Book Tangled Branches

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Bailey
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2023-02-12

  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Tangled Branches written by William Bailey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-02-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Race relations are a disordered and mismanaged mess snared in prejudices, suppression, and failures in communication. Tangled Branches does not fit into the popular context of the causes or effects. While slavery existed within the author's family for thirty-four years, the black and white families remained together for 150 years. Tangled Branches is a week-long discussion between the author and the African-American grandson of his mother's maid. It is the story of a middle age white man facing his own fears of allegations of racial prejudice and finding the responsibility to tell the African-American family's history. It is the true story of the black family history through the white family. Both families are traced five generations through the evolution of both technology and society, from pioneers to the 1970s. It recounts the crimes committed by both upon each other and on those around them. It reveals a generational dependence each family had upon the other. While popular dialogue claims black and white races separated at the conclusion of the American Civil War, Tangled Branches tells how one family remained together; from Tilly a freed slave using the white family's farm as an underground railroad station, through both black and white working together to supply Al Capone with whiskey, to Ina walking out after decades of abuse. It tells of the final separation of the two families when the Author's mother's maid is fired, and of their reconciliation.

Book Hounds on the Mountain

  • Author : James Still
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2022-07-12
  • ISBN : 1950564231

Download or read book Hounds on the Mountain written by James Still and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1937, Hounds on the Mountain evokes James Still's personal experiences of eastern Kentucky through reflective folk poems describing Appalachian mountain life from birth through death. Written during the Great Depression, the collection emphasizes a collective reliance on the earth and the primacy of nature that Still observed from the seclusion of his thirty-acre home in Knott County, Kentucky. Still, who became known as the "Dean of Appalachian Literature," describes the changing landscape of his community as a tale of personal and environmental erosion. As the poet pleads for his readers to better protect this fragile ecosphere, he plants the seeds for his rise to literary eminence. Still's focus on the self-made authenticity of regional community artisans also reminded American readers during the Great Depression that local economies needed support, the same as those at the national and global levels. Hounds on the Mountain allows today's audiences to appreciate Still's first published book as both literature and as a treasured cultural symbol of Appalachian life then and now.

Book From the Mountain From the Valley

Download or read book From the Mountain From the Valley written by James Still and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One of our greatest American poets. In particular he has captured the spirit and language of the Appalachian South . . . like no other.” —Lee Smith, New York Times-bestselling author James Still first achieved national recognition in the 1930s as a poet. Although he is better known today as a writer of fiction, it is his poetry that many of his essential images, such as the “mighty river of earth,” first found expression. Yet much of his poetry remains out of print or difficult to find. From the Mountain, From the Valley collects all of Still’s poems, including several never before published, and corrects editorial mistakes that crept into previous collections. The poems are presented in chronological order, allowing the reader to trace the evolution of Still’s voice. Throughout, his language is fresh and vigorous and his insight profound. His respect for people and place never sounds sentimental or dated. Ted Olson’s introduction recounts Still’s early literary career and explores the poetic origins of his acclaimed lyrical prose. Still himself has contributed the illuminating autobiographical essay “A Man Singing to Himself,” which will appeal to every lover of his work. “Still’s is the distinctive voice of Appalachia, and we are most fortunate to have his best work in this single beautiful volume.” —Louisville Courier-Journal “Still works in traditional lyric forms and with traditional lyric tools. Rarely does a poem need a second page. The best poems are tight and demonstrate a quiet mastery, even a humble virtuosity.” —Journal of Appalachian Studies

Book James Still

Download or read book James Still written by Carol Boggess and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Still (1906–2001) first achieved national recognition in the 1930s as a poet, and he remains one of the most beloved and important writers in Appalachian literature. Though he is best known for the seminal novel River of Earth—which Time magazine called a "work of art" and which is often compared to John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath as a poignant literary exploration of the Great Depression—Still is also recognized as a significant writer of short fiction. His stories were frequently published in outlets such as the Atlantic and the Saturday Evening Post and won numerous awards, including the O. Henry Memorial Prize. In the definitive biography of the man known as the "dean of Appalachian literature," Carol Boggess offers a detailed portrait of Still. Despite his notable output and importance as a mentor to generations of young writers, Still was extremely private, preferring a quiet existence in a century-old log house between the waters of Wolfpen Creek and Dead Mare Branch in Knott County, Kentucky. Boggess, who befriended the author in the last decade of his life, draws on correspondence, journal entries, numerous interviews with Still and his family, and extensive archival research to illuminate his somewhat mysterious personal life. James Still: A Life explores every period of Still's life, from his childhood in Alabama, through the years he spent supporting himself in various odd jobs while trying to build his literary career, to the decades he spent fostering other talents. This long-overdue biography not only offers an important perspective on the author's work and art but also celebrates the legacy of a man who succeeded in becoming a legend in his own lifetime.
