

Book The Architecture of Industry

Download or read book The Architecture of Industry written by Dr Mathew Aitchison and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-12-28 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Rust Belt to Silicon Valley, the intersection between architecture and industry has provided a rich and evolving source for historians of architecture. In a historical context, industrial architecture evokes the smoking factories of the nineteenth century or Fordist production complexes of the twentieth century. This book documents the changing nature of industrial building and planning from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Drawing on research from the United States, Europe and Australia, this collection of essays highlights key moments in industrial architecture and planning representative of the wider paradigms in the field. Areas of analysis include industrial production, factories, hydroelectricity, aerospace, logistics, finance, scientific research and mining. The selected case studies serve to highlight architectural and planning innovations in industry and their contributions to wider cultural and societal currents. This richly illustrated collection will be of interest for a wide range of built environment studies, incorporating findings from both historical and theoretical scholarship and design research.
