Book Building a Collaboratory in Environmental and Molecular Science

Download or read book Building a Collaboratory in Environmental and Molecular Science written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Collaboratory is a meta-laboratory that spans multiple geographical areas with collaborators interacting via electronic means. Collaboratories are designed to enable close ties between scientists in a given research area, promote collaborations involving scientists in diverse areas, accelerate the development and dissemination of basic knowledge, and minimize the time-lag between discovery and application. PNL is developing the concept of an Environmental and Molecular Sciences Collaboratory (EMSC) as a natural evolution of the EMSL project. The goal of the EMSC is to increase the efficiency of research and reduce the time required to implement new environmental remediation and preservation technologies. The EMSC will leverage the resources (intellectual and physical) of the EMSL by making them more accessible to remote collaborators as well as by making the resources of remote sites available to local researchers. It will provide a common set of computer hardware and software tools to support remote collaboration, a key step in establishing a collaborative culture for scientists in the theoretical, computational, and experimental molecular sciences across the nation. In short, the EMSC will establish and support an 'electronic community of scientists researching and developing innovative environmental preservation and restoration technologies.

Book Sourcebook of Models for Biomedical Research

Download or read book Sourcebook of Models for Biomedical Research written by P. Michael Conn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-07 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of systems represented in this volume is a unique effort to reflect the diversity and utility of models used in biomedicine. That utility is based on the consideration that observations made in particular organisms will provide insight into the workings of other, more complex systems. This volume is therefore a comprehensive and extensive collection of these important medical parallels.

Book Advanced Engineering Environments

Download or read book Advanced Engineering Environments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the capabilities of technologies applicable to distributed networking, telecommunications, multi-user computer applications, and interactive virtual reality are creating opportunities for users in the same or separate locations to engage in interdependent, cooperative activities using a common computer-based environment. These capabilities have given rise to relatively new interdisciplinary efforts to unite the interests of mission-oriented communities with those of the computer and social science communities to create integrated, tool-oriented computation and communication systems. These systems can enable teams in widespread locations to collaborate using the newest instruments and computing resources. The benefits are many. For example, a new paradigm for intimate collaboration between scientists and engineers is emerging. This collaboration has the potential to accelerate the development and dissemination of knowledge and optimize the use of instruments and facilities, while minimizing the time between the discovery and application of new technologies. Advanced Engineering Environments: Achieving the Vision, Phase 1 describes the benefits and feasibility of ongoing efforts to develop and apply advanced engineering environments (AEEs), which are defined as particular implementations of computational and communications systems that create integrated virtual and/or distributed environments linking researchers, technologists, designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and customers.

Book Collaborative Engineering and the Internet

Download or read book Collaborative Engineering and the Internet written by Anthony Mills and published by Society of Manufacturing Engineers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Via the Web. In manufacturing, new communication technologies have ushered in a new era for the team-based product development strategy of concurrent engineering. Known as collaborative engineering, the new phase makes it unnecessary for team members to be in the same room. seated around the same table. The team members can be scattered around the facility, around the city, around the country, and even around the world, and can still contribute their valuable input. More complex than traditional concurrent engineering, collaborative engineering not only deals with collaboration itself, but also the infrastructure and environments that enable and nurture it. Going far beyond describing the use of the internet, Anthony Mills thoroughly examines the principles, applications and various tools relevant to this new age of industrial communications. He explains how an organization can use them effectively in welding together personnel and suppliers - no matter how far flung - so that they can play major roles in the organization's success.
