In World War II, the Philippine island of Leyte became the stage for a key battle between the United States and Japan. U.S. General Douglas MacArthur’s 6th Army invaded Leyte on October 20th, 1944. Soon afterwards, the Army’s 44th General Hospital landed to care for casualties. Untrained in combat, they were sent inland to the village of Burauen, very close to the front lines of fighting. The hospital tents were set up between three airfields that were recently taken from the Japanese. But, as the U.S. infantry advanced westward, they left the 44th and other service units behind, mostly unprotected. In a desperate move, the Japanese determined to make Leyte the decisive battle they hoped would turn the tide of the War. To counter the American advance, Japanese General Yamashita devised a bold plan. The first step would be a combined infantry and paratrooper attack to retake the airfields on Leyte. Subsequently, the attack placed the 44th and their patients in great peril. Their courage and dedication would be tested in the heat of battle. After the War, the Surgeon General of the Army called the 44th “the finest that ever served.”

Book excerpt: The previous two History Seminar projects have involved research which delved int the past history of the city of Buffalo. Following in this tradition, the History Seminar Class of 1959 has chosen a topic dealing with this area in the hope that we might add to Rosary Hill's reputation as a center of local history. At a meeting in the fall of 1958 this group of researchers listed a dozen or so possible topics around which we could build our class project. Our first choice fell upon the topic involving a research study of Delaware Avenue. We hoped to relate to this study, Buffalo's growth socially, culturally and economically. However, we found by December that the scope of this project was too broad and abstract and it was decided that a new choice must be made. Miss Ryan proposed that as a group we attempt to survey Buffalo's role during World War II. Realizing that Buffalo was the third major industrial center in the United States; the other two being San Francisco and Detroit, we all felt that this would be a fruitful and informative project. The scope then of this study is to describe as accurately as possible the part which Buffalo played in the united war effort. One of the main difficulties we encountered in connection with this project, was to determine the most logical method of analyzing the activity of a wartime community and second to decide upon the proper sequence in our presentation. We set about categorizing the avenues of wartime activity which our background reading brought to light. Thus we narrowed our approach in the study of Buffalo's war effort to the following eight topics (1) Federal and local restrictions placed upon civilians, (2) Industries role, (3) Increased employment , (4) Transportation difficulties, (5) The home front effort, (6) The role of agencies, (7) Civilian defense activities, and (8) Military contributions. Each girl then confined her research to one field and in weekly meetings we attempted to see the relationships which existed between those arbitrary divisions.

During the war, the protocol that required the assignment of southern white officers to command black units, both in Europe and in the Pacific theater, was often problematic, but Johnston seemed more successful than most, earning the trust and respect of his men at the same time that he learned to trust and respect them. Gene Johnston and the African American soldiers were transformed by the war and upon their return helped transform the nation. The 92nd Division of the Fifth Army was the only African American infantry division to see combat in Europe during 1944 and 1945, suffering more than 3,200 casualties. Members of this unit, known as Buffalo Soldiers, endured racial violence on the home front and experienced racism abroad. Engaged in combat for nine months, they were under the command of southern white infantry officers like their captain, Eugene E. Johnston.
