Book Building the Inclusive City

Download or read book Building the Inclusive City written by Victor Santiago Pineda and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book is an anthropological urban study of the Emirate of Dubai, its institutions, and their evolution. It provides a contemporary history of disability in city planning from a non-Western perspective and explores the cultural context for its positioning. Three insights inform the author’s approach. First, disability research, much like other urban or social issues, must be situated in a particular place. Second, access and inclusion forms a key part of both local and global planning issues. Third, a 21st century planning education should take access and inclusion into consideration by applying a disability lens to the empirical, methodological, and theoretical advances of the field. By bridging theory and practice, this book provides new insights on inclusive city planning and comparative urban theory. This book should be read as part of a larger struggle to define and assert access; it’s a story of how equity and justice are central themes in building the cities of the future and of today.

Book Building Inclusive Cities

Download or read book Building Inclusive Cities written by Carolyn Whitzman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on a growing movement within developing countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific, as well as Europe and North America, this book documents cutting edge practice and builds theory around a rights based approach to women's safety in the context of poverty reduction and social inclusion. Drawing upon two decades of research and grassroots action on safer cities for women and everyone, this book is about the right to an inclusive city. The first part of the book describes the challenges that women face regarding access to essential services, housing security, liveability and mobility. The second part of the book critically examines programs, projects and ideas that are working to make cities safer. Building Inclusive Cities takes a cross-cultural learning perspective from action research occurring throughout the world and translates this research into theoretical conceptualizations to inform the literature on planning and urban management in both developing and developed countries. This book is intended to inspire both thought and action.

Book Building Inclusive Communities through Education and Learning

Download or read book Building Inclusive Communities through Education and Learning written by Klara Skubic Ermenc and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the complex relationships among learning, education and the community. It examines the significance of the community for the individual’s development and the potential that learning and education have for the development of the community. The volume gathers together the findings of a number of quantitative and qualitative studies conducted on different samples, theoretical discussions set in comparative international contexts. Although the studies employ Slovenian samples and analyse situations in this country, the contributions address issues that are of concern to the global research community. Moreover, they respond to international debates and engage in the dialogue between the local/partial and the global/universal. The book is unique in its embeddedness in the intellectual continental European tradition that has been characterised by the failed historical experience of attempting collective unity through the community understood as a common identity in former Yugoslavia.

Book Inclusion and Local Community Building in the Context of European Social Policy and International Human Social Right

Download or read book Inclusion and Local Community Building in the Context of European Social Policy and International Human Social Right written by Frank Schulz-Nieswandt and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a radical alternative to the cultural reality of social exclusion of the Homo patiens, inclusion is an anthropological paradigm of the philosophy of law which leads to the idea of humans going beyond social structures of centre and periphery in society. As a model of thought, inclusion is driven by the United Nations and also by the catalogue of basic social rights involved in the treaties of the European Union. We cannot understand inclusion in the same way as switching on and off a light. Beyond legal frameworks and economic incentives as important preconditions for generating social change through Pareto-optimal solutions in allocation, successful inclusion is a process of social change understood as a type of cultural transformation. As a form of metamorphosis (gestalt switch) of the collective agreement about the question of a good life, inclusion needs time, but during this time-span society has to organize social learning processes that transform the psychodynamics of individuals and the cultural grammar of exclusion.

Download or read book Combating Poverty in Europe written by Rune Halvorsen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering methods to combat poverty and social exclusion has now become a major political challenge in Europe. Combating Poverty in Europe offers an original and timely analysis of how this challenge is met by actors at European, national and subnational levels. Building on a European study comparing Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the UK, this book provides new insights into the processes and mechanisms that promote or hinder interaction between the increasingly multi-layered European system for responding to poverty and social exclusion in EU member states. The contributors present systematic and comparative analyses of social policy design, institutional frameworks and delivery practices from a multi-level governance perspective. Original and diverse, this book will appeal to researchers and scholars in comparative social policy, as well as policy officials in the EU, national government and anti-poverty NGOs.

Book EU Enlargement Region Building and Shifting Borders of Inclusion and Exclusion

Download or read book EU Enlargement Region Building and Shifting Borders of Inclusion and Exclusion written by Professor James W. Scott and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2004 entry of 10 Central and Eastern European countries, along with Malta and Cyprus, into the EU has caused a huge shift in the EU's external boundaries. The socio-economic and political transformations that this shift has caused not only suggest new regional development opportunities, but also many potential problems and tensions. While the EU insists that enlargement will not signify 'new divisions', processes of inclusion and exclusion and the imposition of visa restrictions on non-EU citizens could pose obstacles to co-operation, conjuring fears of an emerging 'fortress Europe' that effectively divides the continent. Illustrated with case studies from Central and Eastern European border areas, this book examines capacities for region building across national borders in within the context of EU enlargement, synthesizing the various insights provided by local information and suggesting ways forward for the future development of the EU's 'Wider Europe' strategy.
