Book excerpt: The acoustic noise spectrum associated with traveling bubble cavitation on a Schiebe headform in a variable pressure water tunnel was measured over the 2.5 to 80 kHz frequency range. Bubble dynamics were observed through video taping and the nuclei distribution was obtained holographically. Observed noise spectra showed that low frequency noise can be modeled by incompressible theory. High frequency noise, apparently resulting from a shock wave, can be modeled by compressible theory. The spectrum was seen to shift toward lower frequencies than predicted possibly due to axisymmetric bubble collapse. The spectral energy per bubble was experimentally derived and was found to be a reasonable approximation to that predicted by incompressible theory over the cavitation number range tested. The collapse peak pressure amplitude distribution, the maximum bubble radius distribution and the nuclei distribution were all found to be lognormal. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many theories describing cavitation noise model the phenomenon by considering the independent annihilation of cavities in an infinite fluid. Since most practical applications involve cavitation generated by the dynamical action of flow, it is valuable to know how these theories will compare with such experimental data. In this investigation, a Schiebe body is employed as a headform that supports travelling bubble cavitation which is analyzed with regard to the various theories. High-speed films were taken of bubbles collapsing on the headform while the accompanying noise signal was recorded. These results showed rebounds to generate almost as much noise as the initial collapse. By counting the number of noise bursts occurring for given noise level and flow parameters, it was found that the noise energy per bubble varies with the cavitation number as roughly sigma to the -8 power above 10 kHz, but not at all with the free stream flow velocity V sub infinity between 30 and 40 fps. The spectral energy density was observed to be flat, regardless of sigma and V sub infinity, from 10 to 100 kHz. Although maximum bubble radii as functions of sigma and V sub infinity were not adequately measured during this study, it is clear that an understanding of this parameter is critical to any cavitation noise theory.

Acoustic cavitation can affect a liquid through two possible avenues. The first is the bubble itself. The liquid is disrupted by the inhomogeneous presence of the bubble. The second avenue through which bubbles affect a fluid is through bubble dynamics. The bubble's interior and the liquid immediately surrounding the bubble are regions which undergo continual change. The bubble-liquid interface continually changes shape and size; liquid molecules diffuse into and out of the bubble; the concentration of gas in the surrounding liquid varies; acoustic streaming occurs in the liquid in the vicinity of the bubble often resulting in severe shear stresses; the interior pressure and temperature fluctuate rapidly; the bubble radiates acoustic energy as it oscillates; thermal and viscous damping hinder the bubble oscillations.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Bubble Dynamics and Interface Phenomena held at the University of Birmingham from 6-9 September 1993. In many respects it follows on a decade later from the very successful IUTAM Symposium held at CALTECH in June 1981 on the Mechanics and physics of bubbles in liquids which was organised by the late Milton Plesset and Leen van Wijngaarden. The intervening period has seen major development with both experiment and theory. On the experimental side there have been ad vances with very high speed photography and data recording that provide detailed information on fluid and interface motion. Major developments in both computer hardware and software have also led to extensive improvement in our understand ing of bubble and interface dynamics although development is still limited by the sheer complexity of the laminar and turbulent flow regimes often associated with bubbly flows. The symposium attracts wide and extensive interest from engineers, physical, chemical, biological and medical scientists and applied mathematicians. The sci entific committee sought to achieve a balance between theory and experiment over a range of fields in bubble dynamics and interface phenomena. It was our intention to emphasise both the breadth and recent developments in these various fields and to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas on both experimental techniques and theo retical developments. The programme, and the proceedings recorded herein, cover bubble dynamics, sound and wave propagation, bubbles in flow, sonoluminescence, acoustic cavitation, underwater explosions, bursting bubbles and ESWL.

Book excerpt: Many significant achievements in new ultrasound technologies to measure bone and models to elucidate the interaction and the propagation of ultrasonic waves in complex bone structures have been reported over the past ten years. Impaired bone remodeling affects not only the trabecular compartment but also the cortical one. Despite the crucial contribution of the cortical structure to the whole bone mechanical competence, cortical bone was understudied for a long time. A paradigm shift occurred around 2010, with a special focus placed on the importance of cortical bone. This has sparkled a great deal of interest in new ultrasound techniques to assess cortical bone. While our book ‘Bone Quantitative Ultrasound’ published in 2011 emphasized techniques to measure trabecular bone, this new book is devoted for a large part to the technologies introduced recently to measure cortical bone. These include resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, guided waves, scattering, and pulse-echo and tomography imaging techniques. Instrumentation, signal processing techniques and models used are detailed. Importantly, the data accumulated in recent years such as anisotropic stiffness, elastic engineering moduli, compression and shear wave speeds of cortical bones from various skeletal sites are presented comprehensively. A few chapters deal with the recent developments achieved in quantitative ultrasound of trabecular bone. These include (i) scattering-based approaches and their application to measure skeletal sites such as the spine and proximal femur and (ii) approaches exploiting the poro-elastic nature of bone. While bone fragility and osteoporosis are still the main motivation for developing bone QUS, this Book also includes chapters reporting ultrasound techniques developed for other applications of high interest such as 3-D imaging of the spine, assessment of implant stability and transcranial brain imaging. This book, together with the book ‘Bone Quantitative Ultrasound’ published in 2011 will provide a comprehensive overview of the methods and principles used in bone quantitative ultrasound and will be a benchmark for all novice or experienced researchers in the field. The book will offer recent experimental results and theoretical concepts developed so far and would be intended for researchers, graduate or undergraduate students, engineers, and clinicians who are involved in the field. The book should be considered as a complement to the first book publisher in 2011, rather than a second edition, in the sense that basic notions already presented in the first book are not repeated.
