Book excerpt: What gives Tyrian purple dye its brilliant color--the element bromine (chemical symbol: Br). Bromine compounds were first extracted from a tropical sea snail in ancient times and used in purple dyes for fabrics. The color was sometimes called imperial or royal purple. This engaging narrative describes the discovery of bromine, its place on the periodic table, its similar and different characteristics with the other halogens in group 17, and its electron configuration. A thorough discussion of bromine ions, the process of steaming out in preparing pure bromine, and the various bromine compounds and their industrial uses are also included.

Book Organic Bromine and Iodine Compounds

Download or read book Organic Bromine and Iodine Compounds written by Alasdair H. Neilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses a broad spectrum of the environmental issues surrounding organic bromine and iodine compounds. It covers their partition among the environmental compartments and the potential for their long-range dissemination. The important issue of their atmospheric chemistry is discussed in detail in the context of ozone depletion and global warming, and the significant difference between the reactions of methyl bromide and methyl iodide are underscored. The mammalian toxicity is discussed and the mechanisms of the degradation and transformation of organic bromine and iodine compounds addressed. There has been considerable interest in naturally occurring metabolites in the current debate on the fate and partition of methyl bromide that is an important fungicide and is produced in substantial quantities as a metabolite of marine algae. The possible natural occurrence of diphenyl ethers that are used as flame retardants have also been raised. A discussion is given on plausible mechanisms for the biosynthesis of representative organic bromine and organic iodine metabolites. Reaction pathways are illustrated throughout and comprehensive references are given.

Book The Geochemistry of Stable Chlorine and Bromine Isotopes

Download or read book The Geochemistry of Stable Chlorine and Bromine Isotopes written by Hans Eggenkamp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed information on the history, analysis and applications of chlorine and bromine isotope geochemistry. Chlorine and bromine are geochemically unique as they prefer to exist as single charged negative ions. For this reason isotope fractionation reflects mostly processes that are not related to changes in the redox state and this fractionation is generally modest. The book will describe the processes that are most easily detected using these isotopes. Also isotope variations, and processes that cause them, measured in oxidised species such as perchlorates and in organic molecules will be described in this book.

Book The Zinc Bromine Flow Battery

Download or read book The Zinc Bromine Flow Battery written by Gobinath Pillai Rajarathnam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed technical overview of short- and long-term materials and design challenges to zinc/bromine flow battery advancement, the need for energy storage in the electrical grid and how these may be met with the Zn/Br system. Practical interdisciplinary pathways forward are identified via cross-comparison and comprehensive review of significant findings from more than 300 published works, with clear in-depth explanations spanning initial RFB development to state-of-the-art research in related systems. Promising strategies described include the use of modern electrochemical techniques to study and optimize physical processes occurring within the system during operation, improving zinc electroplating quality during the charge phase through the strategic use of organic additives, as well as identifying suitable catalysts to optimize the bromine/bromide redox couple. The primary focus is on research and development of novel materials in the areas of electrolyte formulation and multifunctional “smart” electrode surfaces to achieve a higher degree of control over processes at the electrode–electrolyte interface. The strategies suggested in this book are also highly adaptable for use in other similar flow battery systems, while the unique cross-comparative approach makes it a useful reference and source of new ideas for both new and established researchers in the field of energy storage and battery technology.

Book Emission Measurements During Incineration of Waste Containing Bromine

Download or read book Emission Measurements During Incineration of Waste Containing Bromine written by and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results from an investigation of the emissions of dioxin-compounds that may occur from incineration of plastic waste containing brominated flame retardants (BFRs) together with waste from households and the commercial sector. The decomposition of BFRs was also investigated. The most common use for BFRs is in building materials, textiles and electronic supplies, e.g. TVs, PCs and photocopiers. In incineration plants with good combustion BFRs will decompose and form other brominated compounds, mainly hydrogen bromide (HBr). In addition, other brominated compounds will also be formed, in particular brominated organic compounds, such as dioxins where chlorine is fully or partly substituted by bromine (brominated and brominated/chlorinated dioxins). The project results presented in this report serve as a basis for authorities and the owners of incineration plants, to make decisions about whether, and under what conditions, this type of waste may be incinerated. The project was financed by the PA-group under the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Book The Chemistry of Chlorine Bromine Iodine and Astatine

Download or read book The Chemistry of Chlorine Bromine Iodine and Astatine written by A. J. Downs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astatine is a special edition that contains selected sections and addresses the needs of specialists in their respective fields. The text describes the general atomic properties of non-metals, particularly the halogens, as being the perfect series to study, both in physical and chemical terms. The book explains that the combination of the atomic properties implies excellent electronegativity values for the halogen atoms. The text also cites some behavior characteristics of halogens that are irregular, such as chlorine and bromine are similar but differ from fluorine on one side and iodine on the other. The book also compares the general methods of producing chlorine, bromine, or iodine by 1) oxidation of halide derivatives or 2) reduction of compounds of the halogens in positive oxidation states. The text then reviews the application of a complex valence theory that raises difficult questions about the bonding in halogen-oxygen molecules. The book also explains the biological behavior of astatine that accumulates in the liver or in the thyroid gland depending on the method of administration either as a radiocolloid or as a true solution. The book is suitable for molecular biologists and researchers, molecular chemists, and medical researchers.
