Book Broken Mirrors and Burning Bushes

Download or read book Broken Mirrors and Burning Bushes written by Jeremy Rubinstein and published by Jeremy Rubinstein . This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Just call it the memoir love story of a drug addict white rapper with unresolved mommy and daddy issues." Ha. Yeah, that's a laugher. The love story part of course being my wife Alice. Except she forgets that my rap career in Southern California essentially ended with the shootout in the parking lot of Barnes and Noble, sending us pinballing across the country like a couple of wanna-be Bonnie and Clydes. Only Bonnie and Clyde weren't high on drugs, and they stuck to banks. Alice was a waitress when we met, so restaurants just made sense. And I'm pretty sure Bonnie and Clyde never had children. Our son Caleb was born in a crack motel while the cops were out in full force looking for us. But all that comes later - like way later - after Alice first goes into labor with our daughter Hannah on Halloween night - the night Corey and I got robbed at gunpoint by the Three Stooges. Of course, that wouldn't have happened had I not let Alice convince me that selling crystal meth would make me more money than just pot and ecstasy. But then Corey always said events like that tend to serve a higher purpose. What can I say - Halloween has always had a weird significance to me. There's something symbolic about running around at night with a mask on trying to be Master of your own Universe surrounded by ghosts and ghouls and goblins with your toy weapon in one hand and your goodie bag in the other trying to score as much candy as you can before the real darkness takes over - (Where did that child go? That kid with the He-Man mask? / Sometimes our biggest fears are the answers to questions we ask) Any other questions? Just read the damn book.

(Cause everything's changing - just not myself lately / What have I become, Mom, this is not not how you raised me / I pray to God God save me - 'fore the Devil he claims me / And I unleash the curse I was given when I was a baby) The love story part of course being my wife Alice. Except she forgets that my rap career in Southern California essentially ended - (... like I was cursed from the start / As the fault lines start to shift again, the Kingdom falls apart / Another rapper's got beef - it goes from the studio to the streets / And before we know what happens - Gunshots replace the beats) With the shootout in the parking lot of Barnes and Noble, sending us pinballing across the country like a couple of wanna-be Bonnie and Clydes. Only Bonnie and Clyde weren't hight on drugs, and they stuck to banks - (Call it a Spiritual Malady - Attracted to what's bad for me / As we give a new meaning to Comedy and Tragedy / Masks on, Guns drawn - as we run up in the Applebee's / And turn our moral values into a pile of blasphemies) Alice was a waitress when we met, so restaurants just made sense. Of course, none of that would have happened had I not let Alice convince me that selling crystal meth would make me more money that just pot and ecstacy. But then Corey always said events like that tend to serve a Higher Purpose. Kind of like that dream I had where I was trapped in the circus and the White Rabbit whose foot had been chopped off lead me back to my childhood apartment where my long lost father was teaching my daughter Hannah how to skip stones over our linoleum kitchen floor while Fred turned my Mom into a Ventriloquist's Puppet and then those teenagers dressed up as the characters from Wizard of Oz set fire to my neighbor's bush. What can I say - Halloween has always had a weird significance to me. There's something symbolic about running around at night with a mask on trying to be Master of your own Universe surrounded by ghosts and ghouls and goblins with your toy weapon in one hand and goodie bag in the other trying to score as much candy as you can before the real darkness takes over - (Where did that child go? The stories take the reader down a dark path which weaves the three into one. The first in The Fantasy of Love trilogy, The Broken Mirror invites the reader to consider the many facets of love from the perspective of love's victims. For some it is the answer to the meaning of life. For others it is the means to their demise. Love is sought by all, promised to none, and found by few. Rio's story is cursed. Only one will have her love, all others will fall under the curse and only know the fantasy of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Killing Women: The Visual Culture of Gender and Violence find important connections in the ways that women are portrayed in relation to violence, whether they are murder victims or killers. The book’s extensive cultural contexts acknowledge and engage with contemporary theories and practices of identity politics and debates about the ethics and politics of representation itself. Does representation produce or reproduce the conditions of violence? Is representation itself a form of violence? This book adds significant new dimensions to the characterization of gender and violence by discussing nationalism and war, feminist media, and the depiction of violence throughout society.

Book excerpt: Your faith is not just a matter of Heaven and Hell - It is a matter of Joy. There are people who describe eternal life as a ticket to heaven - like a bond you cash in when you die. They preach that we are all just here waiting for the perfect end. And we wait - gathering dust and baggage - isolating ourselves. That way of seeing the world can make life feel more like a life sentence. If we're honest about our lives, it seems we all reside in some type of confinement - some form of prison cell. We are interred by our desire to possess, to protect what is ours: our image, our religion, and our reputations. And, of course, there are the even darker cells: loss, pain, addiction, jealousy, and prejudice. Joy seems in short supply. There must to be another way of living: a holy invitation to take the first step from your cell. What if we were meant to be Nomads? What if there is an ever-present holy invitation to emerge? What if we were made to journey with a God who is always on the move? From Abraham to Jesus, the essence of faith is discovered in the idea that we are traveling forward together, changing, emerging from our cells, progressing as a people on the road toward the Kingdom of God. Life to the fullest is the sacrifice, the work, the journey with the Holy Nomad. This book is an invitation to discover the rugged road to joy.

  • Author : Paul Scott Wilson

Download or read book Broken Words written by Paul Scott Wilson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at what both our successes and failures in preaching can tell us about how to craft better sermons. Paul Wilson has long been one of the most important figures among those who seek a richer and more complete understanding of what preaching is, and how it might be made better. In this new book he draws on his broad and deep work in homiletics to show preachers how to craft a variety of types of sermons. How do you preach from the Old Testament? What are the particular needs and challenges of preaching the Good Friday, and then the Easter, sermon? What do you do when you want to address contemporary events? Recognizing that all sermons are in some ways "broken words," he includes in each chapter an illustrative sermon, some of which work well, yet others of which don't. If you stand in the pulpit long, he reminds us, you're going to preach your share of both. You would do well to learn, then, how either kind of sermon--the ones you're proud of and the ones you want to forget--can provide ample opportunities to learn how to be a more effective and faithful preacher of the gospel. Readers will learn how to vary the sources, styles, and substance of their sermons. Key Benefits: Will empower the reader to move outside their comfort zone in preaching, thus engaging the broader possibilities for preaching; Will help the reader to learn how to assess both their strong and weak sermons, and learn from each.
