Book excerpt: The young woman watched me like a cat watches a rat he is going to catch for his dinner. As I walked up the stairs to let myself in the building she jumped in front of me. She pressed her face close to my ear. I could feel and smell her hot stinking breath as she whispered menacingly into my ear, "Open this goddamned door quick bitch. You better not scream or I will run this knife right through your side." I fumbled in my purse for my key. I tried to keep as still as possible because I could feel the knife pricking my skin every time I moved. I finally found the key and my hand was trembling so badly that I could barely turn the lock. "You better hurry up bitch if you don't want to die." Once I got the door opened the woman pushed me to the floor. She went straight to the cabinets and rambled through the vaccine bottles and other medicines that had been set aside for the research project. "You better not try anything." she yelled, while she rambled through the cabinets, She cursed and threw bottles on the floor as she pillaged through every cabinet in the office. She finally found what she was looking for. She headed towards the door, turned back, came to where I was lying on the floor, leaned close to me and yelled in my face, "You better not call the sheriff bitch, or I will come back, find you, and kill your fuckin ass."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Kiana Davenport, the bestselling author of Song of the Exile and Shark Dialogues, comes another mesmerizing novel about her people and her islands. Told in spellbinding and mythic prose, House of Many Gods is a deeply complex and provocative love story set against the background of Hawaii and Russia. Interwoven throughout with the indelible portrait of a native Hawaiian family struggling against poverty, drug wars, and the increasing military occupation of their sacred lands. Progressing from the 1960s to the turbulent present, the novel begins on the island of O’ahu and centers on Ana, abandoned by her mother as a child. Raised by her extended family on the “lawless” Wai’anae coast, west of Honolulu, Ana, against all odds, becomes a physician. While tending victims of Hurricane ‘Iniki on the neighboring island of Kaua’i, she meets Nikolai, a Russian filmmaker with a violent and tragic past, who can confront reality only through his unique prism of lies. Yet he is dedicated to recording the ecological horrors in his motherland and across the Pacific. As their lives slowly and inextricably intertwine, Ana and Nikolai’s story becomes an odyssey that spans decades and sweeps the reader from rural Hawaii to the forbidding Arctic wastes of Russia; from the poverty-stricken Wai’anae coast to the glittering harshness of “new Moscow” and the haunting, faded beauty of St. Petersburg. With stunning narrative inventiveness, Davenport has created a timeless epic of loss and remembrance, of the search for family and identity, and, ultimately, of the redemptive power of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Critics Circle Award–winner elevates the ordinary events that occur to a man on his lunch hour into “a constant delight” of a novel (The Boston Globe). In this startling, witty, and inexhaustibly inventive novel, New York Times–bestselling author Nicholson Baker uses a one-story escalator ride as the occasion for a dazzling reappraisal of everyday objects and rituals. From the humble milk carton to the act of tying one’s shoes, The Mezzanine at once defamiliarizes the familiar world and endows it with loopy and euphoric poetry. Baker’s accounts of the ordinary become extraordinary through his sharp storytelling and his unconventional, conversational style. At first glance, The Mezzanine appears to be a book about nothing. In reality, it is a brilliant celebration of things, simultaneously demonstrating the value of reflection and the importance of everyday human experiences. “A very funny book . . . Its 135 pages probably contain more insight into life as we live it today than anything currently on the best-seller list.” —The New York Times “Captures the spirit of American corporate life and invests it with a passion and sympathy that is entirely unexpected.” —The Seattle Times “Among the year’s best.” —The Boston Globe “Baker writes with appealing charm . . . [He] clowns and shows off . . . rambles and pounces hard; he says acute things, extravagant things, terribly funny things.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “Wonderfully readable, in fact gripping, with surprising bursts of recognition, humor and wonder.” —The Washington Post Book World

Book Right as Rain

  • Author : Bev Marshall
  • Publisher : Ballantine Books

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and The Secret Life of Bees, this luminous, heartfelt novel explores the tragedies and triumphs, the pleasures and sorrows of two women, Tee Wee and Icey, their families, and the white family that employs them as cook and housekeeper on a tenant farm in rural Mississippi. Though the women are as different as water and wine—Icey is feisty, hot-tempered, and impulsive, while Tee Wee is more submissive and disciplined—both are driven by a passionate determination to give their children a better life. Through trying times, they are the pillars, fierce and resilient; yet they celebrate life with a love of food, music, and family that makes even the most traumatic moments endurable. The illicit love between Tee Wee’s daughter Crow and the white landowner’s son Browder; the heartbreaking death of one of Icey’s children, for which she will blame herself; the murder trial of Tee Wee’s youngest son which threatens to tear apart not just their family but the entire town—all these events are interwoven with occasions of joy, including Crow’s fulfillment of her lifelong dream and Tee Wee’s own hard-fought success. A richly emotional epic spanning two decades in the Deep South, the story of Tee Wee and Icey and their families are a prism through which we view the universal—racial strife, dysfunctional families, secrets and redemption. Illuminated by a resonant storytelling voice and dialogue that rings loud and true, Right as Rain provides indelible portraits of indomitable characters and an almost tangible sense of place, while revealing a deep understanding of race in mid-century America’s rural south.

Book excerpt: It is the year 2312, and the City covers most of the planet. Street kid David North is a “Super,” but his power – moving strings, wires, and similar things with his mind – isn’t entirely under his control. During a violent altercation with one of the City’s notorious gangs, he is saved from near death by a couple of Super teenagers who are students of an underground scientific research and training facility called Project Arete. David immediately feels a curious connection with one of his saviors—Sarah, a young woman with glowing green bionic eyes. During his recovery at Project Arete’s hospital, David is given the opportunity to join PA and, warily, he takes it. Perhaps there, finally off the City’s streets, he could learn more about his power and how to control it . . . and more about Sarah. But there is someone who doesn’t want David to get too close to her. And even though he is making lasting friendships, as David spends more time at PA, he discovers things are not exactly what they seem. An ancient mystery is slowly unfurling, and when David finds himself caught up in a 3000-year-old betrayal, he must confront impossible choices to protect the ones he loves. But will his choices doom them all to repeat the mistakes of the ancient past? The first book in the action-packed Keystone Trilogy, Return takes you deep inside a world where no choice is easy, no answer is the right one, and every step you take comes with great responsibility.
