This concise text explores the spread of settler colonies within the British Empire over the course of the nineteenth century, specifically those in New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and Australia. In Building Better Britains?, Cecilia Morgan examines how imperial powers reshaped the lives and landscapes of millions through colonial relationships with Indigenous peoples, and the processes of migration and settlement that facilitated the British Empire’s global expansion. Identity and culture in geographically diverse settler societies are compared, highlighting shared histories and the nuances that differentiated them. Morgan encourages readers to consider settler societies from multiple perspectives, including those of the colonists themselves. Eight maps and eight illustrations enhance the text, along with a bibliography and index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989 we visited Australia, where we taught American Literature at the University of Newcastle on a Fulbright Grant. We read Australian literature, and were very much impressed by Australian writers and the picture they gave of their country. We traveled within the country from the coast to the Outback, saw koalas and kangaroos and wombats in the wlld, fossicked for gold, and flew to China, where we also lectured and visited the Summer Palace and the Great Wall during a time of great stress within that country. A later return to Australia showed a country much changed from the one we had first seen, but still a wonderful place.

Separate chapters focus on the planning, briefing and construction process; security, safety and sustainability; key characteristics of successful buildings; identity, decor and signage; and interior layout and facilities. The text draws together a vast resource of real library examples from all over the world which provide best practice models and lessons to learn. Book Built Unbuilt and Imagined Sydney

Download or read book Built Unbuilt and Imagined Sydney written by Anuradha Chatterjee and published by Copal Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built, Unbuilt, and Imagined Sydney presents the expanded field of architecture. It aims to show that the practice of architecture exceeds the work legally defensible under the title of the architect. Besides the design and construction of buildings, the disciplinary field of architecture consists of exhibition and display; discussions and lectures; competitions and visions of new public domains; interactions between art and architecture in the form of installations, performances, and public art; and ideas on new directions for the practice of architecture. The book, therefore, places emphasis on practice as an intellectual activity, in addition to the definition of the term informed by business and legal parameters. It is seen as the meaningful exercise of social, political, and critical knowledge, skills, and mindset in an urban, spatial, and tectonic condition. The practice is also a public act, mediated, legitimated, and made meaningful through its articulation in various institutional, public, and mediatic realms. The book focuses on built and unbuilt works (residential, commercial, interiors, and so on) in Sydney, inclusive of public art, object or furniture design, key invited or public lectures, studios, current projects in making, competitions, collaborations, exhibitions, installations, and outreach work. The focus is on the innovative and the original¾not the ordinary or the purely commercial.
