Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century editorial cartoons often pictured government and industry hand-in-hand. Yet as early as 1889 Texas had enacted an antitrust law to curb the power of monopolies, and in the first years of the industry that would bring untold riches to the state, the attorney general used that law against oil trusts to a surprising extent. Ironically, for most of the first twenty-five years following the enactment of the Sherman Antitrust Act, federal enforcement efforts were extremely limited, leaving the field to the states. Texas was one of several states that had strong antitrust laws and whose attorneys general prosecuted antitrust violations with vigor. Political ambition was a factor in the decisions to investigate and prosecute cases against a highly visible target, the petroleum industry, but there was also a genuine belief in the goals of antitrust policy and in the efficacy of enforcement of the laws. In Broken Trusts, Jonathan Singer offers the definitive study of the formative period of antitrust enforcement in Texas. His analysis of the state attorney general’s use of antitrust law against the oil industry in this time of transition from agricultural to industrial society provides insights into the litigation process, the gap between the rhetoric of trust-busting and the reality of antitrust enforcement, and also the changing roles of state government in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The experience of Texas undermines the view that federal action has always dominated antitrust enforcement efforts and that antitrust litigation against Standard Oil was ineffectual. Rather, the results of the Texas attorney general’s litigations suggest that some states took their role in the dual enforcement scheme seriously and that the measure of success of antitrust enforcement goes beyond the amount of monetary penalties collected and the number of companies permanently ousted from a state. This volume will be valuable to those interested in the effects of the Sherman Antitrust Act, as well as those concerned with the evolution of the Texas attorney general’s office.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop was the largest landowner and richest woman in the Hawaiian kingdom. Upon her death in 1884, she entrusted her property--"known as Bishop Estate--"to five trustees in order to create and maintain an institution that would benefit the children of Hawai'i: Kamehameha Schools. A century later, Bishop Estate controlled nearly one out of every nine acres in the state, a concentration of private land ownership rarely seen anywhere in the world. Then in August 1997 the unthinkable happened: Four revered kupuna (native Hawaiian elders) and a professor of trust-law publicly charged Bishop Estate trustees with gross incompetence and massive trust abuse. Entitled "Broken Trust," the statement provided devastating details of rigged appointments, violated trusts, cynical manipulation of the trust's beneficiaries, and the shameful involvement of many of Hawai'i's powerful. No one is better qualified to examine the events and personalities surrounding the scandal than two of the original "Broken Trust" authors.Their comprehensive account together with historical background, brings to light information that has never before been made public, including accounts of secret meetings and communications involving Supreme Court justices.

Book excerpt: For reasons known only to him, Francis Teague hadn't told anyone about his adolescent years during the 1940s in Monticello, Florida. But that all changed when his granddaughter, Erica Bass, a Leon County paramedic decided she wanted to know about them. Her mother initially discouraged her as whenever the subject came up by her or Erica's grandmother, he clammed up and avoided the subject altogether. But Erica was determined. Urged by her boyfriend, Aaron, she visited her grandfather on his eighty-sixth birthday in an attempt to get him to agree to talk to her and hopefully write a book about his life as a teenager. Surprisingly, he agreed to talk to her and the book. But with the condition, she wrote everything he told her and from his point of view. Erica accepted, and the project began. Her grandfather not only talked about his adolescent years but revealed secrets he'd never told anyone not his parents, Erica's grandmother, nor Erica's mother. Some were emotionally charged, some were highly personal, and some were mysterious and suspenseful. Others were stressful, and some were downright humorous and entertaining. But Erica was overwhelmed when she discovered a shocking family secret.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2000 years of Christian Theology prohibits the very thought of the topic of this book. This book discusses the author’s view on a topic rarely, if ever, discussed by mainstream Christianity, the trespassive proclivities of Almighty God! Yes, God can, has, and will trespass! The Holy Scriptures are replete with evidence that even the trespassive love of God can cause unmitigated, and sometimes unbridled grief in our lives. This is not new Theology, but rather Dr. Jesse McGuire’s personal view on a subject that may have never been discussed in a public forum, in mainstream Christianity. There are people all over the world, who are living with an issue with God due to a loss, or misfortune. You may find yourself, and your particular situation revealed in the pages of this book! You too, can absolve God of His trespasses, in your life!
