Book excerpt: This study focused on four tributaries located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Miners River, Mosquito River, Sevenmile Creek, and Hurricane River. Eight microsatellite loci were used to examine genetic diversity and structure between groups of brook trout. Brook trout were sampled in Open and Restricted sections from each tributary for wider comparisons between groups. Open designated sections are the downstream portion of the tributary with access to Lake Superior, whereas each Restricted section is the upstream portion above a barrier to fish movement (i.e. waterfall). Adfluvial brook trout were classified from PIT tag movement data from two of the streams (MOS and SVN). Abundance of classified adfluvial (coaster) brook trout, individuals that utilize both stream and lake environments, varied between streams (MOS=35 to SVN= 106). The results showed that adfluvial brook trout were more closely related to the fluvial brook trout from their stream of capture than to other designated adfluvial groups. All Restricted sections of rivers were most closely related to their Open section counterparts, with the exception of Hurricane Restricted which was most closely related to Sevenmile Open. Within the Restricted sections there was moderate genetic differentiation between all tributaries. Miners River was the most genetically distinct population overall followed by Mosquito River, which showed levels consistent with higher interaction rates between other tributaries. Sevenmile Creek and Hurricane River are the most genetically similar populations. This suggests that there is more movement of brook trout between Sevenmile Creek and Hurricane River than between the other sites in PIRO. I suggest that the movement of adfluvial brook trout between systems is the most likely explanation for these patterns and inter-stream movement is driving the genetic dynamics found across the population.

Book excerpt: "The rapidly increasing temperatures of aquatic systems associated with climate change represent a novel threat to populations of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), and much uncertainty remains about the potential of these populations to acclimate, adapt, or compensate for such changes. Brook trout are considered stenothermal, with a thermal preference of 14°C to 18°C, and a critical thermal maximum of 25°C. With such narrow thermal optima, brook trout are restricted to watersheds with adequate thermal refugia to withstand warm summer temperatures. For cold-adapted species such as brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), the long-term success of the species will depend on its ability to cope with, and adapt to, rapidly changing thermal conditions. The current study evaluated growth patterns of young-of-the-year brook trout in two tributaries with dramatically different annual thermal regimes. Using a common garden design, we then evaluated the effect of variable incubation temperatures on egg size, developmental phenology, yolk sac allocation, hatch timing, and size at hatch under laboratory conditions. The results of the current study provide evidence for plasticity in the developmental response of brook trout to withstand moderate effects of climate change. The results of the field studies demonstrated wide variability between populations, individuals, and cohorts. Laboratory studies suggested that population differences were largely mitigated by the effect of the environment, and that incubation conditions appeared to have a strong moderating effect on population differences in early development."--Abstract.

Fish were subjected to almost daily inoculations or exposures for 102 days, and observations were continued for an additional 200 days. Two strains of the causative bacterium were compared. The bacterium was fed alone, with glass splinters, and with bile salts. It was also inoculated by two methods of abrasion. Other fish were inoculated subdermally and held at 7 degrees C. and at 12.5 degrees C. in order to determine the effects of these two temperatures on the kidney disease infections.

Book excerpt: "Non-native salmonids have been stocked into the Great Lakes since the 1870s and now naturalized populations use tributary environments to reproduce and for their juvenile life stage. Historically, brook trout were the only salmonid to inhabit the tributary environment and numerous studies suggest that exotic salmonids negatively affect brook trout by competing for limited resources. Other studies have been successful at removing non-native salmonids and the native populations increased. During this project 5,320 exotic salmonids were removed from a tributary of Lake Superior from 2008 to 2010 significantly reducing their density and young-of-year brook trout density increased by 260% the year after the study suggesting interspecific competition may be occurring. In order to monitor the salmonid populations closely, three techniques were used to assess population size of this small brook trout population. Mark-recapture estimates had large confidence intervals, so changes in population size could not be detected. Depletion estimates were hampered by sample size constraints and likely underestimated the population size. Relative abundance seemed to be the least likely to be biased because sampling was done on a frequent basis, which helped identify apparent changes in capture probability making it the best option to monitor changes in population size."--Abstract.

Here we used chronic temperature exposures to determine that the upper limit for positive growth in the eastern brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is 23.4 °C. Additionally, brook trout exposed to daily temperature oscillations of 8 °C, around a mean of 21 °C, exhibited growth rates that were 43 and 35% lower by length and weight respectively, than in constant 21 °C controls. Limitations in growth were associated with increases in indicators of the physiological stress response. Individuals exposed to 22 or 24 °C for 24 days exhibited plasma cortisol levels that were 12 and 18 fold greater than at 16 °C. Similarly, gill heat shock protein (Hsp)-70 levels were 10.7 and 56 fold higher at 22 and 24 °C than at 16 °C. Brook trout exposed to daily temperature oscillation of 4 or 8 °C had gill Hsp-70 levels that were 40 and 700 fold greater than controls. Acute (6 h) temperature exposures were used to demonstrate a threshold for induction of the Hsp-70 and plasma glucose responses of 20.7 °C and 21.2 °C respectively. Finally, we conducted field surveys that demonstrated increased plasma cortisol, plasma glucose, and gill Hsp-70 at temperatures above 21 °C. Induction of the cellular and endocrine stress responses is associated with decreased growth in brook trout. Thermal limitations on growth may provide a mechanism by which temperature drives the distributions of this cold-water species.
