Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning's England: A Study of English Influences in Browning To any one casually trying to recall what England has given Robert Browning by way of direct poetical inspiration, it is more than likely that the little poem about Shelley, "Memorabilia" would at once occur: "Ah, did you once see Shelley plain, And did he stop and speak to you And did you speak to him again? How strange it seems and new! "But you were living before that, And also you are living after; And the memory I started at - My starting moves your laughter! "I crossed a moor, with a name of its own And a certain use in the world, no doubt, Yet a hands-breadth of it shines alone 'Mid the blank miles round about: About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Shelleys and the Brownings

Download or read book The Shelleys and the Brownings written by Rieko Suzuki and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the intertextual relationships between the works of the Shelleys and the Brownings. While a lot of research has been done on the relationship between Percy Bysshe Shelley and Robert Browning, virtually nothing has been said about the links between Mary Shelley and Robert Browning, and very little on the connections between the Shelleys and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Rieko Suzuki seeks to address this blind spot by focusing on three areas in particular: firstly, the way that Browning’s later poems reflect back on and re-engage with Shelley’s work; secondly, Mary Shelley’s influence on Browning’s early poems; and thirdly, Shelley’s presence in and influence on Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s writing. In mapping out the various ways in which texts relate to other texts, the book also identifies a number of important thematic threads that run throughout the work of all four writers. These include theories of history and historical consciousness, providing a further dimension to the question of ‘influence’. They also include ideas about exile, gender, liberal politics and cultural heritage, central to almost all the texts discussed here, as the Shelleys and the Brownings, in different ways and in varying contexts, tried to negotiate the possibility of a more tolerant and resilient social, political and cultural environment.

Book Captain John Browning

Download or read book Captain John Browning written by Jess Browning and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about Captain John Browning who, from most accounts, was born about 1588 in Suffolk County, England, and died 10 June 1662 in York County, Virginia. He allegedly married Sybil Dameron of Gloucestershire, England about the year 1614. Their children were George (born about 1614) and William (born about 1615) in addition to accounts of other children including a Thomas (born about 1620). Then, sometime around the year 1621 or so, he and his family left England for Virginia where his descendants supposedly established a line of Southern Brownings whose descendant could eventually be found throughout America. His ancestors in England go back hundreds of years in the counties of Suffolk, Gloucestershire, Dorset, and Wiltshire. The interesting thing about him and this story is that there is more speculation about him and less known than that of many people in history.

Book Browning

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roy E. Gridley
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-28
  • ISBN : 1317207602
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book Browning written by Roy E. Gridley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1972. Browning was a keen observer and dramatic recorder of nineteenth-century European culture; his poetry reflects a wide range of intellectual, religious and artistic issues of his day. Roy E. Gridley shows here that during the six decades of Browning’s active writing career (1832-89), his poetry is a record and an interpretation of the changing modes of thought, feeling and expression of nineteenth-century life. Browning was a ‘romantic’ who, by virtue of his realistic and often revolutionary poetry, became a ‘modern’, and had considerable influence on writers such as Yeats, Eliot and Pound. While surveying the whole of Browning’s life and work, Gridley focuses closely on the more famous poems, examining them as documents that give the general reader a deeper appreciation of the richness and diversity of life in Victorian Europe.
