Living conditions are about as cozy as a cardboard box, on account of his alcoholic father who can find nothing better to do than argue relentlessly with him. When Drake thinks he can’t take another blow, he is reminded daily of his mom who vanished twelve years ago. And now there’s a dead body. After a terrible accident turns into a protected secret, a twisted string of events brings Drake miles away from home to an elderly man’s front door. Every promising opportunity also brings new doubts and temptations to run away—this time for good. When the secret he has kept locked away threatens to reveal itself, Drake knows he must shield it with his very life, even if the love he has been shown undeservingly is about to be destroyed.

Book Broken Masculinities

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Central European University Press
  • Release : 2016-08-20
  • ISBN : 6155225370

Download or read book Broken Masculinities written by Cimen Günay-Erkol and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Masculinities portrays the post-dictatorial novel of the 1970s in all its complexity, and introduces the reader to a 1968-era Turkey, a period which challenges Turkey’s now reinforced Islamic image by portraying the quest for sexual liberation and critical student uprisings. Günay-Erkol argues that the literature written after the 1971 coup in Turkey constitutes a coherent sub-genre and needs to be considered together. These novels share a common ground which is rich in images of men and women craving for power: general isolation, sexual-emotional frustration, and a traumatic sense of solitude and alienation. This book is an original and significant contribution to two major fields of study: (1) gender and sexuality with respect to formation of subjectivity through literature, and (2) modern literature and history through the study of Turkish literature. The chief concern in this book is not only literature’s response to a particular period in Turkey, but also the role of literature in bearing witness to trauma and drastic political acts of violence—and coming to terms with them.

Book excerpt: Who do you declare yourself to be when your identity is fractured and you’re left in your wilderness as you navigate between two altars? The issues of life come upon us in various ways and varying stages, and knowing who we are at those times is vital. The Broken Cross seeks to speak to those issues from a personal and spiritual perspective. Written by a soul that has seen both victories and failures in life, this study offers insight on personal identity and the ways in which God has prepared us mentally and spiritually to survive during our own self-imposed failures and our sense of feeling lost between callings. When we fail to know our identity beyond our name, we face a constant struggle with our life’s assignment. Only when we embrace our God-given identity can we return to destiny’s path. Encompassing both personal narrative and biblical study, this guide explores self-awareness in relation to mental and spiritual conditions and consider the question of our God-given identity.

PC writes this book with humility and openness, which gives permission to confess that your machine is broken as well. - Travis Osborne, Pastor at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, CA As someone who has left the church, this book spoke to me. Im not talking about an awakening with pomp and circumstance, but something more simple, beautiful, and powerful. PC has always been a guiding force in my life, and this incredibly powerful book is no different. - Kyle Lacy, 3x Author and National Speaker We have a propensity to build machines out of our faith. We like to put in the right things in hopes it will churn out the right product. We become proud of the manufactured machines of faith we have built. The troubles with machines are they have no hearts and they break down. If your machine has broken down, you may have no idea what to do. Embark on a search for the heart that still beats for you. Embrace the wonder and awe of the ridiculous love of God that has always been for you. Encounter the heart of the gospel, which is the heart of Jesus beneath all of your pain, failure, and shame.

Book Jewish Identities in Postcommunist Russia and Ukraine

Download or read book Jewish Identities in Postcommunist Russia and Ukraine written by Zvi Gitelman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the USSR collapsed, ethnic identities were imposed by the state. This book analyzes how and why Jews decided what being Jewish meant to them after the state dissolved and describes the historical evolution of Jewish identities. Surveys of more than 6,000 Jews in the early and late 1990s reveal that Russian and Ukrainian Jews have a deep sense of their Jewishness but are uncertain what it means. They see little connection between Judaism and being Jewish. Their attitudes toward Judaism, intermarriage and Jewish nationhood differ dramatically from those of Jews elsewhere. Many think Jews can believe in Christianity and do not condemn marrying non-Jews. This complicates their connections with other Jews, resettlement in Israel, the United States and Germany, and the rebuilding of public Jewish life in Russia and Ukraine. Post-Communist Jews, especially the young, are transforming religious-based practices into ethnic traditions and increasingly manifesting their Jewishness in public.
