Book The Impacts of Automotive Plant Closure

Download or read book The Impacts of Automotive Plant Closure written by Andrew Beer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic restructuring has been a notable feature of so-called mature industrial economies such as the UK and Australia in the last two decades, with deregulation, privatisation, technological change and globalisation combining to reshape such economies. Some industries have grown, while others have declined. Moreover, while overall employment in the UK and Australia has grown, many newly-created positions require skills not found in the industries shedding labour, or are in casualised and low paid occupations. Many lesser-skilled workers leaving declining industries are therefore at risk of long-term unemployment or leaving the workforce entirely. Both mental and physical health can be affected after redundancy. It is therefore crucial that the measures put in place in many domains of social policy (such as formal health policy, employment assistance, community development, housing assistance and so on) to adequately address the difficulties confronting this group. This volume takes a closer look at the impact of manufacturing - notably automotive - plant closures in the UK (Birmingham) and Australia (Adelaide) in recent years and policy responses to those closures. It attempts to tease out differences in policy response and effectiveness, and attempts to identify areas where policy could be made to work better in terms of adjusting to large scale manufacturing change and resulting job losses. In so doing, it begins, for the first time we believe, to take a comparative approach to understanding the impact of plant closures and policy responses. This book was published as a special issue of Policy Studies.

Book Pathways through Crisis

Download or read book Pathways through Crisis written by Carl A. Maida and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When densely populated urban areas face severe crises—natural disasters, epidemics, sudden unemployment, massive immigration—they often find that established mechanisms cannot respond adequately to the problems. Carl Maida argues that solutions to these problems tend to be developed within the affected communities themselves. In Pathways through Crisis, he draws on his two decades of work in ethnography and with crisis centers in the Los Angeles area to study the kinds of informal organizations that arise at the grass-roots level in order to deal with severe crises. This ground-breaking examination of responses to urban disaster suggests how both informal and formal organizations can be developed to serve people under extreme duress.

Book Higher Expectations

Download or read book Higher Expectations written by Roberta Hawkins and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Expectations is a practical guide to navigating academia for people who want to improve their own day-to-day work lives and create better conditions for everyone. Universities are broken: they’re built on systems that are discriminatory, hierarchical, and individualistic. This hurts the people that work and learn in them and limits the potential for universities to contribute to a better world. But we can raise our expectations. Hawkins and Kern envision a university transformed by collaboration, care, equity, justice, and multiple knowledges. Drawing on real-world, international examples where people and institutions are already doing things in new ways, Higher Expectations offers concrete advice on how to make these transformations real. It covers many areas of academic life including course design, conferencing, administration, research teams, managing workloads and more. Designed for faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other scholars, Higher Expectations delivers hope and practical actions you can take to start making change now. It is a must-have for everyone working in academia today.

Book Plant Closings

Download or read book Plant Closings written by Lawrence Rothstein and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1986-03-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the drastic assault on U.S. workers' economic well-being represented by plant closings not spurred them to greater political and trade union militancy? The answers lie in the myths and power structure of our society's legal and business institutions. By comparing worker experiences in Youngstown, Ohio, where plant closings and layoffs are not regulated, and Longwy, France, where legislation had been enacted, Rothstein gauges the markedly different effects.
