Book excerpt: When your pen breaks at the peak of life's examination, it will not stop the examination, nor will it accept your excuse of a broken pen when the time comes for submission. You can either temporarily divert your attention away from your exam paper to examine and repair your broken pen, or you can sit back and lament the passing of time. A broken pen can write again, but a dead pen cannot.

Book excerpt: Set in a time and place unburdened by the devastation of colonialism, Olawu is a refreshing tale about a brave girl with a bold dream. Olawu is the eldest daughter of Kanakam’s only physician. Her strong will and compassionate nature are a constant source of conflict in her village. In Kanakam there are many rules for girls, and those who break them are often broken. Despite Kanakam’s restrictions against girls reading, writing, or working a trade, her father teaches her in secret. Inspired by his skill and shielded by his status, Olawu learns eagerly at his side, hoping to one day follow in his footsteps. Olawu’s world is upended when the Dikebe tribe takes over Kanakam. The Dikebe tribe has conquered dozens of villages west of the river as they wage a violent war against the Oloko tribe to the east. When tragedy strikes, Olawu and her family are left vulnerable to the harsh realities of Kanakam, including the forced marriage ritual known as the Choosing. As the eldest daughter, Olawu’s duty is to protect her family. But her father instilled in her a greater purpose, and the Choosing is no better than slavery. Driven to desperation, she seeks help from Dikembe, the son of the tribal warlord who has taken over her village. She hopes he will repay her father’s past kindness and shield her family, but hope is a fragile thing, and time is running out. Told in three parts, Olawu is an inspiring coming of age story, an immersive introduction to 19th century East Africa, and a Quarter Finalist for the 2023 BookLife Prize for Fiction.

Book excerpt: Independent Chinese PEN Center (ICPC) is a nongovernmental, nonprofit and nonpartisan organization beyond borders based on free association of those who write, edit, translate, research and publish literature work in Chinese and dedicated to freedom of expression for the workers in Chinese language and literature, including writers, journalists, translators, scholars and publishers over the world. ICPC is a member organization of International PEN, the global association of writers dedicated to freedom of expression and the defence of writers suffering governmental repression. Through the worldwide PEN network and its own membership base in China and abroad, ICPC is able to mobilize international attention to the plight of writers and editors within China attempting to write and publish with a spirit of independence and integrity, regardless of their political views, ideological standpoint or religious beliefs. ICPC was founded in 2001 by a group of Chinese writers in exile and in China, including its founding President LIU Binyan, a prominent author, journalist and activist who passed away in exile in USA on Dec. 5 2005, Dr. LIU Xiaobo and his wife LIU Xia residing in Beijing. In November of same year, ICPC was approved as a chapter of the International PEN at its annual congress in London. Since then, ICPC has made vigorous efforts to promote literature worldwide and defend the freedom of expression, writing and publication in China, and been deeply concerned about the state of civil society and open discourse there.
