Book Women Persisting in the Engineering Profession

Download or read book Women Persisting in the Engineering Profession written by Kathleen Relihan Buse and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women remain underrepresented in the engineering profession comprising only 10% of the employed engineers in 2010 while in that same year women exceeded more than half of those employed in professional, managerial and related occupations according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. While others studies have identified the reasons women leave engineering, this study focuses on women who persist in the profession. A complex, three stage mixed methods study has been conducted. The first stage was a qualitative research study based on semi-structured interviews with 31 women engineers, ten of whom had left an engineering career and 21 persisting for on average 21 years leading to a conceptual model and the development of a new construct to measure the ideal self. Next, a field experiment was conducted which surveyed 495 women ages 21 to 70 with engineering degrees. A structural equation model has been developed showing that women{u2019}s commitment to an engineering career is impacted by their levels of self efficacy, the interaction of age and number of children, and their ability to articulate a personal vision as operationalized by the ideal self. A woman{u2019}s relationship with her manager and level of work engagement also impact career commitment. The final stage of this research compared the factors and relationships important to a woman{u2019}s career commitment to engineering to a sample of 138 male engineers. Findings show that the factors important to persistence for women engineers have little or no impact on a man{u2019}s commitment to an engineering career. Women engineers have lower levels of self efficacy than men, and for men self efficacy has no statistically significant relationship to career commitment to engineering. Further both the relationship with the manager, one{u2019}s ideal self, and work engagement influence a woman{u2019}s career commitment to engineering more than for a man. A conceptual model adapted from the intentional change theory (Boyatzis, 2008) is presented that integrates the findings from each of the studies to explain women{u2019}s persistence in an engineering career. The model describes a woman{u2019}s persistence in engineering as a complex system where a recursive relationship exists between the dynamic of the ideal self and the real self or between one{u2019}s dreams and one{u2019}s reality. The discontinuities involved with adapting and learning within an engineering career, the supporting nature of one{u2019}s relationships and the multiple levels of individual, family, organizational and occupational are shown as impacting career persistence. The findings from this study can be used by both practitioners and scholars to design systems that that will enable sustainable careers for women in the engineering profession.

Book Understanding Career Persistence of Women in Engineering in Manitoba

Download or read book Understanding Career Persistence of Women in Engineering in Manitoba written by Kathryn Atamanchuk and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are underrepresented in the Canadian engineering profession at a rate of nearly 10:1 when compared to their male counterparts. This poses a problem for a profession whose goal is to provide innovative and inclusive solutions for all people. In Manitoba, while women are underrepresented in engineering at the same rate as the national average, there is also evidence that some either never enter the profession after graduation or leave at various stages in their career. This qualitative research study examined the experiences of two groups of women in Manitoba, Former Practicing Members and Graduates Never Registered, to understand the factors that both enable and deter their persistence in the engineering profession. Focus group sessions and one-on-one interviews provided an in-depth perspective of factors contributing to women's career decisions. The findings generally align with the literature-based conceptual framework and indicate that this is a multi-dimensional problem that includes factors such as a need for improved work-life balance, workplace cultural shifts, and confidence building. Implications of these finding include a need to support both new graduates in the licensure process and former members who wish to return to practice.

Book Building The Life of A Woman Engineer

Download or read book Building The Life of A Woman Engineer written by Katherine Kehres and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While engineering may typically be regarded as a more male-dominated industry, women can absolutely find success within the vastly technical, seemingly scientific, and often-contractual profession. Katherine Kehres is just one example of a wife, a mother, and an engineer who maintains overwhelming satisfaction for the life she has constructed. Her persistence can be credited for navigating what others might find intimidating, and she sometimes considers frustrating. Crafted with an aim to change the perceptions and misconceptions, Building the Life of a Woman Engineer is mostly a memoir, maybe a self-help, and hopefully an inspiration. A key purpose of its design is in bringing awareness to and acceptability for engineering, both as an educational pursuit and as a career field, for girls to strive toward and women to thrive in. Katherine details her growth, resilience, and dedication over the years, despite originally assuming that engineering was only for men, dads, and nerds! She accentuates how the occupation actually encompasses traits and values beyond the baseline affinity for math and science. And the insight and lessons provided function as guidance for those pondering whether they or a friend or a family member could also find engineering interesting and incredibly rewarding. No matter where anyone is within their own individual and unique journey, the reflections on personal and professional experiences are anticipated to help everyone be less naïve and more knowledgeable. Concurrently, big picture ideas serve as reassurance that all are in control of building their own life project, even when it is paved with challenges and obstacles. So whether you have a desire to one day find your own niche, you already hold a critical role, or you are simply a champion for the importance and essentiality of engineers, your encouragement and camaraderie are welcomed in the engineering community!

