Book Building a New Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Building a New Empire Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel M. Ayers and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building a New Empire The story of "Building a New Empire" is not a story conceived in the vivid imagination of the author, or wrought from the wild scenes of the growing West in fiction or by inspiration, but a story of actual experience in making a new West, and the memory of the events of those trying times has led up to writing this manuscript. In general conversation these events have been related many times, and editors have asked for historical events to be written for publication, and the writer has been urged to put these actual facts in book form, so the conditions existing in the early days in the settlement of the "New Empire" might be known to the younger generations coming on to occupy the country so recently wrested from the wild man of the plains. The writer had expected to receive assistance from the few old settlers still living, and who had witnessed the meteoric changes in the West in the past thirty-five or forty years, but none could be found that could give additional facts or evidence of value. Many who passed through the wild scenes of the West could not be located, and those that could be found could give but very few reliable facts of value to add to the circumstances related, so the memory of one man is largely in evidence in writing a historical sketch of the last "new West." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Empire Similarly the French, in emergency, have always resorted to massacre to overcome obstruction, from the crusades against the Albigenses in the thirteenth century to the Commune of Paris in the nineteenth. It was not only Saint Bartholomew, and the persecu tions which followed the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which brought about the Terror of I 793; it was rather a thousand nameless butcheries like those which occurred during the reign of Louis XIV. The incapacity of the French to ameliorate their fiscal system generated an unequal taxation which pro voked revolt, and revolt caused repression frightful in ferocity. At Rennes in 167 5, as a punishment for insubordination, the town was given up to pillage, and la Rue Haute, the main street, was destroyed. The inhabitants, Old men, women, and children, were driven forth into the fields without a refuge, with out food, and without a place to sleep. They perished from exposure and want. They do not constitute a connected history; indeed, it is doubtful if such a history has any place Whatever in juvenile literature. The things told, however, are events with which both young and old are expected to be familiar. In the preparation of the book I am indebted for information to the late Dr. Isaac Stout, of the Department of Public Instruction, and to Principal B. E. Hicks, of Painted Post. To my wife, Lilian Burnham Redway, I owe much for faithful and painstaking help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nationalizing Empires

Download or read book Nationalizing Empires written by Stefan Berger and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Nationalizing Empires challenge the dichotomy between empire and nation state that for decades has dominated historiography. The authors center their attention on nation-building in the imperial core and maintain that the nineteenth century, rather than the age of nation-states, was the age of empires and nationalism. They identify a number of instances where nation building projects in the imperial metropolis aimed at the preservation and extension of empires rather than at their dissolution or the transformation of entire empires into nation states. Such observations have until recently largely escaped theoretical reflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governance of Empire The object of presenting this work to the public is twofold. Firstly, as a colonial, my desire is to present a colonial view of the imperial idea, and, secondly, to endeavour to arouse among my countrymen, in the United Kingdom especially, a greater interest and pride in the Empire beyond the seas. My critics may point to the number of able works bearing directly or indirectly upon the British Empire which have been published within recent years, and it may even be said that I am repeating an oft-told tale, that many of the suggestions which I now put forward, with all due deference to these self-same critics, have been made before. My reply is, The thing that hath been, is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun (eccles. I. Book The Rise of the Empire Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of the Empire What is it that has awaked the British peoples from their dreamy isolation? Fast steamers, telegraph cables, cheap postage, popular educa tion: these have helped us to see and hear more of each other, and to realize how near we are even to the uttermost parts of the earth.. And we are being driven as well as drawn together. As we read the extraordinary charges fabricated against us by certain writers in the French, German and Russian press, charges that are not only read but believed by many in the land of their invention, we realize that dangerous things are sometimes done by deluded people. Instinctively we gather closer together, back to back and shoulder to shoulder, ready for an onslaught which sanity would forbid. Book The Northward Course of Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Northward Course of Empire Classic Reprint written by Vilhjalmur Stefansson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northward Course of Empire The idea of this book is doubtless old, though it came to me only about 1912. Perhaps it was old to the Medes and Persians. It may even have been an ancient revamping of it that led Solomon to remark that there is nothing new under the sun. In another sense the idea is so new that the history of it can be given briefly. The winter of 1918-1919 representatives of chambers of commerce of various European countries were touring the United States. A dinner was given them in New York and at this I was called upon to make a five-minute talk. One of the sponsors of the dinner was Dr. Albert Shaw, the editor of the Review of Reviews. He said to me that the idea of my talk was new. When I reminded him of Solomon's well-known saying, he replied that at any rate it was new enough to make a suitable article for his magazine. He asked me to write the article and I said I would. Ideas, like many other things, have a tendency to expand, and in the writing my theme grew beyond the limits of the Review of Reviews, for they seldom print an article of more than twenty-five hundred words and I found I had ten thousand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Empire, 1801-1900, Vol. 2 of 3 The House of Commons had affirmed by large majorities that its authority was derived from a corrupt source and that it was in no true sense representative of the people. The Reform Act had swept away its foundation, substituting a broader one whereon to build a new chamber of a genuine character. Nevertheless, time must be had to prepare the new registers, and there were urgent matters that would brook no delay in settlement.
