These are in continuation of work begun in previous years, the results of which have found expres sion in Bulletin N o. 10, in the Yearbooks for 1896 and 1898, and else where, and are based upon observations conducted, for the most part, during the year 1898. At the same time there has bu en added, from the notes that have accumulated by correspondence and otherwise in this omoe, as matters of record, much that is new or unpublished con cerning the food and other habits as well as the distribution of the species of insects considered. Book Ecologically Based Pest Management

Download or read book Ecologically Based Pest Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widespread use of broad-spectrum chemical pesticides has revolutionized pest management. But there is growing concern about environmental contamination and human health risksâ€"and continuing frustration over the ability of pests to develop resistance to pesticides. In Ecologically Based Pest Management, an expert committee advocates the sweeping adoption of ecologically based pest management (EBPM) that promotes both agricultural productivity and a balanced ecosystem. This volume offers a vision and strategies for creating a solid, comprehensive knowledge base to support a pest management system that incorporates ecosystem processes supplemented by a continuum of inputsâ€"biological organisms, products, cultivars, and cultural controls. The result will be safe, profitable, and durable pest management strategies. The book evaluates the feasibility of EBPM and examines how best to move beyond optimal examples into the mainstream of agriculture. The committee stresses the need for information, identifies research priorities in the biological as well as socioeconomic realm, and suggests institutional structures for a multidisciplinary research effort. Ecologically Based Pest Management addresses risk assessment, risk management, and public oversight of EBPM. The volume also overviews the history of pest managementâ€"from the use of sulfur compounds in 1000 B.C. to the emergence of transgenic technology. Ecologically Based Pest Management will be vitally important to the agrichemical industry; policymakers, regulators, and scientists in agriculture and forestry; biologists, researchers, and environmental advocates; and interested growers.

An effort has also been made to furnish not alone lists Of exact localities in which each species has been captured or observed at work, but to define as nearly as possible from these data its geographic range, whether an inhabitant Of this or that life area, and whether the natural range has been extended by a corresponding increase in the cultivation Of its food plants and by commerce. Book Plant Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Classic Reprint written by Austin Winfield Morrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Damage by the boll weevil has brought into prominence many other insects which attack the cotton plant, the work of which has been largely overlooked. Among the most important of these minor insects are various species of plant-bugs. Many of these have been known as enemies of the cotton plant for some years, but they have received only slight attention from economic entomologists. When their damage is added to the injury done by the cotton boll weevil, still further reducing the crop, they become of such importance that full knowledge of their habits and life history is demanded. The studies upon which this bulletin is based were conducted to add to our knowledge of the biology of an important group of insect pests and of the most practical and efficient methods by which they may be controlled. Book The More Important Insect Injuries to Indian Corn

Download or read book The More Important Insect Injuries to Indian Corn written by Stephen Alfred Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The More Important Insect Injuries to Indian Corn: General Introduction to the Subject, and Discussion of Insects Injurious to the Plant Above Ground Thus we may say that with the exception of the ear the whole plant lies open and free to insect depredation, and that it is able to maintain itself in the midst of its entomological dependents only by virtue of its unusual power of vigorous, rapid, and superabundant growth. Like every other plant which is normally subject to a regular drain upon its substance from insect injury, it must grow a surplus necessary for no other purpose than to appease its enemies; and this, in a favorable season, the corn plant does with an energetic profusion unexampled among our cultivated plants. 'insects, indeed, grow rapidly as a rule, but soon reach their full size. Many species multiply with great rapidity, but even these the corn plant will outgrow, if given a fair chance, provided they are limited to corn itself for food.
