Book The Making of Southeast Asia

Download or read book The Making of Southeast Asia written by Amitav Acharya and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a framework to study "what makes a region," Amitav Acharya investigates the origins and evolution of Southeast Asian regionalism and international relations. He views the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) "from the bottom up" as not only a U.S.-inspired ally in the Cold War struggle against communism but also an organization that reflects indigenous traditions. Although Acharya deploys the notion of "imagined community" to examine the changes, especially since the Cold War, in the significance of ASEAN dealings for a regional identity, he insists that "imagination" is itself not a neutral but rather a culturally variable concept. The regional imagination in Southeast Asia imagines a community of nations different from NAFTA or NATO, the OAU, or the European Union. In this new edition of a book first published as The Quest for Identity in 2000, Acharya updates developments in the region through the first decade of the new century: the aftermath of the financial crisis of 1997, security affairs after September 2001, the long-term impact of the 2004 tsunami, and the substantial changes wrought by the rise of China as a regional and global actor. Acharya argues in this important book for the crucial importance of regionalism in a different part of the world.

Book Buddhist Heritage Sites of India

Download or read book Buddhist Heritage Sites of India written by Sunita Dwivedi and published by Rupa Publications. This book was released on 2017-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author, traveller and researcher Sunita Dwivedi recounts in this book the captivating tales of her travels to the Buddhist heritage sites of India. Taking on this arduous yet spiritually gratifying journey, she leaves no stone unturned in bringing us closer to the antiquities and mysteries of the ancient Buddhist sites-including the archaeological history of those built under the patronage of Asoka the Great, traversed by the devoted and fearless Chinese pilgrims and ambassadors, forgotten over time and rediscovered after centuries by colonial explorations and excavations. A delight for travellers and sightseers venturing into isolated Buddhist cultural geography, her wanderings account the length and breadth of the country-from the better known in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to the more interior ones in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and even across the border into Lumbini and Tilaurakot in Nepal; from West Bengal and Odisha in the east to Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra in the west; and through Madhya Pradesh finally to the south of India. Offering an unforgettable kaleidoscope of awe-inspiring stupas, monasteries, paintings and sculptures, Buddhist Heritage Sites of India is a collation of complex and curious trajectories of a heritage that not only belongs to India but also to the world at large.

Book Uddiyana Guru Padmasambhava The Second Buddha

Download or read book Uddiyana Guru Padmasambhava The Second Buddha written by Prabir Kumar Pattanaik and published by B K PUBLICATIONS PRIVATE LIMITED. This book was released on 2024-07-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist Acharya Padmasambhava of the Vajrayana school of Mahayana sect, being invited by the king of Tibet, went there during the first half of the eighth century AD. He firmly established this esoteric form of Buddhism there and other Himalayan lands, which is known as “Lamaism”. He is deified and celebrated in Lamaism as Buddha himself, even more than that. As a direct result of Padmasambhava’s efforts, the people of Tibet were elevated to a state of unsurmountable spiritual culture. He is, therefore, truly one of the greatest of the world’s culture heroes. He is most revered and is honoured as the Second Buddha. He belongs to India and hails from Uddiyana. Therefore, he is popularly known as Uddiyana Guru. But, a holy personality known all over the world, a Great Guru, is almost a forgotten name in India, least remembered, not in history, not in literature, not anywhere even among the Buddhist circles in India. Padmasambhava originally belongs to Uddiyana, the location of this place has been disputed by some scholars to be in Swat Valley within the ancient Gandhara region, which is not tenable. The present work is an attempt to study all aspects pertaining to this Guru, starting from his magical appearance and penances to his mystical life, his works and achievements all through the Himalayan region along with Tibet. That leads to establish strongly that the home of the Uddiyana Guru is nowhere else but in Odisha. Focus has been laid to establish facts and all evidences showing that Uddiyana is but Odisha. This may be considered as the exclusive and exhaustive compilation, published for the first time in India.

Book Indian Esoteric Buddhism

Download or read book Indian Esoteric Buddhism written by Ronald M. Davidson and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the rapid spread of Buddhism the historical origins of Buddhsit thought and practice remain obscure. This work describes the genesis of the Tantric movement and in some ways an example of the feudalization of Indian society. Drawing on primary documents from sanskrit, prakrit, tibetan, Bengali, and chinese author shows how changes in medieval Indian society, including economic and patronage crises, a decline in women`s participation and the formation of large monastic orders led to the rise of the esoteric tradition in India.

Book Tantric Buddhism Uddiyana and Odisha

Download or read book Tantric Buddhism Uddiyana and Odisha written by Frédéric Moronval and published by Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Odisha, in eastern India, is home to a unique concentration of images of deities and symbols dating from the earlier days of Tantric Buddhism up to the later developments of Vajrayana. Could Odisha be Oddiyana, the mythical kingdom from which Vajrayana is said to originate? This essay on one aspect of the history of Tantric Buddhism in South Asia tries to answer this question within the larger frame of the development of Buddhism in India. Going against some received ideas, it also exposes the role played by Buddhism in the birth of Hinduism. It concludes with an examination of the Buddhist heritage in contemporary Indian religious movements. This volume contains excerpts from The Accomplishment of Wisdom, by King Indrabodhi, as well as the integrality of the Accomplishment of Non-Duality, by Princess Lakshminkara, both translated exclusively from the original Sanskrit texts for the first time.
