Book A History of Modern Political Thought

Download or read book A History of Modern Political Thought written by Gary K. Browning and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we to understand past political thinkers? Is it a matter simply of reading their texts again and again? Do we have to relate past texts of political thought to the contexts in which ideas were composed and in which the aims of past thinkers were formulated? Or should past political theories be deconstructed so as to uncover not what their authors maintain, but what the texts reveal? In this book, theories of interpreting past political thinkers are examined and the interpretive methods of a range of theories are reviewed, including those of Hegel, Marx, Oakeshott, Collingwood, the Cambridge School, Foucault, Derrida and Gadamer. The application of these theories of interpretation to notable modern political theorists, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Bentham, Mill, Nietzsche and Beauvoir is then used as a way of understanding modern political thought and of assessing interpretive theories of past political thought. The result is a book which sees the history of modern political thought as more than a procession of political theories but rather as a reflection on the meaning of past political thought and its interpretation. It provides a way of reading the history of modern political thought, in which the question of interpretation matters both for understanding how we interpret the past but also for considering what it means to undertake political thinking.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Browning: As a Philosophical and Religions Teacher The purpose of this book is to deal with Browning, not simply as a poet, but rather as the exponent of a system of ideas on moral and religious subjects, which may fairly be called a philosophy. I am conscious that it is a wrong to a poet to neglect, or even to subordinate, the artistic aspect of his work. At least, it would be a wrong, if our final judgment on his poetry were to be determined on such a method. But there is a place for everything; and, even in the case of a great poet, there is sometimes an advantage in attempting to estimate the value of what he has said, apart from the form in which he has said it. And of all modern poets, Browning is the one who most obviously invites and justifies such a method of treatment. For, in the first place, he is clearly one of that class of poets who are also prophets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Don Browning and Psychology

Download or read book Don Browning and Psychology written by Terry D. Cooper and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologist of religion, ethicist, theological psychologist, cultural critic, philosophical anthropologist, marriage and family expert, practical theologian, and religion and law scholar -- these are some of the many labels one could use to describe the history of Don Browning's work. Yet in spite of the multi-faceted nature of Browning's work, abiding themes and central concerns consistently emerge. Perhaps the title which best describes Browning's noteworthy contributions is that of 'horizon analyst.' Browning is always at his best when he is helping us see the world of implicit assumptions and normative images which govern various perspectives. He has an eye for metaphors which, as his mentor Ricoeur famously said, give rise to thought. Perhaps Browning's greatest academic asset has been his ability to explore the philosophical underpinnings of various psychological theories. This book focuses on Browning's rich investigative journey into Freud's dual instinct model, the relationship between human biology and culture, evolutionary psychology, William James' instinctual pluralism, Erik Erickson's notion of generativity, the ethical implications of self-actualization in the humanistic psychologies of Rogers and Maslow, evil and self-realization in Carl Jung, the place of self-injury in the thought of Heinz Kohut, as well as other issues. Beginning with a discussion of Browning's critical hermeneutical approach, heavily influenced by Gadamer, Ricoeur, and David Tracy, this book then systematically explores Browning's critical assessments of the most significant contemporary psychological movements.

Book The Moral Order of the World in Ancient and Modern Thought

This book was released on 2004-02-24 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.B. Bruce's second series of Gifford Lectures, delivered in Glasgow (1898) focus on an historical survey of the Moral Order. The first series of lectures had been on Providential Order, which Bruce considered theistic. Here, Bruce includes in his survey those whose moralities do not necessarily hold to a belief in a living personal God, as well as theists. The author conducts his survey in light of the question, with regard to the moral order, what have the wisest thought? Included in the survey are chapters on Buddha, Zoroaster, the Stoics, Job, Jesus, Browning, and modern dualism.

When I heard the news, the first thing I thought was, That’s it. That’s the first line of my novel. ‘I was in Zagreb the day that Michael Jackson died.’” First Michael Jackson, then Pina Bausch. Next is Merce Cunningham. Gray Adams, a former dancer with the Royal Swiss Ballet at work on his dissertation at NYU, has a theory spurred by countless hours of YouTube-based procrastination: Someone is killing these famous dancers! (And he may bear an uncanny resemblance to Jimmy Stewart, circa Vertigo.) I’m Trying to Reach You is a moving and candid contemporary look at how we process grief, as well as how we love and communicate with one another. "A provocative novel... that blurs the boundaries between life and performance, dance, art, and viral video. The novel is also framed in the world of performance art and is itself its own kind of performance... and feels rightly reflective of a moment when dance is pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a performance space." —Slate

Book Browning Upon Arabia

Download or read book Browning Upon Arabia written by Hédi A. Jaouad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Browning Upon Arabia charts Robert Browning’s early and enduring engagement with the East, particularly the Arab East. This book highlights the complexities of Browning’s poetry, revealing Browning’s resistance to triumphalist and imperialist forms of Orientalism generated by many nineteenth-century British and European literary and scholarly portrayals of the East. Hédi A. Jaouad argues that Browning extensively researched the literature, history, philosophy, and culture of the East to produce poetry that is sensitive to its Eastern resources and devoted to confirming the interrelation of Northern and Eastern knowledge in pursuit of a new form of transcendental humanism.

Book Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies

Download or read book Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies written by Don S. Browning and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies has pioneered the broader and deeper critique of psychological theories and practice. Informed by hermeneutical theory, Browning's widely acclaimed work drew much-needed attention to the ethical and metaphysical, even religious, assumptions that underlie present-day psychology. It has been deeply influential in many social sciences, in addition to the fields of pastoral counseling and practical theology. In this much-needed second edition, Browning and his new co-author show how the field of social science has indeed grasped and appropriated the hermeneutical approach, though with only slight appreciation of the religious dimensions of the social scientific endeavor. Browning and Cooper provide a completely new first chapter, newly situating the discussion, and update the core chapters of the book. They also add two new chapters, carrying the dialogue on with three new psychotherapeutic theorists, then with new evangelical writers on the relation of theology and psychology. This new edition, like its predecessor, will set the stage for the religion-psychology dialogue for years to come.
