Book excerpt: What Can One Do When Life Is Turned Upside Down? Eric Franklin Simmons couldn't believe how his life had changed after receiving a visit from his first wife Delores Sherman-Simmons. Delores disappeared from Eric's life without warning demanding he sign divorce papers and not to contact her. Twenty-three years later Delores reappears and changes Eric's life forever. Eric was devastated when he found out the secret Delores brought back with her and it took all of his inner-strength not to strangle the living daylights out of her. To add fuel to the fire his normally loving and supportive family seemed to turn into people he didn't recognize. Their words and actions only brought more tension to an already explosive situation. It would take the wisdom and courage of the youngest female adult member of the Simmons family: Erica Nicole Blackstone-Clark to bring the family back together and show there can be love and a happy ending after deception, broken promises, and shattered dreams.

Book The Therapist in Mourning

Download or read book The Therapist in Mourning written by Anne Adelman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unexpected loss of a client can be a lonely and isolating experience for therapists. While family and friends can ritually mourn the deceased, the nature of the therapeutic relationship prohibits therapists from engaging in such activities. Practitioners can only share memories of a client in circumscribed ways, while respecting the patient's confidentiality. Therefore, they may find it difficult to discuss the things that made the therapeutic relationship meaningful. Similarly, when a therapist loses someone in their private lives, they are expected to isolate themselves from grief, since allowing one's personal life to enter the working relationship can interfere with a client's self-discovery and healing. For therapists caught between their grief and the empathy they provide for their clients, this collection explores the complexity of bereavement within the practice setting. It also examines the professional and personal ramifications of death and loss for the practicing clinician. Featuring original essays from longstanding practitioners, the collection demonstrates the universal experience of bereavement while outlining a theoretical framework for the position of the bereft therapist. Essays cover the unexpected death of clients and patient suicide, personal loss in a therapist's life, the grief of clients who lose a therapist, disastrous loss within a community, and the grief resulting from professional losses and disruptions. The first of its kind, this volume gives voice to long-suppressed thoughts and emotions, enabling psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and other mental health specialists to achieve the connection and healing they bring to their own work.

Book Broken Promises of Globalization

Download or read book Broken Promises of Globalization written by Shahidur Rahman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Promises of Globalization: The Case of the Bangladesh Garment Industry analyzes the consequences of the latest wave of globalization within the context of the Bangladesh garment industry's integration into world markets and production chains. Shahidur Rahman has found that although globalization has created opportunities, the process of globalization has also triggered a deformed development leaving Bangladesh increasingly vulnerable to shifts and tensions within the world trading regime. Bangladesh’s vulnerability, experienced as a constraining framework by all the major actors in dependent industrialization, is of particular importance to the progress both of workers and of Bangladesh’s industrializing modernizers in the garment industry. This book intends to respond to three questions. First, has the garment industry been able to counteract the vulnerability that women garment workers had experienced in their villages? Second, is the formation of a welfare committee a substitute model for unions when it comes to protecting women’s rights? Finally, how is a Least Developing Country dealing with both domestic and external pressures in its response to globalization? Rahman argues that in spite of the opportunities created by the growth of the garment industry, the key actors such as workers, entrepreneurs, unions, and even the government have become vulnerable in the process of the global integration of this industry. This is an ethnographic study that tells the story of the rise, growth, and demise of a Bangladeshi garment company. From a broader approach, an internal force such as the government of Bangladesh is not alone in being responsible for pushing the workers into a vulnerable position; external pressure on the state is also responsible for intensifying the vulnerability of Bangladeshi institutions and actors. Broken Promises of Globalization exposes the crisis Bangladeshi garment companies face as a result of the momentous pressures emanating from the regime of neo-liberal globalization. This ethnographic study, exploring a wide range of contemporary and recent development issues, holds particular relevance for students and scholars of sociology, political science, political economics, labor, and development studies.

Download or read book Gift Revisited written by Bill W. Holley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genre of this book may be difficult to define, but any effort to do so can be a celebration of God’s grace, rewarding for those who may thirst for a better way to define their relationship with a living and personal God. For some, it will appear autobiographical, steeped in references to personal struggles, lost direction, forgotten dreams. For others, it may be only a confessional narrative journaling the need every man has, a silent urging to escape the pain and burdens inflicted by a twisted allegiance to some sin, an onerous darkness that has enslaved. For still others, it can be a book of sermons outing a familiar text from which truth might be gleaned. The truth is, Gift Revisited chronicles a journey “back to Bethel,” an experience many believers are destined to take. We people of faith often lose our way, whether defined by spiritual exhaustion or the weight of some misstep we have taken. A “revisit” to the places of a genuine encounter with God can result in a renewed sense of hope and a rewarding promise for the future.

Download or read book Live Forever or Die Trying written by Thomas J. Mooney and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, I had intended to write this book in the summer of 2006. At that time, my involvement in the Life Extension Movement was growing, my enthusiasm was palpable; trusted friends and colleagues urged me to undertake the project, noting that it would give momentum to a nascent movement that was a mere blip on the political radar screen and bring needed attention to an issue that many thought might never be discussed seriously in a society that considers death an unpleasant but inevitable reality. Even though I agreed with this analysis, I managed to avoid any serious attempt to start a far-reaching debate on the political, social, and economic consequences of radically extending one’s life into the future. After all, I thought, the technology in this field is still at a nascent stage, antiaging research receives few government grants, controversy abounds in the scientific community as to the mere possibility of indefinite life extension; most elected officials are clueless about it and even a majority of the President’s Council on Bioethics is hostile to the idea. But that being said, I never was one to back down from a good fight. I had read much of the scientific work undertaken by a multitude of scientists determined to understand how and why human beings slowly age, and how we can reverse our demise and extend our lives indefinitely. I disagreed with the naysayers who pompously declare that prolonging life will ruin the environment, cause overpopulation, promote wars over scarce resources, as well as those narrow-minded, quasi—pundits who embraced a number of bogus charges and half-truths intended to impede further research into the causes of the terminal disease of aging. I had more than enough evidence to confront the critics, but for some unknown reason, I lost the internal primal spark necessary to fight back. I thought, should I enter a battle that few know about and even fewer care? Instead of hearing a clarion call to act, I became mired in skepticism, doubt and a growing resignation toward terminal apathy. ...
