Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas, are a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago consists of over 700 islands, with the two largest being East Falkland and West Falkland. The Falkland Islands has a population of approximately 3,500 people, with most residents living in the capital city of Stanley. English is the official language and the currency is the Falkland Islands pound. The Falkland Islands have a rich history dating back to the 16th century when the Spanish and British both claimed ownership of the islands. In 1833, the British established a permanent settlement and the islands were officially declared a British colony in 1841. In 1982, a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom broke out over the ownership of the islands, resulting in a 74-day war that claimed the lives of over 900 people. The islands remain a point of political tension between the two countries, with Argentina continuing to claim sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Despite this, the Falkland Islands have become a popular tourist destination known for their unique wildlife, rugged landscapes, and British culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to island sustainability with a focus on the small island economies in the Pacific, especially islands of Okinawa located at the southwestern edge of Japan. It examines socio-economic characteristics, development issues, policies, networking of island societies, and the roles of culture, human resources, agriculture and tourism in a globalizing world. PALM adopted “the Okinawa Initiative on Regional Development Strategies for a More Prosperous and Safer Pacific.” This initiative emphasized the important role of Okinawa in spearheading and coordinating development and educational relationships among the Pacific islands. Although the focus is on Okinawa, analytical methods and visions presented in this book will provide food for thought for many similar island societies which have been struggling to achieve toward sustainable development. Since the International Small Island Studies Association (ISISA) held its first meeting on Island of Okinawa, Nissology has been emerging as an important area of scientific investigation. The book is intended to appeal to students, academic researchers, policy makers and industry professionals and practitioners.

Book Lessons From the Political Economy of Small Islands

Download or read book Lessons From the Political Economy of Small Islands written by NA NA and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small islands often enjoy a distinct juridical personality. Many, whether fully sovereign or not, successfully deploy this "gift of jurisdiction" to economic advantage, offsetting the potentially adverse effects of smallness, isolation and peripherality. These legal powers, reflected in supportive policy and culture, are themselves key economic resources in a development strategy. Globalization can be richly asymmetrical, offering lucrative opportunities for differentiation and nice strategies for small island jurisdictions. This book documents such lessons from a most unlikely group of North Atlantic Islands.
