Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enlightenment in Dispute is the first comprehensive study of the revival of Chan Buddhism in seventeenth-century China. Focusing on the evolution of a series of controversies about Chan enlightenment, Jiang Wu describes the process by which Chan reemerged as the most prominent Buddhist establishment of the time. He investigates the development of Chan Buddhism in the seventeenth century, focusing on controversies involving issues such as correct practice and lines of lineage. In this way, he shows how the Chan revival reshaped Chinese Buddhism in late imperial China. Situating these controversies alongside major events of the fateful Ming-Qing transition, Wu shows how the rise and fall of Chan Buddhism was conditioned by social changes in the seventeenth century.

Book Abstract of Four Lectures on Buddhist Literature in China

Download or read book Abstract of Four Lectures on Buddhist Literature in China written by Samuel Beal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abstract of Four Lectures on Buddhist Literature in China: Delivered at University College, London IN the introduction to a work 1 published in the year 1 87 1 I called attention to the fact that we possessed at that time, in England at least, no complete set of the Buddhist Sacred Writings as they are known in China and Japan. These Sacred Writings, constituting what is called the Tripitaka, or three receptacles, had been printed at various times in China from wooden blocks, which were as often destroyed by fire or civil war. It is said that during the Sung and Yuan dynasties (ad. 960 - 1330) as many as twenty different editions had been produced, but during the troubles occurring towards the end of the Yuan period all these perished. During the Ming dynasty (a.d. 1360 - 1620) two editions, called the Southern and the Northern, were published, the latter of which was reproduced in I 586 by a priest called Mi-tsang, after twenty years' labour. This edition is known in Japan as the Ming tsong, or Tripitaka of the Ming dynasty. It is this copy of the Sacred Books that I requested His Excellency Iwakura Tomomi to procure for the India Office Library, and Which he so generously promised to do, in I 874. A similar request had been already made at Pekin, but the Chinese Government, jealously conservative, had declined to accede to it. We were fortunately able to look elsewhere; and in 1875 the entire Tripitaka was received at the India Office, in fulfilment of the promise made by the Japanese ambassador. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fusang or the Discovery of America by Chinese Buddhist Priests in the Fifth Century Possibility of passing by sea from the Chinese to the American coast, I have thought it appropriate to place next in the series a letter from Colonel Barclay Kennon, who, as a prominent officer in the United States Coast Survey, passed several years in the North Pacific, during which time he surveyed and mapped, in company with two colleagues, the entire coast, both on the Asiatic and American sides. Colonel Kennon is of opinion that the voyage supposed to have been taken by the Buddhist monks is easily practicable, and might be effected even'in an open boat - the vessel in which he himself passed both summer and winter, and in which he sailed more than miles, having been simply a small pilot-boat. To this I have added, in further reference to certain remarks by Professor Neu mann, a comment on the afiinities between American. Book Chinese Esoteric Buddhism

  • Author : Geoffrey C. Goble
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2019-10-08
  • ISBN : 0231550642

Download or read book Chinese Esoteric Buddhism written by Geoffrey C. Goble and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Esoteric Buddhism is generally held to have been established as a distinct and institutionalized Buddhist school in eighth-century China by “the Three Great Masters of Kaiyuan”: Śubhākarasiṃha, Vajrabodhi, and Amoghavajra. Geoffrey C. Goble provides an innovative account of the tradition’s emergence that sheds new light on the structures and traditions that shaped its institutionalization. Goble focuses on Amoghavajra (704–774), contending that he was the central figure in Esoteric Buddhism’s rapid rise in Tang dynasty China, and the other two “patriarchs” are known primarily through Amoghavajra’s teachings and writings. He presents the scriptural, mythological, and practical aspects of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism in the eighth century and places them in the historical contexts within which Amoghavajra operated. By telling the story of Amoghavajra’s rise to prominence and of Esoteric Buddhism’s corresponding institutionalization in China, Goble makes the case that the evolution of this tradition was predicated on Indic scriptures and practical norms rather than being the product of conscious adaptation to a Chinese cultural environment. He demonstrates that Esoteric Buddhism was employed by Chinese rulers to defeat military and political rivals. Based on close readings of a broad range of textual sources previously untapped by English-language scholarship, this book overturns many assumptions about the origins of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fo-Sho-Hing-Tsan-King: A Life of Buddha This term is now well recognised. It is used to denote the Buddhism of Nepal, Thibet, China, Japan, and Mongolia, as distinguished from the Buddhism of Ceylon, Burmah, and Siam. The radical difference between the two schools is this, that Northern Buddhism is the system developed after contact with Northern tribes settled on the Indus, while the Southern school, on the contrary, represents the pri mitive form of the Buddhist faith as it came (presumably) from the hands of its founder and his immediate successors. We might, without being far wrong, denote the developed school as the Buddhism of the valley of the Indus, whilst the earlier school is the Buddhism of the valley of the Ganges. In China there is a curious mixture of the teaching of both schools. The books of the contemplative sect in Southern China are translations or accommodations from the teaching of men belonging to the South of India, whilst in the North we find the books principally followed are those brought by priests from the countries bordering on the Indus, and therefore representing the developed school of the later complex system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Buddha I have done my best to expose both the theoretical and practical doctrines of Buddha, all in all according to the authorized Chinese Text. I should have published the classification of Buddha's Personality, ' had it not been too voluminous and so complicated for this small book. It may not be altogether useless for those readers who can read the Japanese original as well as the English translation to state here that the translators have given a few small turns and contractions to my original, with out missing the spirit of the original.
