Book Buffalo Is the New Buffalo

Download or read book Buffalo Is the New Buffalo written by Chelsea Vowel and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Education is the new buffalo” is a metaphor widely used among Indigenous peoples in Canada to signify the importance of education to their survival and ability to support themselves, as once Plains nations supported themselves as buffalo peoples. The assumption is that many of the pre-Contact ways of living are forever gone, so adaptation is necessary. But Chelsea Vowel asks, “Instead of accepting that the buffalo, and our ancestral ways, will never come back, what if we simply ensure that they do?” Inspired by classic and contemporary speculative fiction, Buffalo Is the New Buffalo explores science fiction tropes through a Métis lens: a Two-Spirit rougarou (shapeshifter) in the nineteenth century tries to solve a murder in her community and joins the nêhiyaw-pwat (Iron Confederacy) in order to successfully stop Canadian colonial expansion into the West. A Métis man is gored by a radioactive bison, gaining super strength, but losing the ability to be remembered by anyone not related to him by blood. Nanites babble to babies in Cree, virtual reality teaches transformation, foxes take human form and wreak havoc on hearts, buffalo roam free, and beings grapple with the thorny problem of healing from colonialism. Indigenous futurisms seek to discover the impact of colonization, remove its psychological baggage, and recover ancestral traditions. These eight short stories of “Métis futurism” explore Indigenous existence and resistance through the specific lens of being Métis. Expansive and eye-opening, Buffalo Is the New Buffalo rewrites our shared history in provocative and exciting ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buffalos The magical creatures of God, these magnificent animals roamed freely across most of what is now America. Their dark cloudy shapes covered the prairie for as far as the eye could see. The buffalo helped shape the prairies with giant buffalo mounds, places the buffalo helped carve out of the wilderness, small refuge areas like miniature ponds dotting much of prairie areas. The Native American people depended on the buffalo as a source for homes, heat, food, blankets and clothing, as well as many other things. The intent that the buffalo should be eliminated came down from the corrupt rulers of the land based in the eastern part of America and Europe. Kill the buffalo, brought in assassins to destroy nearly all the buffalo in the world. The native peoples were now without their source of lively hood, which was the achieved outcome desired by the perpetrators. The buffalo herds are in distress as over 5,000 are destroyed yearly for a long time. Competition of surrounding areas make ranchers unsettled, and the buffalo are victimized in more genocide, as though the first virtual wiping out of the buffalo and indigenous people was not enough. Native Americans try to hold onto what life and land they have, and the buffalo are too. Why not let the buffalo roam it's old ancient trails as old as time? It is time now for the return of the buffalo, and for the buffalo to make the prairies healthy once more. The buffalo are healthy, the vaccinated farm animals and those left to roam are sick from toxic vaccines, a tragedy that also sickens people and any who eat such products. The family of buffalo appear to be one and the same one, making a living the best way they can within the boundaries of the park. There are a small number of buffalo rounded up for the purpose of distributing them to some native peoples according to this news.
