Download or read book Brownbird s Luck written by Kriss Erickson and published by AKW Books. This book was released on 2009-01-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deila Weaver lives on a flax farm with her Da, Skalle, a bitter alcoholic whose only love is his land, and her Gran, a blind woman the local people have dubbed 'Dark Weaver' for her ability to weave intricate tapestries from the linen she and Deila make from the flax. When a mysterious creature kills the Weaver's plow horse's new foal, Skalle feels as if he can't go on. He had looked to Molly's foal as a way to keep working his fields. Deila sees a drab brown bird in the fields--a brownbird that is said to have magic powers since rains often fall on the parched ground when the bird is seen. Soon after, she and Gran watch a strange storm over the fields. A white foal appears in the barn to replace Molly's foal. As the foal grows, Deila realizes that he is magic, too.

Download or read book Ewe St mme written by Jakob Spieth and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ewe of Ghana, Togo and Benin have been one of the most documented ethnic groups in West Africa, given their encounters with the German, French and British colonial administrations. In 1906, Jakob Spieth, a German Bremen Missionary, published Die Ewe-Stamme. Die Ewe-Stamme is one of the most comprehensive treatises on the history, religion, economic life, traditional social structure, and, indeed, the entire spectrum of everyday life of the Ewe. Published over 100 years ago the book had limited circulation and became increasingly rare to the extent that it almost became a deified piece of work and source of classified knowledge. Additionally, Die Ewe-Stamme was published in German and old non-standard and colloquial Ewe languages. It is hoped this translation of Die Ewe-Stamme into English and contemporary Ewe might create a revival of interest amongst researchers, enhance the understanding for the traditional Ewe culture and become reading material in schools and universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories, myths and legends associated with more than 80 kinds of birds from around the world. Why are owls regarded either as wise or as harbingers of doom? What gave rise to the fanciful belief that storks bring babies? Why is the eagle associated with victory or the hummingbird with paradise? The answers are here in this engaging book. By re-telling the many legends, beliefs, proverbs and predictions associated with more than 80 birds from many nations, it brings into focus the close – and often ancient – links between humans and these remarkable feathered descendants of dinosaurs. Discover, for instance: - Why the cockerel features on many church spires - The one sacred bird that symbolises life and peace in most cultures - How to dispel bad luck if you see a certain black-and-white bird - The South American 'devil bird' once thought to be a dragon Birds: Myth, Lore and Legend draws on historical accounts and scientific literature to reveal how colourful tales or superstitions were shaped by human imagination based on each bird's behaviour or appearance. It offers a fresh and enchanting perspective on birds across the world.

Download or read book Friction written by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the struggle over the Indonesian rainforests can teach us about the social frictions that shape the world around us Rubbing two sticks together produces heat and light while one stick alone is just a stick. It is the friction that produces movement, action, and effect. Anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing challenges the widespread view that globalization invariably signifies a clash of cultures, developing friction as a metaphor for the diverse and conflicting social interactions that make up our contemporary world. Tsing focuses on the rainforests of Indonesia, where in the 1980s and 1990s capitalist interests increasingly reshaped the landscape not so much through corporate design as through awkward chains of legal and illegal entrepreneurs that wrested the land from previous claimants, creating resources for distant markets. In response, environmental movements arose to defend the rainforests and the communities of people who live in them. Not confined to a village, province, or nation, the social drama of the Indonesian rainforests includes local and national environmentalists, international science, North American investors, advocates for Brazilian rubber tappers, United Nations funding agencies, mountaineers, village elders, and urban students—all drawn into unpredictable, messy misunderstandings, but misunderstandings that sometimes work out. Providing an invaluable portfolio of methods for the study of global interconnections, Friction shows how cultural differences are in the grip of worldly encounter and reveals how much is overlooked in contemporary theories of the global.
