Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is at a pivotal crossroads. The soul of our nation is at stake and in peril. A new public narrative is needed to unite Americans around common values and to counter the increasing discord and acrimony in our politics and culture. The process of healing and creating a more perfect union in our nation must start now. The moral vision of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Beloved Community, which animated and galvanized the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, provides a hopeful way forward. In A More Perfect Union, Adam Russell Taylor, president of Sojourners, reimagines a contemporary version of the Beloved Community that will inspire and unite Americans across generations, geographic and class divides, racial and gender differences, faith traditions, and ideological leanings. In the Beloved Community, neither privilege nor punishment is tied to race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or economic status, and everyone is able to realize their full potential and thrive. Building the Beloved Community requires living out a series of commitments, such as true equality, radical welcome, transformational interdependence, E Pluribus Unum ("out of many, one"), environmental stewardship, nonviolence, and economic equity. By building the Beloved Community we unify the country around a shared moral vision that transcends ideology and partisanship, tapping into our most sacred civic and religious values, enabling our nation to live up to its best ideals and realize a more perfect union.

Book excerpt: Editor's View Why Africa suffers from a highly dependent independence There is absolutely nothing to lose when things are done right and nations and their rulers make the best decisions for the collective and for their own good. Perhaps that is the main difference between developed countries and those countries that still suffer from the mental, political and economic underdevelopment that prevents them from fully developing and growing. The colonial and exploitative history of the African continent as well as other regions of the world should not serve eternally as a historical reference of what is and will continue to be the relations between the most powerful nations and those that aspire to be greater nations as well. The power of nations is in essence an extension of the power of their rulers, and the power of rulers derives equally from the political, economic, and technological independence of nations. Book Bygone Utopias and Farm Protest in the Rural Midwest

Download or read book Bygone Utopias and Farm Protest in the Rural Midwest written by Daniel Jaster and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores those who long for “bygone utopias,” times before rapid, culturally destructive social change stripped individuals of their perceived agency. The case of the wave of foreclosure protests that swept through the rural American Midwest during the 1930s illustrates these themes. These actions embodied a utopian understanding of agrarian society that had largely disappeared by the late 19th century: hundreds to thousands of people fixed public auctions of foreclosed farms, returning owners’ property and giving them a second chance to save their farm. Comparisons to later movements, including the National Farmers’ Organization and the protests surrounding the 1980s Farm Crisis highlight the importance of culturally catastrophic social change occurring at a breakneck pace in fomenting these types of bygone utopian actions. These activists and movements should cause scholars to re-think what it means to be conservative and how we view conservatism, helping us better understand why we’re seeing a contemporary resurgence in nationalist and reactionary movements across the globe.

Book In Search of a Perfect World

Download or read book In Search of a Perfect World written by Michael C. Sullivan and published by Perfect World. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Search of a Perfect World" examines the basic questions of human life on Earth: Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? And where are we going? In attempting to answer these questions, humans have formed religious, social and political groups and launched wars to remove impediments to their visions of a more-perfect world. Intentional or utopian communities have been similarly inspired. Throughout the world, many cultures have maintained a belief that the world was once a better, more harmonious place and and will be again, after some form of cataclysm and the arrival of a savior or redeemer. This phenomenon, in some societies, is known as millennialism.

Book The Peacekeeping Economy

Download or read book The Peacekeeping Economy written by Lloyd J. Dumas and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that military strength is virtually synonymous with security is deeply entrenched and widely held. But while the threat or use of military force may sometimes be necessary, it cannot keep us as safe as we would be by building relationships that replace hostility with a sense of mutual purpose and mutual gain. Economic relationships, says Lloyd J. Dumas, can offer a far more effective, and far less costly, means of maintaining security. After defining the right kind of economic relationship--one that is balanced and nonexploitative, emphasizes development, and minimizes environmental damage--Dumas then addresses some practical concerns in establishing and maintaining these relationships. He also considers the practical problems of the transition from military-based security arrangements to "economic peacekeeping," and the effects of demilitarized security on economic development and prosperity.

Book Mission Matters

Download or read book Mission Matters written by Gail Anderson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mission Matters sheds a fresh light on how to envision relevant and impactful museums. Anderson takes the understanding of mission relevance to a new level. The premise of the book reflects external contemporary realities and the need for museums to better position themselves as leaders and change agents in the greater landscape and diversity of people.. Anderson illustrates her points with numerous examples from the US and around the world. Features include essays by David Fleming from the UK who tackles the importance of mission and social issues, and Charmaine Jefferson who frames the complexities of cultural competence in the 21st century. Twenty museum leaders each share their institution’s story of transformative change informed by reframing their mission. Anderson’s methodology for the book, the Mission Alignment Framework, helps reference the thinking about missions and the subsequent changes within museums as they redirect their work. Eighty US and international mission statements reveal the range of museums disciplines and demographics from urban and rural , and styles of mission all illustrating relevance to their unique settings, institutional capacity, resources, and purpose. Complementing these examples are guidelines about how to rethink mission, a questioning strategy based on the Mission Alignment Framework, and, a range of useful tools from museums and leading thinkers in the field. Mission Matters is useful to a wide range of readers and users from trustees to directors to staff from a wide range of museums regardless of size and stage of development and maturity. The book is an easily accessible reference for strategic planning, conversations about relevance and missions, and museums considering the reinvention of their museum for greater impact.
