Download or read book Saving Myself One Step at a Time written by Thelma Bryan and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir recounts the running experiences of T. J. Bryan, an African-American woman who devoted herself to her profession, rising upward constantly until suddenly, after reaching the pinnacle of her career, she was pushed from her lofty position. To save herself from despair, she, at age 62, impulsively decided to pursue running although, throughout her entire life, she had demonstrated little athletic ability other than aerobics during the mid-1980s through the early 1990s. With little knowledge about running and with few role models, she signed up for a half-marathon (13.1 miles). This was hardly an appropriate distance for a first-time runner. But she persisted. She ran and ran and ran. During the next ten years (2009 to 2019), she raced at a variety of distances and developed a special love of the marathon. Along the way, she learned that, like life, running includes ups and downs and in-betweens. Through adventures and misadventures, she formed friendships, both human and animal, and learned more and more about herself. Through self-reflection during her runs, almost always outdoors in bountiful nature, she healed herself. She learned finally to be kind to herself, accepting that she is always a work in progress.Often gritty and at times magical, T. J.'s story is relevant to anyone who has experienced loss in any form and who seeks to rebound. While she was saved largely by running, she was rescued also by writing about her experiences, thus demonstrating that paths to redemption take a variety of forms.

Download or read book Bluegrass in Baltimore written by Tim Newby and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an influx of Appalachian migrants who came looking for work in the 1940s and 1950s, Baltimore found itself populated by some extraordinary mountain musicians and was for a brief time the center of the bluegrass world. Life in Baltimore for these musicians was not easy. There were missed opportunities, personal demons and always the up-hill battle with prejudice against their hillbilly origins. Based upon interviews with legendary players from the golden age of Baltimore bluegrass, this book provides the first in-depth coverage of this transplanted-roots music and its broader influence, detailing the struggles Appalachian musicians faced in a big city that viewed the music they made as the "poorest example of poor man's music."

Download or read book Keeping the Faith written by Brenda Wineapple and published by Random House. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Brenda Wineapple’s wonderful account of the Scopes trial sheds light not only on the battles of the past but on the struggles of the present.”—Jon Meacham “History at its most delicious.”—The New York Times Book Review (front page review, Editors’ Choice) The dramatic story of the 1925 Scopes trial, which captivated the nation and exposed profound divisions in America that still resonate today—divisions over the meaning of freedom, religion, education, censorship, and civil liberties in a democracy “Propulsive . . . a terrific story about a pivotal moment in our history.”—Ken Burns “No subject possesses the minds of men like religious bigotry and hate, and these fires are being lighted today in America.” So said legendary attorney Clarence Darrow as hundreds of people descended on the sleepy town of Dayton, Tennessee, for the trial of a schoolteacher named John T. Scopes, who was charged with breaking the law by teaching evolution to his biology class in a public school. Brenda Wineapple, the award-winning author of The Impeachers, explores how and why the Scopes trial quickly seemed a circus-like media sensation, drawing massive crowds and worldwide attention. Darrow, a brilliant and controversial lawyer, said in his electrifying defense of Scopes that people should be free to think, worship, and learn. William Jennings Bryan, three-time Democratic nominee for president, argued for the prosecution that evolution undermined the fundamental, literal truth of the Bible and created a society without morals, meaning, and hope. In Keeping the Faith, Wineapple takes us into the early years of the twentieth century—years of racism, intolerance, and world war—to illuminate, through this pivotal legal showdown, a seismic period in American history. At its heart, the Scopes trial dramatized conflicts over many of the fundamental values that define America, and that continue to divide Americans today.
Download or read book The Democratization Disconnect written by Brian K. Grodsky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most recent wave of democratic revolutions has convinced many in the West of the triumph of political rights. But in this provocative book, Brian Grodsky argues forcefully that nothing could be further from the truth. Today’s revolutionaries—both democratic and non-democratic—are much like those who preceded them throughout history. They’ve all come into power promising enhanced political, but especially economic, rights: higher wages, better living standards, more security. The difference between today’s pro-democracy leaders and yesterday’s non-democratic ones, the author demonstrates, rests on the perceived international legitimacy of the democratic template. Now, when even the most abusive regimes feel the need to label themselves democracies, opponents delegitimize rulers by calling them undemocratic. This sets the stage for what Grodsky calls the “democratization disconnect.” Leaders and followers fight for political change not as an end, but as the most acceptable means to attain economic rights. But by selling democracy as a panacea for the ills of the preceding regime, new elites simultaneously cheapen the notion of democracy and, by creating unrealistic popular expectations, set it up for failure. Putting a fresh new spin on hotly debated current events, this clear-eyed and informed book will be essential reading for all politically engaged readers.
