The presentation focuses on drawing as an approach to and phase of architectural design. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but exploration. The first part of the book discusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a compliment to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of “façade” are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how façades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between "traditional vs. digital" gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and natural world through freehand drawing. The author, Eric Jenkins has received several teaching awards and design awards. He is Associate Professor at Catholic University of America's School of Architecture and Planning where he teaches design, theory and analytical sketching. She asserts that the experience of resisting suffering, especially oppressive social suffering, must be brought from the fringe to the very center of ethics. Book excerpt: The dominant economic explanations of the 20th century are not comprehensive enough to describe the complexity of economy and society and their reliance on the biosphere. Intangible Flow Theory in Economics: Human Participation in Economic and Societal Production outlines a new theory that challenges both economics and the relativism conveyed in social constructivism, poststructuralism and postmodernism. To mainstream economics and Marxism, monetary flows transform us humans into commodities. To this new theory, flows of economic elements as physical goods or money are consummated by intangible flows that cannot yet be precisely appraised at an actual or approximate value, for instance, workflows, service flows, information flows or communicational flows. The theory suggests a systematic alternative to refute the human commodity framework and interrelated conjectures (e.g. human capital, human resources, human assets). Furthermore, it exhibits that economic and societal production is fully integrated on the biosphere. Conversely, contemporary relativism argues for the end of theory development, suspension of evidence and entrenchment of knowledge validity among local systems (named as paradigms, epistemes, research programs, truth regimes or other terms). Thus, relativism tacitly supports dominant theories as the human commodity framework because it preventively sabotages the creation of new theoretical explanations. Disputing relativist theses, intangible flow theory demonstrates that innovative theoretical explanations remain possible. This book is of significant interest to students and scholars of political economy, economic sociology, organization, economics and social theory.

At this point in human history, it would have to be underwritten by an ethical universalism that is pluralistic, historically enlightened and non-ethnocentric. In addition, it would take seriously the consequences of complexity in a world that is increasingly interconnected and interdependent, yet still so far apart, and would be prepared to draw the full implications of the embodied and situated cognition paradigm shift which has taken place in the past few decades. It would, furthermore, take aim at the bullshit, in all of its manifestations, that is so pervasive in various quarters throughout the whole of culture and society. Finally, it would effectively contribute to the articulation and elaboration of the kinds of concepts, frameworks, narratives and practices, generally speaking, which could somehow enable humans to rise to the next level in their understanding of the globalizing and glocalizing world in which they live, and which is, as is common knowledge, dramatically confronted by a number of serious challenges, grave risks and threats, dismal shortcomings and failures. This work offers compelling analyses and diagnostics, and makes some sketch-proposals to urgently grapple with them.
