Book The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Cinemas

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Cinemas written by Carlos Rojas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for a cinematic work to be "Chinese"? Does it refer specifically to a work's subject, or does it also reflect considerations of language, ethnicity, nationality, ideology, or political orientation? Such questions make any single approach to a vast field like "Chinese cinema" difficult at best. Accordingly, The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Cinemas situates the term more broadly among various different phases, genres, and distinct national configurations, while taking care to address the consequences of grouping together so many disparate histories under a single banner. Offering both a platform for cross-disciplinary dialogue and a mapping of Chinese cinema as an expanded field, this Handbook presents thirty-three essays by leading researchers and scholars intent on yielding new insights and new analyses using three different methodologies. Chapters in Part I investigate the historical periodizations of the field through changing notions of national and political identity — all the way from the industry's beginnings in the 1920s up to its current forms in contemporary Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the global diaspora. Chapters in Part II feature studies centered on the field's taxonomical formalities, including such topics as the role of the Chinese opera in technological innovation, the political logic of the "Maoist film," and the psychoanalytic formula of the kung fu action film. Finally, in Part III, focus is given to the structural elements that comprise a work's production, distribution, and reception to reveal the broader cinematic apparatuses within which these works are positioned. Taken together, the multipronged approach supports a wider platform beyond the geopolitical and linguistic limitations in existing scholarship. Expertly edited to illustrate a representative set of up to date topics and approaches, The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Cinemas provides a vital addition to a burgeoning field still in its formative stages.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 Christian Book Award for New Author Named one of the top books of 2016 by John Piper's Desiring God ministry To experience why the gospel is good news and answer life’s most foundational questions about identity, destiny, and purpose, we must understand what it means to be united to Christ. If you are a Christian, the Bible says that Christ has united his life to yours, that you are now in Christ and Christ is in you. This almost unfathomable truth is the central theme of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Yet few Christians today experience or enjoy this reality. Union with Christ reveals the transformational power of this ancient doctrine while addressing the basic questions of the human heart: Who Am I? Why Am I Here? Where Am I Headed? How Will I Get There? Nothing is more practical for living the Christian life than union with Christ. The recovery of this reality provides the anchor and engine for your life with God—for your destiny is not only to see Christ, but to actually become like him.

Download or read book In the Way of Jesus written by Paul D. Kroeker and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary love movement is circling the globe. Broken lives are being transformed and the love of Jesus is being gossiped into the most remote regions of the planet. However, in the West, the church is in decline. The brand image is broken. Christianity is not seen as radical or revolutionary and some of those who claim to be "Christian," seem to bear little resemblance to the life and teachings of Jesus. Through national and international engagement in Christian ministry, Paul Kroeker has witnessed this development firsthand. He has come to realize that "Though we thought we were rich, we are really poor, and though we thought they were poor, the international church has the riches we need to live the abundant life Jesus describes" (inspired by Revelation 3:14-22). In the Way of Jesus takes readers on a journey of renewed hope found in the person of Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. Through personal anecdotes and biblical insights, Kroeker lays out the path of discipleship that leads to an intimate relationship with Jesus: "When someone has been with Jesus, their love becomes authentic and compelling. They eagerly share what Jesus has done for them. Their joy is infectious. They are an open book-evidence of God's love and forgiveness. Their love for one another becomes extraordinary and reveals the good news of the Kingdom of God. Brand image and reality are one and the same. This alone will lead to the awakening of the church in the West, allowing for a new tide of God's redeeming love to move across our nation and heal our land." In the way of Jesus you become a disciple who will love, live and serve like him. Love, Live, Serve like Jesus.

Book excerpt: Based on the story of the apostle Paul's near catastrophic shipwreck (see Acts 27-28) , this is a call to individuals to "shake off" problems and disasters in life and move forward to new health and wholeness. Some days you feel as if you take one step forward only to fall back two—or ten— steps. You struggle and push through one obstacle after another. You know God is present, but when is he going to rescue you from all the storms, shipwrecks, and snakes surrounding you? The apostle Paul faced a great crisis such as this on his epic voyage to Rome, which ended with a disastrous shipwreck—yet every person aboard was saved by grasping broken pieces of wood. In Shake Free, Samuel Rodriguez issues a powerful call for you to shake off your problems. He writes, “When the storm breaks in your life, you will be driven by: • the past or the future • the pathetic or the prophetic • problems or promises • nightmares or dreams • the flesh or the Spirit • Google searches or godly churches • the drama of the storm or God’s destiny for your life.” Rather than merely surviving circumstances, you can discover how to navigate through life’s challenges to truer wholeness and bigger victories from God. “Shake Free . . . will help you break free of emotional, mental, and spiritual burdens. . . This book is necessary for all those who are ready to take back control of their lives!”—DeVon Franklin, producer and New York Times bestselling author

Book excerpt: There is a bell that hangs on the wall in the chemo room. Patients get to ring this bell when all their rounds of chemo are completed. They ring the bell with such glee and joy. Chemo is finished, and life can carry on. I hate that bell. I know that sounds foolish, but I really, really, really hate that bell. The doctors told me the second time my breast cancer returned that it had metastasized to my bones and lymph system and so it was incurable. I will never get to ring it unless God chooses to do a miracle. Instead I sit in the chemo room and stare at the bell and smile when others ring it. Some days I want to take the bell and throw it out the closest window, and other times it takes all I have to not go up and ring it and ring it some more. I am not sure if I would be ringing it in hope or defiance. Such foolishness, but I hate hearing that bell ring. I smile, cheer, and clap when someone else rings the bell, but inside I hurt. The bell makes me angry, and I sit and ask God why. Why not me? Why? I am sure that everyone can relate to something in their life they have wanted to do so badly but cant. It may be a foolish desire, but it is part of who we are.

As the project unfolds, so does a deep and transformative romance. What begins as a professional collaboration evolves into a powerful connection that neither Seth nor Heidi can deny.