Book Impact of Social Supports on Persistent Women Engineers Perspectives from the United States and India

Download or read book Impact of Social Supports on Persistent Women Engineers Perspectives from the United States and India written by Joan Leslie Ferrell and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lower representation of women in the engineering and computer science workforce is a global problem. In the United States, women in engineering drop out at a rate higher than their male counterparts. The male/female ratio in the engineering workforce has remained stagnant despite growing percentages of graduates. Women dropout due to familial responsibilities and they leave to take positions in other industries. In India, women are also employed at a lower rate than men. Many studies address the reasons why women leave, but few studies address why they stay. Those that do, address the personal and organizational characteristics that enable women to persist. Little research was found regarding the social supports that further women's ability to persist in the male-dominated field of engineering. This study surveyed 173 men and women engineers in the United States and India as well as collected qualitative data. The research focused on the social supports of family, friends, a special person, supervisors, coworkers, and professional networking, to determine how they support engineering persistence in the four demographics. The participants were scored on their level of persistence and the impact of social supports was evaluated against it. All supports were significant, although not for all demographics. Social supports of family, friends and a special person were more important to the sample of engineers from India, a collectivist culture. The importance of the supervisor relationship to women in the United States was reaffirmed. Professional networking, informal or formal, was the only support significantly related to persistence across all demographics. In the qualitative data there was a strong theme; coworkers are their friends and they support them in their engineering life. As companies re-think their organizational environment and attempt to change engineering culture and long-standing attitudes, women can engage in creating strong social supports and assist in building quality professional networking opportunities. A strong web of support strengthens a woman engineer0́9s ability to persist during difficult times and provides them opportunities for personal and career growth. It can also be a vehicle for furthering diversity and inclusion in their organizations.

Book excerpt: Limited information is available regarding the factors that promote persistence by women in engineering programs. Stated simply, the problem is that the number of women engineers continues to fall short in comparison to the gender ratio of women to men in the population in the U.S. (BEST, 2002) and worldwide (Hersh, 2000). More women engineers are needed in general and in proportion to male engineers. This study addressed two questions. (1) What are the factors that support women in engineering? and (2) What are the factors that attract women to and help them to persist in a career in engineering? The methods consisted of a search of related research to identify probably factors followed by qualitative interviews with program persisters and switchers. The most frequently cited factors were selected for inclusion in the interview protocol for the qualitative portion of this study. They were: (a) faculty support, (b) class environment, (c) department environment, (d) attraction to another discipline, (e) parental encouragement, and (f) self-confidence. The result was an evaluation of the relative merits of the factors for persisters and switchers. Additionally a new metaphor relating to force field analysis is proposed. This metaphor was supported by the findings of the study whereby persisters reported fewer restraining forces while switchers reported fewer driving forces. The two driving forces that are common among persisters and switchers are formal support programs and peer support programs. Strengthening these two programs would increase the driving forces for all students. These findings will assist faculty, advisers, and program planners to better meet the needs of women in engineering programs and likely help to reduce the attrition rates of women in engineering. Interview Questions for Persisters are appended. (Contains 3 figures and 2 tables.).

Book Understanding the Engineering Problem

Download or read book Understanding the Engineering Problem written by Nikki Alexandra Falk and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the academic self-efficacy and persistence goals of 72 diverse female Engineering majors. Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994) coupled with Practice Theory (Bourdieu, 1998) and Social Capital Theory (Lin, 1999) served as the theoretical framework. The relationships between social cognitive variables (engineering self-efficacy, outcome expectations, interests) as well as the influence of contextual and cultural variables (perceived campus climate, distance from privilege, and access to resources) on female students' intent to persist in Engineering were examined. Hierarchical linear regression revealed that only outcome expectations significantly contributed to the prediction of female students' intent to persist in Engineering. Exploratory analysis revealed that outcome expectations were most influential in predicting Engineering self-efficacy. Including privilege and perception of campus climate into the model significantly predicted self-efficacy above and beyond the original SCCT variables. This study supports the addition of cultural contextual variables in the SCCT choice model and warrants future research with minority female populations. Key words: women in STEM, social cognitive career theory, privilege, persistence, underrepresented students.

Book Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech

Download or read book Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by . This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demand for tech professionals is expected to increase substantially over the next decade, and increasing the number of women of color in tech will be critical to building and maintaining a competitive workforce. Despite years of efforts to increase the diversity of the tech workforce, women of color have remained underrepresented, and the numbers of some groups of women of color have even declined. Even in cases where some groups of women of color may have higher levels of representation, data show that they still face significant systemic challenges in advancing to positions of leadership. Research evidence suggests that structural and social barriers in tech education, the tech workforce, and in venture capital investment disproportionately and negatively affect women of color. Transforming Trajectories for Women of Color in Tech uses current research as well as information obtained through four public information-gathering workshops to provide recommendations to a broad set of stakeholders within the tech ecosystem for increasing recruitment, retention, and advancement of women of color. This report identifies gaps in existing research that obscure the nature of challenges faced by women of color in tech, addresses systemic issues that negatively affect outcomes for women of color in tech, and provides guidance for transforming existing systems and implementing evidence-based policies and practices to increase the success of women of color in tech.
