Book excerpt: On July 4, 1825, construction of the Ohio-Erie Canal began with the turning of the first shovel of earth in the Buckeye Lake area. Completed in 1830, it formed the Licking Summit Reservoir, which became known as Buckeye Lake. To increase weekend business on its streetcars, the Columbus, Buckeye Lake and Newark Traction Company bought land at Buckeye Lake and built an amusement park, advertising it as “the Playground of Ohio.” The Buckeye Lake Amusement Park and the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club on Watkins Island were very popular, and during the big band era, many visitors came to dance at the Crystal Pavilion and the Lake Breeze Pier Ballroom, which featured the sounds of Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Lawrence Welk, and Louis Armstrong.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... Introduction. The writing of this little Volume has been truly a work of pleasure. It has been in course of construction, off and on, for more than two years, and oo as time goes forward the disposition to add more does not diminish. It is to youthful memories we turn for stories worth telling. The things we said or did a week ago seem of little importance and are soon forgotten, but the happenings of our youth are always at hand, and its details, if fairly told, can always find listeners, and they seem of greater importance as they become older. Who is there that does not brighten up at the mention of Buckeye Lake? It is the one spot in central Ohio where everybody wants to go. The scenes presented there are beautiful and of interest, and only exceeded by Long Branch, Atlantic City, Cape May, and a few other boasted resorts in the east. The Glacial Period. Our story begins with the Glacial Period. It is generally accepted as a fact that at one time a great field of ice came down from the north covering much of North America as well as Northern Europe. In its descent it seems to have picked up great quantities of boulders, (nigger heads). 3 And while coursing down, the ice, at places, pushed and plowed out great holes in the earth, some of which now form the beds of our great lakes besides the many smaller ones, including our own little Buckeye Lake or pond, as indicated in Schofield's Map of Survey. Then after a cold spell lasting for centuries the ice melted away, leaving a long straggling path of these niggerheads behind, many of which still linger in the fields to the great annoyance of the farmers. Beginning at the coast of New Jersey, this path can be traced, zig-zag, across the middle states, then northwesterly reaching away...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many changes have taken place in the decade since Follow the Blue Blazes was first published, changes in the trails themselves and in the way we hike them. The Buckeye Trail still wends its way around the state of Ohio, following the course marked out by the characteristic blue blazes on trees and signposts along the way. In the intervening years, however, sections of the trail have changed their route, added amenities, or just grown more interesting. From the startling rock formations and graceful waterfalls of Old Man’s Cave, to Native American mounds, battlefields, and scenic rivers, Connie and Robert J. Pond provide a captivating guide to often-overlooked treasures around the state. Each chapter features an overview of a 100-mile section of the trail and three self-guided featured hikes. The overviews and the accompanying maps may be read consecutively to acquaint the reader with the entire course of the trail. But most readers will best enjoy the trail by taking the guide along on one of the featured hikes. Each route is outlined on an easy-to-read map with GPS coordinates and waypoints to guide the hiker, as well as explicit directions from parking lot to trailhead. The Buckeye Trail is readily accessible from Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Cleveland, and Akron. Even a short trip can lead to an adventure near your own backyard.
