Book Black Sabbath and the Rise of Heavy Metal Music

Download or read book Black Sabbath and the Rise of Heavy Metal Music written by Andrew L. Cope and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definition of 'heavy metal' is often a contentious issue and in this lively and accessible text Andrew Cope presents a refreshing re-evaluation of the rules that define heavy metal as a musical genre. Cope begins with an interrogation of why, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Birmingham provided the ideal location for the evolution and early development of heavy metal and hard rock. The author considers how the influence of the London and Liverpool music scenes merged with the unique cultural climate, industry and often desolated sites of post-war Birmingham to contribute significantly to the development of two unique forms of music: heavy metal and hard rock. The author explores these two forms through an extensive examination of key tracks from the first six albums of both Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, in which musical, visual and lyrical aspects of each band are carefully compared and contrasted in order to highlight the distinctive innovations of those early recordings. In conclusion, a number of case studies are presented that illustrate how the unique synthesis of elements established by Black Sabbath have been perpetuated and developed through the work of such bands as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Pantera, Machine Head, Nightwish, Arch Enemy and Cradle of Filth. As a consequence, the importance of heavy metal as a genre of music was firmly established, and its longevity assured.

Book When Giants Walked the Earth

Download or read book When Giants Walked the Earth written by Mick Wall and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first significant fresh reporting on the legendary band in twenty years, built on interviews with all surviving band members and revealing a never-before-seen side of the genius and debauchery that defined their heyday. Veteran rock journalist Mick Wall unflinchingly tells the story of the band that pushed the envelope on both creativity and excess, even by rock ‘n' roll standards. Led Zeppelin was the last great band of the 1960s and the first great band of the 1970s—and When Giants Walked the Earth is the full, enthralling story of Zep from the inside, written by a former confidante of both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Rich and revealing, it bores into not only the disaster, addiction and death that haunted the band but also into the real relationship between Page and Plant, including how it was influenced by Page's interest in the occult. Comprehensive and yet intimately detailed, When Giants Walked the Earth literally gets into the principals' heads to bring to life both an unforgettable band and an unrepeatable slice of rock history.

Book Popular Culture and Its Relationship to Conflict in the UK and Australia since the Great War

Download or read book Popular Culture and Its Relationship to Conflict in the UK and Australia since the Great War written by Andrekos Varnava and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how cultural production derived from, or in anticipation of, conflict can be used to create specific social identities, national histories, and contemporary concepts of memory in Britain and Australia. Studies on the politics of cultural production have usually focussed on one conflict, or on one particular cultural medium, at a time. This volume, however, presents a broader horizon to draw attention to more popular forms of cultural production from the Great War up to and including its Centenary. The chapters in this volume interrogate the contentious philosophical notion that culture thrives in times of war, and expires in peace, and asks whether ‘art’, as a form of social barometer, can anticipate conflict rather than merely respond to it. This is a fascinating read for students, researchers, and academics interested in British and Australian History and its relationship with Popular Culture. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Contemporary British History.

Book Robert Plant

Download or read book Robert Plant written by Paul Stenning and published by Music Press Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Plant is a genuine rock legend. The tumultuous but endlessly fascinating tale of Led Zeppelin is central to his life, but that twelve-year period ended with the sad and premature death of drummer John 'Bonzo' Bonham in 1980; in the twenty-five years since, Plant has been recording new music almost constantly. For the first time, his solo years - famously working with his former Led Zep cohort Jimmy Page, numerous guest appearances and his own material - are covered in depth. This complete rock biography reveals how he teamed up with Jimmy Page in 1994 only to see their two-album partnership come to an abrupt and controversial end in 1998 and Plant's earliest and ongoing influences and passions such as Southern American blues and classic fifties R&B. Neil Daniel's also delves into the likes of his revered solo album Dreamland, consisting of a relatively obscure batch of cover songs and places Plant's later work in the wider context of both Led Zep's own legacy and the broader history of modern music. Full up to date, covering his latest album Raising Sand with the revered bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and the highly-publicised Led Zeppelin reunion in December, 2007, this is the compelling story of an enthusiastic young kid from the West Midlands who belied his humble blues roots and defied his stern parents by becoming one of the world's most recognisable and iconic rock superstars.

Book Encyclopedia of Classic Rock

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Luhrssen
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2017-02-24
  • ISBN : 1440835144
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Classic Rock written by David Luhrssen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining one of the most popular and enduring genres of American music, this encyclopedia of classic rock from 1965 to 1975 provides an indispensable resource for cultural historians and music fans. More than movies, literature, television, or theater, rock music set the stage for the cultural shifts that occurred from 1965 to 1975. Led by The Beatles and Bob Dylan, rock became a self-conscious art form during these years, daring to go places unimaginable to earlier rock and roll musicians. The music and outspokenness of classic rock artists inspired and moved the era's social, cultural, and political developments with a power once possessed by authors and playwrights—and influenced many artists in younger generations of rock musicians. This single-volume work tracks the careers of well-known as well as many lesser-known but influential rock artists from the period, providing readers with a handy reference to the music from a critical, groundbreaking period in popular culture and its enduring importance. The book covers rock artists who emerged or came to prominence in the period ranging 1965–1975 and follows their careers through the present. It also specifically defines the term "classic rock" and identifies the criteria that a song must meet in order to be considered as within the genre. While the coverage naturally includes the cultural importance and legacy of most well-known American and British bands of the era, it also addresses the influence of artists from Western and Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Readers will grasp how the music of the classic rock era was notably more sophisticated than what preceded it—an artistic peak from which most of contemporary rock has descended.

Book Garage Rock and Its Roots

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric James Abbey
  • Publisher : McFarland

Download or read book Garage Rock and Its Roots written by Eric James Abbey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When British rockers invaded the United States in the 1960s, youths responded by growing long hair and playing electrified music in suburban garages. Garage rock has grown from a hobby of the rebellious to a cultural statement: anything not mainstream, from alternative country to hardcore punk, can be included in the realm of contemporary garage rock. Issues of rebellion, clothing and hair styles, playing styles, nostalgia and "selling out" permeate the modern culture of garage rock. Pure rock from the '50s, '60s and '70s and older root styles such as swing and rockabilly have been reasserted in this form, leaving the confines of garages for clubs and other venues where fans' tastes are tuned to the underground. This study explores garage rock as it evolved alongside mainstream music and examines how it reflects notions of self though the assertion of individuality and rebellion in prosperous postmodern times. Using the Detroit music scene as the focus, the author presents two sections. The first section examines the creation of the scene, the importance of relationships to the past and the appearance used throughout. The second section analyzes the alliances and relationships to society that undergird contemporary garage rock. The author maintains garage rock has developed a place in American cultural history, and its continuation will be based on how the underground situates itself within postmodern society.
