Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US dollar is the world's indispensable currency. The dollar's preeminent status gives the United States enormous coercive powers which it flexes in the form of financial sanctions to punish its adversaries. Over the last twenty years, Washington has relied on financial sanctions with greater and greater frequency. Bucking the Buck argues that the more the United States wields the dollar as a weapon of foreign policy, the more its adversaries will move their international economic activities into other currencies to avoid Washington's coercive reach. Through a combination of case studies and statistical analysis, the book establishes a relationship between US financial sanctions and the rise of "anti-dollar" policies, which are designed to reduce an economy's reliance on the US currency. Though some anti-dollar policies fail to achieve this goal, McDowell's analysis indicates that in many cases they are successful. Patterns of "de-dollarization" following sanctions are clear. In some cases, the anticipation of future sanctions may provoke similar policy measures. Though McDowell does not conclude that sanctions threaten the dollar's status as the world's key currency, the potential consequences of sanctions overuse remain important. Most notably, the use of sanctions may, over time, weaken their effectiveness as US adversaries develop systems and methods to minimize costs associated with such measures. If the United States wishes to preserve the potency of financial sanctions and protect the dollar's dominant position in the world economy, Bucking the Buck argues that Washington's approach to sanctions use should become more discerning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buck Autrey doesn't believe in giving up. Nor does the word "failure" enter his vocabulary. That kind of thinking turned a nearly bankrupt business into one of the largest and most respected electrical contracting companies in America today. Since 1966, Buck has navigated Miller Electric through major recessions, feisty unions, stiff competition, and a fast-changing industry. As the electrical industry's stabilizing force during a Justice Department investigation, he literally changed the way the industry does business--no small accomplishment for one starting out as an employee at a roller skating rink. What are the ingredients of this man's success? Trust, commitment, integrity, hard work. These, along with Buck's genuine care for others and a deep knowledge of the business are his legacy ... universal ingredients for success. One might add he also had a lot of fun along the way.

Book excerpt: “A story of surviving and thriving with passion, compassion, wit, and style.”—Maya Angelou “In America, we have a tradition of black writers whose autobiographies and memoirs come to define an era. . . . Buck may be this generation’s story.”—NPR A coming-of-age story about navigating the wilds of urban America and the shrapnel of a self-destructing family, Buck shares the story of a generation through one original and riveting voice. MK Asante was born in Zimbabwe to American parents: his mother a dancer, his father a revered professor. But as a teenager, MK was alone on the streets of North Philadelphia, swept up in a world of drugs, sex, and violence. MK’s memoir is an unforgettable tale of how one precocious, confused kid educated himself through gangs, rap, mystic cults, ghetto philosophy, and, eventually, books. It is an inspiring tribute to the power of literature to heal and redeem us.

Book The Hidden Hand of American Hegemony

Download or read book The Hidden Hand of American Hegemony written by David E. Spiro and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1973 and 1980, the cost of crude oil rose suddenly and dramatically, precipitating convulsions in international politics. Conventional wisdom holds that international capital markets adjusted automatically and remarkably well: enormous amounts of money flowed into oil-rich states, and efficient markets then placed that new money in cash-poor Third World economies. David Spiro has followed the money trail, and the story he tells contradicts the accepted beliefs. Most of the sudden flush of new oil wealth didn't go to poor oil-importing countries around the globe. Instead, the United States made a deal with Saudi Arabia to sell it U.S. securities in secret, a deal resulting in a substantial portion of Saudi assets being held by the U.S. government. With this arrangement, the U.S. government violated its agreements with allies in the developed world. Spiro argues that American policymakers took this action to prop up otherwise intolerable levels of U.S. public debt. In effect, recycled OPEC wealth subsidized the debt-happy policies of the U.S. government as well as the debt-happy consumption of its citizenry.

Download or read book Crow Hopper s Big Guide to Buck Stopping written by Keith Hosman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control: Either you have it--or you don't.Two words, "Either Or," are particularly appropriate when describing, owning, and handling the great majority of horses that buck. Either they do it because they're scared or because they're defiant. Either you're the type of person who takes on the challenge with a gleam in your eye or you have a bad stomach over the very idea. Either your barn friends think you should sell the animal because they feel embarrassed for you and your odd excuses for why you exercise it via hand walks and turnout and never a ride on the trail -- or they're pretty sure you don't realize the risk you take each time you hop aboard and they're considering an equestrian intervention. And either you've got a plan to fix it--or you do not.Make that "did not." "Did not have a plan." Because now you do. You've got this guide and so you've got a plan and with it a solution. This book, "Crow Hopper's Big Guide to Buck Stopping," falls into four sections:Section I: Learn the ground work required to begin snuffing out this deep-rooted issue. Given that "you ride the horse you lead," you'll begin your fix with your feet planted safely on terra firma. You'll gain confidence--and control.Section II: Learn to see a buck coming and what to do if it happens, then get back in the saddle for exercise after exercise designed to put you in charge and prevent future problems.Section III: Perform exercises geared to address immediate and specific bucking issues: Bucking into the canter, how to deal with your own fear, crossing obstacles, the horse that crow hops when first introduced to the saddle.Section IV: Training appropriate for every horse and rider--and an absolute must for those schooling the bucking horse. (See the Table of Contents for a complete listing.)Your horse isn't going to buck if you have control. Your task, then, becomes gaining that control, understanding when you have it, knowing when you don't, working to get it. James' painterly oils swirl with energy, visible daubs creating the dusty, monumental landscape and equally monumental horses and humans. . . . A champion indeed." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) The true tale of a cowboy's epic rodeo ride from acclaimed author Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and Caldecott Honoree Gordon C. James. In 1911, three men were in the final round of the famed Pendleton Round-Up. One was white, one was Indian, and one was black. When the judges declared the white man the winner, the audience was outraged. They named black cowboy George Fletcher the "people's champion" and took up a collection, ultimately giving Fletcher far more than the value of the prize that went to the official winner. Award-winning author Vaunda Micheaux Nelson tells the story of Fletcher's unlikely triumph with a western flair that will delight kids—and adults—who love true stories, unlikely heroes, and cowboy tales.
