Book Broken Windows of the Soul

Download or read book Broken Windows of the Soul written by Arnold R. Fleagle, DMin and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Windows of the Soul: The "Broken Windows Theory" suggests that a community can reduce crime and maintain social order when small problems are fixed promptly. Alternatively, minor vandalism (such as broken windows) left unrepaired, sends the message that no one cares-inviting more serious crimes. Fleagle and Lichi have applied this theory to the problem of sexual temptation and moral failure. Broken Windows of the Soul reveals the destructive nature of infidelity, sexual perversion and pornography and its effect on the culture and the church. Unless the cracks are quickly repaired, more "broken windows of the soul" are soon to follow. Fleagle and Lichi teach the regular practice of spiritual disciplines to transform the heart and experience deep character change. Each chapter includes questions for individual or group study.

Book Window to My Soul

Download or read book Window to My Soul written by Yusuf Haas and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Window to My Soul is an empirical experience, essentially aimed to demonstrate how powerful we, as humans, really are and that when we come to terms with our impediments and make decisions to fight, victory finally becomes ours. As I reached the end of my script, I realized that I needed to complete the preface to the book (in the making). Thinking about the past, a past that Ive put behind me, I also realized that I had to bring those experiences into the present in order for me to make sense of what had really happened to me. As I structured and completed my thoughts, I eventually found the courage to put the past back to where it belonged. This book covers my experiences over a period of time, and I felt that I had to make sense of those happenings that took place around me while I was in a state of total confusion. The stroke that I suffered was one of the key issues with which I had to deal; the damage to my brain had been so severe that I could hardly grasp the full severity of what was happening to me or comprehend or come to terms with what was happening to me at the time. But I knew I had to survive in the ever-changing world around me.

Book excerpt: Using biblical, historical, and contemporary examples of brokenness, this practical and theoretical look at the process of being spiritually broken as a part of God's character-building process shows that true servanthood is not built on skills or position, but on those very character traits God has built through brokenness.

Book Pursued by Grace

Download or read book Pursued by Grace written by Colin A. Gittens and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursued by Grace: A Pastor's Restorative Journey, Colin recounts his experience of moral failure and his public and humiliating removal from ministry as a lead pastor of a large congregation. He candidly shares the effects this had on his family and on himself as a husband, father, and member of the clergy. Supported by references from the scriptures and lessons learned from other literature, Colin weaves his own story in with a very thorough examination of what leads someone—especially a Christian leader—to sin. He offers a firsthand account of the true cost of sin, and juxtaposes that humiliating and alienating ordeal with the tender, yet firm, love of his Heavenly Father, his loyal wife, his family and his supportive friends. Pursued by Grace is a story of redemption, restoration and resilience in the face of failure. While of particular interest to pastors, bible college students, and other Christian and secular leaders, this book provides important reflections and lessons for anyone struggling to avoid temptation, recover from doing wrong, and follow a Christian path.

Book excerpt: From the wildly popular author of the groundbreaking debut The Portable Promised Land comes an inventive and hilarious first novel about an African-American utopia threatened by the darker side of human nature. Welcome to Soul City, where roses bloom in the cracks of the sidewalk along Cornbread Boulevard, musical genres become political platforms, and children use their allowance money to buy records from the Vinyl Man. Its an unusually peaceful and magical American community with a strong heritage and sense of unity--at least, thats how journalist Cadillac Jackson first finds it. When Jackson visits Soul City on a magazine assignment, a mayoral election is imminent and candidates from opposing parties are battling to control the citys soundtrack. Amidst the increasingly hostile campaign, Cadillac falls for Mahogany Sunflower, a beautiful Soul Cityzen, and begins a struggle to shed the embattled African-American identity hes been taught to adopt, in order to exist in a community where the content of his character really does determine a black mans identity. What he discovers reveals as much about himself as it does about human nature and the meaning of race in America.

A stand-alone novella that nonetheless further engages with the characters in Nugent's full-length novel Gentleman Jigger, this important work deepens our understanding of the Harlem Renaissance, Black modernism, and Black modernism's relationship to the modernist work white authors were producing at the time as well. Presented here with a short introduction by Whit Frazier, including a brief discussion of how this work came to be published.
